Abstract
;As film score have been vastly expanding, there has been a growing need for diverse music backgrounds amidst the accumulation of experimenting with Western music, traditional music, and modern music. The present film score industry has been pioneering its own genre and has been making new attempts by making global recruitments. Mychael Danna(1958~) is a film score composer that puts together traditional instruments and orchestras, creating a unique cultural characteristic suitable for this era of globalization. Mychael Danna has recently been very active in Hollywood, working alongside directors in order to musically express the film director’s intentions and fully understand the internal narrative of the specific movie. This paper looks at how and what Mychael Danna derived from Ang Lee’s in order to fully express the musical aspects of the film. is a fantasy movie set in the middle of the Pacific ocean about a boy’s survival on a small boat with a tiger. It contains various themes such as the boy’s spirituality, faith, etc. This study will focus on how the narrative of the story and film score revolve around the symbiotic relationship between the Indian boy and the tiger in the middle of the Pacific ocean and how the music has been composed distinct from other films. The study examines the life-story and filmography of Ang Lee, the director who cinematized the original novel of the same name tells a story of which he selected theme music in order to draw a musical story that demonstrates the internal growth of the boy, his learning experience, and the emotions the boy feels every time he faces a new situation. There was an intimate relationship between the director’s intentions and the intrinsic story of India’s beliefs, spirituality, and religion seen through the lens of the boy’s life, and this narrative was well-developed through the film score. The music added color to the film by using traditional Indian instruments to create the spatial background of the film, human color of India was portrayed with orchestral instruments, and traditional instruments were combined to represent each situation, and blurred out cultural distinctions. Through this study, not only did Mychael Dana's music reflect the spatial background of the film, but the music also supported India’s deeply rooted religious ideas and beliefs and reproduced a type of novelty by blurring our cultural distinctions with the combination of unique Indian instruments with the classical orchestra. Through this study, I hope that film scores follow the footsteps of present-day movies that is filled with diverse and complex content and bring together traditional music that is not commonly used, in order to create unconventional and different genres and attempt at different types of music.
