Abstract
This study explores the role of CSR activities, corporation size and nationality on consumer emotion during a crisis caused by the firm’s unethical behaviors. Based on Stereotype Content Model, which assumes that stereotypes are made up of two dimensions – warmth and competence-, the study manipulated firms as warm and cold based on their CSR contributions; competent and relatively weak based on corporation size (big firms vs. small-and-medium sized firms). The study also examined whether in-group bias plays a role on consumer perception based on nationality during a crisis. For analysis, the study created 2 (firm with high CSR record vs. low CSR record) × 2 (big vs. small-and-medium sized firm) x 2 (Korean vs. foreign) factorial design and tested consumer’s response through a survey. Each group of 529 respondents divided into 8 groups were provided with a script about a pharmaceutical company with different CSR record, nationality and annual revenue indicted by the Korean prosecutor for providing rebates to doctors. The respondents were asked to evaluate four different emotions – “regrettable,” “unfair,” “schadenfreude” and “unworthy” - based on four distinct emotions (respect, pity, envy and contempt) elicited by different clusters hypothesized in Stereotype Content Model. The hypothesis of the study were as follows: firms with positive CSR reputation will suffer less damage, as favorable prior reputation will serve as buffer during a crisis; small-and-medium sized firms will suffer less damage during a crisis as bigger firms will face tougher response due to ‘tall poppy syndrome’; foreign firms will suffer more damage than Korean firms due to in-group favoritism. Two-way analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypothesis, and the result showed that three-way interaction effects were statistically significant for “regrettable,” “unfair” and “schadenfreude.” Consumer emotion for a small-and-medium sized foreign company with high CSR record was more unfavorable than a Korean company with the same condition, but response for small-and-medium sized foreign company with low CSR record was more favorable than a Korean company. In contrast, emotional response for a large foreign company with high CSR record was more favorable than a Korean company while a large foreign company with low CSR record suffered more damage than a Korean company in all responses except “regrettable.” While previous studies on crisis communications focused on the impact of prior CSR reputation on consumer emotion during a crisis, this paper focused on interaction effects of CSR reputation with corporation size and nationality. Accordingly, companies can use this research as a background resource to identify their brands’ social context and effectively develop communications strategies that correspond stakeholders’ emotion during a crisis.
