Abstract

본 논문은 본인의 석사과정 수료를 위한 졸업연주회의 프로그램인 H. Purcell의 극음악 중 『Come all ye songsters』, 『Music for a while』, 『I attempt from Love’s sickness to fly』, 『Sweeter than roses』와 I. Clarke의 『Hypnosis for Flute and Piano』, A. Berg의 『Sieben Frühe Lieder(일곱 개의 초기 가곡)』 그리고 C. Debussy의 『Sonata for Cello and Piano in d minor』에 대한 작품 해설이다. 본 논문에서는 각각의 작곡가들의 음악적 특징과 작품의 시대적 배경 등을 토대로 작품을 이해하고 곡의 해석과 더불어 반주부의 역할을 연구하여 연주에 도움이 되고자 한다. 17세기 영국의 대표적인 작곡가 헨리 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659추정-1695)은 그의 짧은 생애 동안 다양한 장르에서 400곡이 넘는 작품들을 남겼으며 대표 작품으로는 오페라와 많은 극음악, 그리고 가곡을 들 수 있다. 이 작품들은 이전의 영국 작곡가들에게서는 볼 수 없던 퍼셀만의 독특한 형태로 작곡되어 그 예술성이 높이 평가되고 있다. 본 논문에서 다룰 그의 작품『Come all ye songsters』, 『Music for a while』, 『I attempt from love’s sickness to fly』, 『Sweeter than roses』이 네 곡은 각각의 다른 연극에 사용된 음악이지만 공통적으로 단어의 반복적인 사용이나 음악을 초상화처럼 묘사하는 등 여러 기법을 통해 가사를 효과적으로 표현하였고 이렇듯 자유분방한 그의 음악적 특징으로 인해 영국음악에 새로운 음악양식을 형성하는데 기여했다. 현재도 왕성한 활동을 하고 있는 플루트 연주자 겸 작곡가인 이안 클라크(Ian Clarke, 1964- )는 역시 영국의 작곡가다. 그의 음악은 클래식에서부터 대중음악까지 음악적 경계가 없어 고정되거나 한정되지 않은 역동적이고 다양한 주제의 작품들이 많다. 『Hypnosis』는 데이비드 힉스(David Hicks), 사이먼 페인터(Simon Painter)와 공동 작곡한 곡으로 1904년 이안 클라크에 의해 플루트와 피아노를 위한 곡으로 새롭게 편곡되었다. 오스트리아의 작곡가 알반 베르크(Alban Berg, 1885-1935)는 20세기 초 쇤베르크(Arnold Schönberg, 1874-1951)를 중심으로 전통적 조성세계를 붕괴시키고 새로운 불협화음을 사용함으로써 무조성, 12음기법 등의 새 음악어법을 창조한 <Die Zweite Wiener Schule(제 2 빈 악파)>의 일원이다. 그는 쇤베르크가 후기 낭만주의의 바그너(Wilhelm Richard Wagner, 1813-1883)의 양식을 계승하여 무조음악의 새로운 양식으로 12음 기법을 도입한 것을 받아들이고 이러한 양식에 자신만의 새로운 기법을 통하여 낭만주의적 서정성을 결부시켰다. 본 논문에서 다룰 그의 『Sieben Frühe Lieder(7개의 초기 가곡)』은 1905년부터 3년에 걸쳐 작곡된 곡들을 모은 모음곡으로 그의 초기 음악의 특징과 그 후의 음악적 변천을 잘 나타낸다. 작품 전체에서 독일 낭만주의와 초창기 쇤베르크의 영향이 보이지만 그와 동시에 그 이후의 그의 원숙한 서정적인 음악 표현이 이미 작품의 곳곳에 존재하고 있다. 가장 프랑스적인 작곡가로 불리는 드뷔시(Claude Debussy, 1862-1918)는 고전시대와 낭만시대를 거쳐 이어져 온 독일적인 무게감이 느껴지는 작품들과는 다른 독자적인 프랑스 음악을 만들고자 했다. 그는 조성에 얽매이지 않았고 복잡했던 다성 음악의 화성기능을 현대적으로 승화시켰다. 이러한 음악적 특징은 드뷔시를 인상주의 음악을 확립한 주도적인 인물로 각인시켰고 더 나아가 새로운 음악의 시대를 열었다고 평가받게 한다. 『Sonata for Cello and Piano in d minor』는 제 1차 세계대전이 발발하고 난 후 쓰여진 그의 후기 작품 중 하나로 드뷔시가 작곡하고자 했던 『Six Sonates pour divers Instrument(여러 악기 편성에 의한 6곡의 소나타)』중 첫 번째 곡이다. 이 곡은 드뷔시가 남긴 단 한곡의 첼로 소나타로 연주시간은 10-13분 사이의 그리 길지 않은 곡이지만 그 속에 템포와 다이내믹의 다양한 변화가 나타나고 동시에 첼로와 피아노에서의 복잡한 리듬과 화음의 사용으로 드뷔시만의 개성이 있는 독특한 소나타로 남겨졌다.;This thesis is about the author’s graduation recital program for Master’s degree; 『Come all ye songsters』, 『Music for a while』, 『I attempt from Love’s sickness to fly』, 『Sweeter than roses』by H. Purcell, 『Hypnosis for Flute and Piano』by I. Clarke, 『Sieben Frühe Lieder』by A. Berg, and 『Sonata for Cello and Piano in d minor』by C. Debussy. This program annotation aims to understand the pieces better based on the composers’musical background and features. Also, in order to have a better performance, this is to analyze the characteristics of each piece as well as to study the role of the accompaniment. Henry Purcell(1659 estimated-1695), a representative British composer in 17th century, left more than 400 pieces in various genres which include Opera, Dramatic Music, and a lot of songs during his short lifetime. 『Come all ye songsters』, 『Music for a while』, 『I attempt from Love’s sickness to fly』, and 『Sweeter than roses』to be handled in this paper are dramatic music. Though these music were used in different dramas, common characters in these music are the use of word-painting method and the repetitive use of words in order to express the lyrics effectively. His freewheeling musical features lead to opening the new style in English music. Ian Clarke(1964- ), is a British composer as well as a flutist. He currently is in full play in various genres which is not only classical music but popular music and TV music. Since he has an outstanding ability to engraft the classic music into the popular music without the boundary between them, his music is dynamic and unlimited. Alban Berg(1885-1935), an Austrian composer, is a member of <Die Zweite Wiener Schule(the 2nd Viennese School)> that opened the new musical style such as expressionism, atonality and 12-tone technique. He accepted 12-tone technique of Schönberg who was a his teacher, and linked the romantic lyricism based on these new style. 『Sieben Frühe Lieder』by him is a suite consisting of music which had been composed throughout 3 years since 1905. It represents well the characteristic of his early music and the subsequent musical transition. Although the German romanticism and the influence by Schönberg are seen in the whole work, his own mellowed musical expression exists across the pieces. Claude Debussy(1862-1918), who is a French composer, leaded to a new musical movement; the Impressionism. He was not bound by the tonality and avoided the use of functional harmony. These try made Debussy play a leading role to open the new musical era. 『Sonata for Cello and Piano in d minor』 is Debussy’s only Cello sonata and one of his late-works which were composed after the 1st World War broke out. The performance time is not too long but various changes of the tempo and dynamics appear in it. The use of whole-tone scale, chromaticism and complex rhythm and harmony in the cello and piano show Debussy’s own musical style.
