조선시대 왕비 진영眞影 연구

Abstract

‘밝은 거울은 형체를 살필 수 있는 방도이며, 지난 과거는 현재를 알 수 있는 방도이다.’ 라는 말과 같이 과거를 돌이켜 보는 일은 우리에게 지혜를 주고 현재의 올바른 삶의 방향의 지표가 된다. 본인은 고문(古文)을 읽으며 고난과 역경을 딛고 세상 속에 빛을 발하는 역사 속 인물들과 조우(遭遇)하며 관심의 대상이 어떠한 생김새인가에 대한 궁금증도 자연스럽게 생겼다. 본인이 관심을 갖게 된 인물은 조선시대 왕비이다. 조선시대의 왕비는 교육과 수련을 통해 예(禮)를 온몸으로 체화시키고 나라의 어머니인 국모(國母)로 승화(昇華)되는 인물이다. 역사 속 왕비들을 만나며 용모(容貌)가 어떠했는지 찾아보았지만, 왕비의 초상화는 기록에만 있을 뿐 전란(戰亂)으로 소실되어 전해져 오는 것이 없다. 이러한 점에 안타까움을 느껴 그들을 초상화로 표현해보고 싶은 소명의식이 생겼다. 본인은 조선의 왕비를 초상화로 표현하기 위하여 조선시대 초상화에 담긴 전신사조(傳神寫照) 정신을 이해하고, 초상화를 그리는 방법 중 하나인 추화(追畵)를 살펴보며 왕비 진영(眞影) 작업의 토대를 마련하고자 했다. 또한 왕비의 관련된 기록과 공적인 역할을 서술하여 조선시대 국모로서의 위상을 되새겨 보고, 여인상(女人像)을 보며 사심(寫心)이 어떻게 형상화(形象化) 되었는지 고찰해보았다. 이러한 이론을 바탕으로 조선시대 신덕왕후(神德王后), 소헌왕후(昭憲王后), 정순왕후(定順王后) 그리고 명성왕후(明聖王后) 4명의 왕비를 바람직한 성정이 드러난 형상(形象)으로 표현하고자 하였다. 그리고 제작 과정을 ‘기록에 의한 상상’으로 명명하여 역사서(조선왕조실록, 왕비史, 왕비열전)와 왕실 족보인 선원보감(璿源寶鑑)을 통하여 그들의 전반적인 생애와 성정을 파악한 후 추화하여 보았다. 이 연구를 통해 조선시대 왕비 진영 작업의 가치를 되새겨보고, 본인의 작품을 분석하며 앞으로의 작업에 있어 튼튼한 기초의 발판을 삼고자 한다.;‘A bright mirror is the means of reflecting the form, and the past is the means of knowing the present.’ As expressed in this sentence, thinking of the past helps us to gain wisdom and directs us to the path of a good life for the present. Reading ancient literature allows an encounter with historical figures who went through hardship and suffering but were nonetheless able to shine a light into the world; and this often leads to a curiosity about how they may have looked. The author was particularly interested in the queens of the Joseon period, who were the embodiment of courtesy through their education and training, and were figures raised to the status of ‘Guk-mo’ (國母), i.e., mother of the nation. However, though various historical sources which mention the queens were researched to discover their appearances, there were no remaining copies of their portraits, and only records of these, as the portraits disappeared through times of war. This regrettable fact led the author to have a sense of calling to envision how these portraits may have looked and to present these queens through portraiture in the style of the Joseon period. In order to do this, one has to understand the mentality known as ‘Jun-shin-sa-jo’ (傳神寫照), which was present in Joseon dynasty portraits, and also study the method of drawing portraits known as ‘Chu-hwa’ (追畵); and this was done to establish the foundation for the work of presenting the faces of these queens. Having these studies as the basis, the author also thought through the queens’ status as ‘Guk-mo’ of the Joseon period by narrating the records and official roles related with them in order to recreate visual depictions which contain the desirable attitude of remembrance and reverence for the queens of the Joseon period. Moreover, by looking at images of women, the author analysed how ‘sa-shim’ (寫心), i.e., description of one’s inner being, becomes visually depicted. This report explains in detail the process of production for the portraits of four Joseon queens, namely, ‘Queen Shin-deok’(神德王后), ‘Queen So-heon’(昭憲王后), ‘Queen Jung-soon’(定順王后) and ‘Queen Myeong-seong’(明聖王后). Such a process is called ‘imagination based on records’, and the author imagined the visual depictions of the queens after comprehending their whole life and character based on historical writings (e.g., the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, Record of the Queens, Biography of the Queens) and the genealogy of the royal family, called ‘Sun-won-bo-gam’(璿源寶鑑). Through this research, the author has been able to think through the direction of improvement for the production of portraits of the queens of the Joseon period and, by analysing her own artworks, also build a strong basis for future works.
