Abstract
A. Plan The idea of flying across the world, meeting new people, and getting paid is fascinating for those aspiring to a career as cabin crew. There are a growing number of colleges and institutions which provide cabin crew English classes specifically designed for students who want to pursue this popular career path. Based on my experience as a cabin crew and as a cabin crew interviewer, students still have significant difficulties communicating in English and they need more systematic curriculum to prepare for job interviews or to work in the aviation industry. Airline interviews usually test candidates’ speaking and listening skills and consist of one-on-one interviews, discussions, or role-play specifically focused on in-flight scenarios. This Textbook seeks to be a useful and practical tool to help candidates to become familiar with how to communicate in these in-flight scenarios. Building communicative competence is at the center of this Book, since after becoming a cabin crew member, they will be required to possess good English skills to pass training courses, as well as to communicate with passengers and colleagues. This Textbook, is therefore, intended for an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course and can be held at private cabin crew English institutions or universities. It should be led by a qualified English teacher who has experience in the aviation industry. The target learners are Korean EFL young adults between the ages in 20s to 30s, of both genders, whose level is intermediate-mid to high, according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (2012). Students lack in speaking confidence due to the limited opportunities they have to produce English, and are not familiar with technical vocabulary which is used during in-flight services. To pass examinations and to fulfill cabin crew responsibilities, the target learners not only need to practice receptive skills, but also practice communicative skills English specifically relating to cabin crew responsibilities.
