Abstract
The purpose of this study is to intensively explore the practice of education through the case of inquiry-based education in mathematics. Inquiry-based mathematics education is not only meaningful in its own way. And the environment of the field where the education takes place and the learning culture. It is necessary to conduct a case study on the educational form of the total form deviating from the temporary type study or the methodological level local study. As a result, we have set up the following two research problems as a single case in the mathematical specialization alternative school (here after referred to as ‘A school’) which conducts the inquiry-based mathematics education in everyday class. 1. How does mathematics class in A school, which conducts inquiry-based education as a whole? 2. What are the educational characteristics of the A school's inquiry-based mathematics education? For the study, the mathematics director of the A school (teacher C) was selected as the research participants and the students recommended by the teacher C were selected as the students to be interviewed. In this study, various sources of case studies such as class observation, interview, school history information, student history information were utilized. Class observation was observed 3 times for 2 hours and 30 minutes, and the interview was conducted once for the teacher and twice for the students. All of the collected data were transferred and read repeatedly, and they were organized into a meaningful set of categories and main words were selected. A feature of this school look ahead to solve research problems in order to understand the inquiry-based educational background and context of mathematics education has had include the following: In terms of operation and curriculum, it is a block-time system, a graduate-level curriculum, and a convergent curriculum. All of the teachers have experience in research(inquiry), and they have a positive image of the school's founding philosophy and the implementation of inquiry-based education. Most of the students were enrolled with voluntary will. Parents believed in the school 's education and enrolled their children although there was a disadvantage that the unaccredited alternative school did not receive the accreditation. The results of the study are as follows. A school's mathematics classes are divided into (1) Mathematics Inquiry, (2) Mathematical Integration Essay, (3) Math Epoche and (4) Mathematical Project. The four types of mathematics classes are different from each other in terms of goals and method of operation, but it is recommended that the student decide what he or she will study or learn and learn in a way that constitutes content knowledge on their own. In addition, all four classes can be used to sustain student inquiry activities. Mathematical Integration Essay is a training for mathematical thinking and logic needed for mathematics inquiry. Math Epoche and Mathematical Projects serve as a mathematical topic exploration to support Mathematical Inquiry in regular semesters. Students are exposed to researchers' work through mathematics inquiry lessons, and conduct continuous inquiry activities. A school 's inquiry-based mathematics education showed 5 educational characteristics. First, students experience learner-centered education through self-planned inquiry activities based on their interests and career paths, and practice sustainable forms of learning through intrinsic motivation. Second, this school induces learning flow based on the characteristics of inquiry-based education which is advantageous for formation of learning motive and conditions such as the operation of block time system, and enables students' inquiry activities to be sustainable through a virtuous cycle of immersion and inquiry-based education. Third, through mathematical inquiry activities, students are encouraged to develop and improve various competencies such as creative thinking skills, communication skills, career development and self-management skills, and foreign language skills. Fourth, the teacher guides to the sustainable inquiry through the role of guiding the mathematical inquiry, the role of developing the self-learning power, establishing the inquiry ethics, and plays a role as a fellow researcher in students' inquiry. Fifth, assessments are made to support sustainable growth and inquiry activities, not comparative assessments. It excludes evaluation forms that are relative or scored, and encourages students' inquiry activities and learning based on qualitative evaluation through interviews and observations and student self-evaluation. The following conclusions can be drawn from the above-mentioned research results in the case study of inquiry-based mathematics education. First, students, teachers, parents, and schools should establish a trust-based educational community for the successful implementation of inquiry-based mathematics education. The education of 'A school' is a new attempt beyond the system of public education. The consensus and trust of the members became an important factor in maintaining the educational culture of inquiry-based mathematics education. Second, inquiry-based mathematics education is a subject-oriented mathematics education and it needs to be studied as a way to strengthen the internal field of mathematics. In A school, it is possible to recognize when and how mathematics can be used through subject-centered learning, and to recognize the necessity of mathematics and to expect the internal motivation of learning. These results suggest that there is a need to study inquiry-based mathematics education as an internal motivation for mathematics learning. Third, inquiry-based mathematics education should aim for learner-centered education. Inquiry activities can achieve good results when researchers themselves have clear goals and objectives through research. The students in 'A School' knew that they had a sense of ownership in their own inquiry and that they were also responsible for their own inquiry. Students can be recognized as individual researchers and the educational effect of inquiry-based mathematics education can be enhanced when the subjects of inquiry become students themselves. Fourth, there is a need for a systematic system that can support teachers who implement inquiry-based mathematics education. In inquiry-based mathematics education, the expected role of teachers differs from the role of teachers in traditional classroom instruction. In the process of assisting students in their research, the teacher should be a researcher as well as a student, and should be aware of the needs of the students through delicate observation techniques. Observation and interview evaluation also cause many trial and error because teachers become self-evaluation tools. It is therefore necessary to implement a systematic teacher education plan that can reduce trial and error through collaborative inquiry with students in the school community and at the school level, and enhance the professionalism of the class. In this study, we investigated how the inquiry-based mathematics education is implemented and what educational characteristics can be expected through the case of A school. This result is difficult to apply directly to the general schools in Korea due to the uniqueness of A school which is an unauthorized alternative school. However, since inquiry-based mathematics education should be interpreted in various educational contexts, it was necessary to study schools, teachers, students, and classes altogether. This study is expected to provide insights into the direction of change in order to enable inquiry-based mathematics education to be practiced in Korea.
