앤디 워홀(Andy Warhol)의 작품에 나타난 반복 이미지 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 앤디 워홀의 작품에서 가장 큰 특징을 차지하는 반복 이미지의 사회적이고 미학적인 의미와 그 조형적인 가치에 대해 분석한 연구이다. 워홀의 작품에 나타난 반복 이미지가 어떠한 방식으로 현대 소비사회의 속성을 구현하고 있는지 분석하고 나아가 어떻게 독창적인 조형적 가치를 창출했는지 살펴보았다. 미술사에서 반복은 20세기 이후의 급격한 사회변화에 대응한 미술계의 다양한 조형적 시도 중 하나였다. 산업사회에 대한 미술계의 관심과 고찰은 기계적 속성을 작품에 도입하게 된 계기가 되었으며, 규격화와 반복은 화면을 구성하는 조형적인 요소가 되었다. 워홀의 반복 이미지 작업은 이러한 미술사의 흐름에서 자신들이 속한 사회와 주위 환경에 관심을 갖고 삶의 증인으로서의 예술의 역할을 강조하는 1960년대의 구상미술 경향과 관련이 깊다. 생산과 소비의 시스템이 만드는 반복적 일상에 함몰되어 모든 의미는 사라지고 기호화된 이미지만 남은 현대 소비사회에서 워홀은 산업사회의 기계적 속성을 작업방식에 도입함으로써 어떠한 직접적인 비평보다도 효과적으로 현대적 삶의 속성을 통찰하게 하였다. 워홀은 작품에 하나의 이미지를 반복적으로 나열함으로써 시대를 반영하는 거울처럼 다양한 층위로 사회를 표현했다. 기계적 대량생산체계를 연상시키는 반복적인 나열로 제시된 대량생산물 이미지는 모든 것이 소비를 중심으로 가치가 측정되는 현대사회의 의미생산 구조를 나타내었다. 또한 워홀은 죽음과 재난 시리즈를 비롯한 죽음을 모티브로 한 작품들을 통해 현대 소비사회에서의 삶과 죽음의 의미를 보여주었다. 그는 주로 매스미디어에서 다뤄지는 죽음 이미지를 작품에 담았는데, 작품에서 무수히 반복되는 죽음의 이미지는 실체적 의미가 없어진 채 시각에 강한 잔상만을 남기는 죽음을 형상화하여 모든 존재론적인 의미가 사라진 비인간적인 상황을 보여준다. 이를 통해 현대사회에서 인간이 가진 존엄성에 대해 돌아보게 하였다. 마지막으로 명화 이미지를 반복적으로 나열한 작품들은 수많은 복제가 이루어지는 사회 속에서 예술의 원본성 개념에 대해 문제를 제기하는 것이었다. 워홀이 반복 이미지를 통해 만들어낸 원본성을 숨긴 예술작품들은 기호의 사회에서 나올 수 있는 새로운 예술의 형태였다. 본 논문은 이와 같이 워홀이 현대 소비사회의 구조적 특성을 명확히 파악하고 이를 증언하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 워홀의 작품에 나타난 반 복 이미지는 지루한 반복과 규격화가 현실의 리얼리티처럼 되어버린 현대 소비사회를 표현한다. 사회의 속성을 반복이라는 조형적인 기법으로 승화시킨 워홀의 반복 이미지는 현대미술 중에서도 특히 현실과 예술이 접목하는 지점을 명확히 보여준다. 워홀의 작품에서 반복 이미지가 조형과 내용이 분리될 수 없는 영역에서 만나 이뤄 낸 예술적 성취는 변화된 시대의 새로운 예술이 생겨나는 지점일 것이다.;This study is an analysis on the social and aesthetic significance of the repetition of images, the most significant trait in Andy Warhol’s works, and its figurative value. The research also analyzed how the repetition of images in Warhol’s works realize the characteristics of modern consumer society and how it created a figurative value. Repetition, in art history, was one of the many figurative attempts of the art world to cope with the society that changed rapidly after the 20th century. The art world’s interest and contemplation on the industrial society provided the opportunity to adopt mechanical traits in art works and the standardization and repetition became a figurative factor comprising the canvas. Warhol’s repetition of images has a strong connection with the tendencies of 1960’s figurative art, which emphasizes the role of art as a witness of life having keen interest in the environment and society one belongs to. Warhol, by adopting the mechanical traits of the industrial society into his work, allows us to observe the characteristics of modern life far better than any direct critique in a modern consumer society, wherein all meanings are lost being buried under the pattern of daily life made by the system of production and consumption and wherein only symbolic images remain. Warhol displayed images repetitively in a single work and expressed the society in various layers like a mirror reflecting the era. The repeated display of an image of a mass produced product reminiscent of the mass production system showed the structure as to how meaning is created in a modern society, where all value is measured by consumption. Warhol also showed the meaning of life and death in modern consumer society through his works with death as a motive such as the death and disaster series. He made use of images of death from press pictures in making the death series. The repetition in this series erases the meaning of death and leaves behind a visual shock. This portrays an inhumane society deprived of real meaning. Through this work, he makes it possible to reflect on human dignity in the modern society. Lastly, his works involving the repetition of masterpieces raised the issue of art’s originality in a society where reproduction is rampant. The works of Warhol that hide the artwork’s originality through repetition of images were a new art form that could have only been made possible in a society of symbols. This study found that Warhol had a clear understanding of structural characteristics of modern consumer society, which he testified through his works. The repetition of images in Warhol’s works expresses the dull repetition and standardization that have become a reality in the modern consumer society. Warhol’s repetitive images that sublimate the traits of a society using a figurative technique of repetition, more clearly show the point where art and reality meet compared to other modern art. Warhol’s artistic accomplishment achieved through the combination of shape and content in his repetition of images must be the point in time when new art is developed in a changed society.
