미술관 소장 아카이브 기술요소 제안에 관한 연구

Abstract

미술관 소장 아카이브는 미술활동의 과정에서 생산된 개인 및 기관과 관련한 영구보존할 만한 가치가 있는 기록물이다. 미술관 소장 아카이브는 미적·감상적 가치를 지니는 미술 작품을 제외한 작가나 평론가 등의 작가노트, 메모, 드로잉, 전시인쇄물과 미술 관련 기관 및 단체의 주요 정책과 현안이 담긴 문서, 시청각자료를 포함한다. 이와 같이 다양한 매체와 형식을 포괄하는 미술관 소장 아카이브는 정보적, 증거적 가치를 지니는 기록물로 미술관 및 미술사 연구를 지원하고 정립한다. 미술관 소장 아카이브의 체계적 구축과 활용을 위해서는 이에 대한 기술요소를 정립할 필요가 있으며 이를 통해, 개별자료에 대한 정보뿐만 아니라 그 자료의 생산 맥락을 제공하면서 검색의 유용한 도구를 마련하여 이용자들이 쉽게 자료에 접근할 수 있다. 국내 미술관 소장 아카이브의 경우 건 단위를 기본으로 하는 단편적인 정보적 가치에 초점을 맞추는 경향이 있어 기록이 가진 속성 가운데 구조와 맥락의 요소가 유지되지 못한 채 관리되고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 미술관 소장 아카이브의 계층적 기술을 지원하여 생산맥락의 유지와 효과적인 활용을 도모할 수 있는 미술 아카이브의 기술요소를 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 뿐만 아니라 미술 아카이브는 개인의 기록이 많은 비중을 차지하고 매체와 형식이 다양하기 때문에 이를 반영할 수 있는 기술요소를 제안하고자 한다. 이를 위해 첫째, 문헌연구를 통해 미술 아카이브의 정의와 특성을 살펴보고 국제기록관리협의회(International Council on Archives, ICA)에서 제정한 국제표준 기록물 기술규칙(General International Standard Archival Description, ISAD(G)) 2판의 기술영역과 요소를 기준으로 영국의 보존기록 기술규칙(Manual of Archival Description, MAD) 3판, 미국의 보존기록 기술규칙(Describing Archives: A Component Standard, DACS) 2판, 캐나다 보존기록 기술규칙(Rules for Archival Description, RAD) 개정판, 한국의 국가기록원에서 제정한 영구기록물 기술규칙(Archival Description Rules, NAK/S 14:2011) 2판을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 미술 아카이브를 지속적으로 구축하여 활용하고 있는 국외 미술 관련 기관 4곳, 미국의 게티미술연구소(Getty Research Institutes), 모마 미술관(Museum of Modern Art), 영국의 테이트(TATE), 캐나다국립미술관(National Gallery of Canada, NGC)과 국내 미술 관련 기관 2곳, 국립현대미술관과 백남준아트센터의 기술요소에 관한 사례조사를 진행하였다. 셋째, 사례분석과 동시에 국내·외 6곳 미술관에서 미술 아카이브의 실무 업무를 담당하고 있는 담당자 4명과 면대면 심층 인터뷰 혹은 서면 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 이를 통해 미술관에서 보유하고 있는 공통적인 기술요소와 특화된 기술요소를 확인할 수 있었다. 이후 ISAD(G)의 7개 기술영역과 기술요소를 기준으로 하여 보존기록 기술표준 4개와 미술관 6곳의 기술요소를 비교 분석하였고 미술 아카이브에 적용할 수 있는 공통적인 기술요소를 도출하였다. 본 연구에서는 이상에서 분석된 내용을 바탕으로 미술관 소장 아카이브의 기술요소를 제안하였다. 제안된 기술요소는 ISAD(G)에서 제안하고 있는 식별영역, 배경영역, 내용과 구조 영역, 열람과 이용조건 영역, 연관자료 영역, 주기영역, 기술통제 영역의 7개 영역을 기준으로 하여 컬렉션, 시리즈, 파일 또는 아이템 계층에 맞는 각각의 기술요소를 설정하였다. 기술요소는 컬렉션 계층에서 27개, 시리즈 계층에서 29개, 아이템 계층에서 33개로 제안하였다. 또한 필수요소를 지정하였으며 이는 참조코드, 제목, 생산연도, 기술계층, 기술단위의 규모와 매체유형, 수량, 생산자명, 범위와 내용을 포함한다. 미술관 소장 아카이브의 기술요소에 대한 구체적인 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 식별영역은 미술관 소장 아카이브의 식별을 가능하게 하는 요소들을 기술하는 것으로 참조코드, 제목, 생산연도, 기술계층, 기술단위의 규모와 매체, 수장고명과 위치, 이미지, 유형, 수량을 제안하였다. 식별영역에서는 자료의 보관 위치 및 미술 아카이브의 다양한 형식을 세분화하여 기술할 수 있도록 하였다. 둘째, 배경영역은 미술관 소장 아카이브의 생산자에 관한 내용과 이력에 대해 기술하는 것으로 생산자명, 수집/인수 직전의 출처, 기록관리 이력, 행정연혁/개인이력으로 구성하였다. 셋째, 내용과 구조 영역은 미술관 소장 아카이브의 범위와 구조 및 내용에 대한 정보를 기술하는 것으로 범위와 내용, 기술, 추가이관, 정리체계, 색인어로 구성하였다. 이 가운데 효과적인 검색을 위한 색인어를 추가적으로 기술하여 미술 아카이브의 열람 및 서비스 등의 활용이 원활하게 이루어질 수 있도록 하였다. 넷째, 접근과 이용조건 영역은 미술관 소장 아카이브의 법적 상태나 접근과 이용에 관한 정보를 기술하는 것으로 접근조건, 재생산 조건, 언어와 자체, 물리적 특성과 기술적 요구사항, 매체 속성, 디지털, 검색도구로 구성하였다. 이 가운데 매체 속성을 통해 미술 아카이브의 다양한 유형과 형식이 기술될 수 있도록 하였고 디지털 기술요소를 통해 미술 아카이브 서비스, 출판, 전시 등의 활용적인 측면을 강조하였다. 다섯째, 관련자료 영역은 미술관 아카이브와 관련한 기록에 대한 정보를 기술하는 것으로 관련 기술 단위/관련 정보원, 원본과 사본의 존재와 위치, 디지털컬렉션으로 구성하였다. 여섯째, 주기영역은 다른 기술요소에서 설명할 수 없는 내용이나 추가적인 설명을 기술하는 것으로 출판주기, 전시주기, 대여주기, 보존주기, 주기로 구성하였다. 주기영역을 보존기록 기술표준 보다 구체화함으로서 미술 아카이브 구축과 활용 및 처리과정 이력을 관리할 수 있도록 하였다. 일곱째, 기술통제 영역은 미술관 소장 아카이브를 기술한 아키비스트에 대한 정보를 기술하는 것으로 아키비스트 주기, 규칙과 협약, 기술일자, 기술 수정근거와 사유로 구성하였다. 이 가운데 수정근거와 사유의 경우, 미술 아카이브의 기술 수정이력을 관리할 수 있도록 하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 미술관 소장 아카이브 기술요소는 기록관리를 지속적으로 수행해온 국가들의 표준뿐만 아니라 이를 실질적으로 적용하고 있는 국내·외 미술관들의 지침에 근거하였으므로 미술관 소장 아카이브 기술 표준을 선정할 때 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다. 향후 미술관 소장 아카이브를 체계적으로 구축하고 활용하기 위하여 기록학계, 미술사학계 등의 학제간의 지속적인 연구와 그에 따른 기술표준 제정 작업이 계속되어야 할 것이다.;Art Museum Archives are archives that are created by individuals and organizations that have a sufficient worth that necessitate permanent preservation. Art Museum Archives include the writing notes of artists and critics etc., memos, drawings, exhibition materials and documents containing the policies and the concurrent situations of art related organizations and institutions, and audio video materials, while excluding artworks that have aesthetic or emotional value. Art Museum Archives, which include various medium and types as above, are archives that have information and evidence based value, and are established and supported for the research of the Art Museum and Art History. For the systematic implementation and application of an Art Museum Archive, there is a need to establish related description elements, and through this not only must information on the individual archives be provided, but through a high utility finding aid, the creation context of the archived document should be provided so that users of the archive can easily access documents. In the case of Korean Art Museum Archives, there is a tendency to focus on the fragmented informational value of an individual archive document, which in reality causes the structural and contextual element characteristic of the document to be destroyed. Therefore this research supports the Hierarchical Description of Art Museum Archives and has the objective of proposing Art Archive Description Elements that promote the preservation of creation context and effective utilization. In addition, because personal records take up a large portion of Art Archives and are very diverse in terms of medium and type, a Description Element that can reflect this is attempted to be proposed. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, first, through literature research, the definition and characteristics of Art Archives were examined, and based on the descriptive guidelines of the 2nd Edition of the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)) established by the International Council on Archives (ICA), the 3rd Edition of the Manual of Archival Description (MAD), which is the description manual for archives of the United Kingdom, the 2nd Edition of the Describing Archives: A Component Standard (DACS), which is the description manual for archives of the United States, the Revised Edition of the Rules for Archival Description (RAD), which is the description manual for archives of Canada, and the 2nd Edition of the Archival Description Rules, NAK/S 14:2011, which is the description manual for archives of Korea established by the Korean National Archives, were all examined. Second, a case study on the description elements of 4 UK and USA based organizations outside of Korea that had implemented and utilized an Art Archive, and 2 organizations in Korea related to art, was conducted. Third, at the same time as the case studies, an intimate face to face or document interview was conducted with the managers of Art Archives in 6 Art Museums both within Korea and within UK and USA based organizations. Through this it was possible to confirm the common and specialized description elements that each Art Museum implemented. Later, based on the 7 description areas and description elements of ISAD(G), 4 archives description standards and the description elements of 6 Art Museums were comparatively analyzed and the common description elements that could be applied to Art Archives were deduced. Based on the analysis above, this research proposes description elements of Art Museum Archives. The proposed description elements, based on the 7 common description areas proposed by the ISAD(G), which are the Identity Area, Context Area, Content and Structure Area, Conditions of Access and Use Area, Allied Materials Areas, Note Area and Description Control Area, were assigned as description elements appropriate for each of the collections, series, files and item hierarchies. There were 27 collection hierarchies, 29 series hierarchies, and 22 item hierarchies proposed for the description elements. Essential elements were also designated, which include reference codes, titles, creation year, level of description, extent and medium of the unit of description(quantity, bulk, or size), quantity, name of creator, scope and content. First, for the Identity Area, which describes elements that make possible the distinction of Art Museum Archives, the inclusion of reference code, title, creation year, level of description, extent and medium of the unit of description(quantity, bulk, or size), name and location of repository, abstract, image, type, and quantity were proposed. The Identity Area was devised to make possible the subdivision of the name and location of the repository and the various types of Art Archives. Second, the Context Area, which describes the information and biographical history of the creator of the Art Museum Archive, includes the name of the creator, the immediate source of acquisition or transfer, archival history, and the administrative/biographical history. Third, the Content and Structure Area, which describes information regarding the range, structure and content of the Art Museum Archive, includes the scope and content, system of arrangement, and keywords. With the additional description of keywords, which allows more effective search, the smooth utilization of the querying and other additional services of Art Archives is made possible. Fourth, the Conditions of Access and Use Area, which describes information regarding the legal state or information regarding access and use of the Art Museum Archive, includes conditions governing access, conditions governing reproduction, language/scripts of material, physical characteristics and technical requirements), the characteristics of the medium, digital and finding aids. Through the characteristics of the medium, the description of various types and forms of Art Archives is made possible and through digital description elements, the application perspective of the services, publishing and exhibition etc. of Art Archives are emphasized. Fifth, the Allied Materials Area, which describes information regarding the allied materials of the Art Museum Archive, includes related units of description, existence and location of originals, and digital collections. Sixth, the Note Area, which describes information that is not possible to be described by other description elements or describes additional explanation descriptions, includes publication notes, accruals notes, notes, exhibition notes, loan notes, and preservation notes. By outlining the Note Area to be more specific than the archives description standard, management of the implementation and application and the history of the treatment process of the Art Archive management is made possible. Seventh, the Description Control Area, which describes information regarding the Archivist's Notes of the Art Museum Archive, includes Archivist's Notes, rules or conventions, description date, and reasons and circumstances for description revision. For the reasons and circumstances for description revision, the management of the history of revision of the Art Archive description is made possible. The Art Museum Archive Description Elements proposed in this research are based on not only the standards of countries that have continuously implemented description management, but because they are based on both he guidelines of Art Museums within Korea also overseas Art Museum that are currently implementing these standards and guidelines, the elements proposed in this research can be used as base and foundation reference when choosing and establishing Art Museum Archive Description Standards. In order to systematically implement and apply Art Museum Archives in the future, there must be continuous interdisciplinary research and accordingly appropriate description standard establishment efforts made between the studies of archives & records management and the studies of art history.
