일시적 집합 '맥맨쳐'로 사유되는 이미지 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 연구자 본인의 동시대적 경험에 관한 일종의 시각적 다큐멘터리로서, 사적인 기억을 비롯하여 도시 곳곳에 얽히고 축적된 문화적 지형으로까지 확장되는 시선의 궤적을 담고 있다. 도시는 연구자의 유년 시절부터 성장의 배경이 되었던 공간이다. 방대한 정치적·문화적 함의를 내포하고 있는 도시는 일상의 의식을 고착시키는 기호들로 가득하면서도, 예상하지 못한 상황으로 현대인의 일상에 낯선 반향을 일으키는 곳이기도 하다. 이에 연구자는 우선 도시에서 이루어지는 구체적인 삶과 그에 동반한 내적 의식의 흐름이 생성하는 사건이나 상황을 주목하였다. 그리고 그것을 통해 동시대 도시에서의 사회적 관계망과 일상성을 재인식하고자 하였다. 이러한 의도에서 출발한 연구자의 작품들은 다양한 실제 경험을 배경으로 한다. 하지만 도시 공간의 기계적 리듬의 권위에 갇히지 않으면서 연구자 본인이 속한 공동체의 문화적 특성을 비판적으로 진단하고 시각화한다. 연구자는 위의 문제의식을 구체화하는 과정에서 “맥맨쳐(McManture)”라는 개념어를 창안하였다. 이것은 맥맨션(McMansion)과 문화(Culture)의 합성어로서, 사회문화적 특수성에 의해 구성된 도시 군상의 일시적 집합을 가리킨다. 연구자는 맥맨쳐 용어를 통해 도시 일상의 집합적 특질과 다양성을 분석적으로 다루면서, 동시에 도시인 예술가의 미적 배경이 되는 도시에 내포된 맥맨쳐의 문화적 구성요소들을 주요한 도시예술 작품들 사례와 함께 고찰하였다. 본 논문에서는 맥맨쳐 개념이 연구자의 작품들에서 구현되어 있는 모습을 크게 세 가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 첫 번째, ‘관계에 대한 관찰’ 범주에서는 연구자를 둘러싼 일상에 침식되어 있는 문화적 기표들에 대해 질문해 보았다. 이는 미디어의 발달과 그로 인한 간접적인 체험 영역의 확대 현상이 이미지들에 대한 지식을 획일화시키고 고착화한다는 사실에 기인하여, 그러한 이미지 요소를 조형적 언어를 통해 재인식하기 위함이다. 두 번째, ‘일상의 비일상화, 비일상의 일상화’ 범주에서는 평범한 일상 속에서 일어나는 개인적인 혹은 사회적인 사건들을 비일상적 현실로서 대하거나, 혹은 비일상적인 사건들을 평범한 일상의 풍경으로 포섭하는 연구자의 시각적 전략을 다루었다. 일종의 ‘거리두기’방식을 따르는 그러한 태도는 연구자가 도시문화의 변화와 집합적 현상을 객관화하여 적극 읽어내는 데 유효하다. 세 번째, ‘조합과 배치’ 범주에서는 연구자가 도시에서 행했던 여러 사유들을 구상적인 이미지들을 통해 기록한 방식과 의도를 분석해 보았다. 이러한 사유의 이미지들에는 매스 미디어의 산물을 비롯하여 연구자의 경험적 잔상들도 포함되는 데, 이들 요소들이 시각적 자극이 포화상태를 이루는 동시대 도시에서의 경험을 예술로 전환하고 재구성하는 방법론에 대해 논하고자 하였다. 이렇게 본 논문은 일상의 이미지들을 차용해 이를 여과하거나 배합하여 반복, 배열하는 방식으로 표현된 연구자의 작품들이 객관적 현재에 근거한 사유를 통해 일상의 위력적인 전형성을 비평적으로 포착하고 있음을 논증하고자 하였다. 아울러, 연구자의 작품에서 보이는 관계성 구축의 시도 또한 동시대 도시인으로서의 삶의 자의식을 회복하고 개인과 사회 사이의 바람직한 균형 관계를 모색하려는 소박한 노력이라는 점을 강조하고자 하였다.;Cities are spaces that form the foundation of human consciousness, they contain traces of human sensibilities and manage our everyday lives. Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) stated that it must be acknowledged that people do not inhabit cities, cities inhabit people. Cities inhabit us through affecting our living experiences, in ways that can be easily read and evidenced. For example, every individual’s innate background rhythm, is reliant on the mechanical rhythm of the city. The backdrop and foundation of my childhood and life experiences, is the major city of Seoul; a place that involves many intersecting issues of politics and culture. This is a place that is jam packed with associations, references, and representations, that you cannot fully imagine the ways in which this place can influence and effect one’s life. Attempts to connect the ways in which the city affects my personal experience, led to the development of a system to network my everyday life, which led to a new understanding of my city of residence. The creation of this network, began the process of mapping the Geographie of various everyday experiences of my city, in my work. This work is a documentation that refers to personal cultural experiences, but goes beyond just personal perspective by incorporating the many collected elements that make up a cultural topography of the city and the body of work. The term McManture is an amalgamation of the words McMansion and Culture. This term is meant to encompass the distinct cultural and social characteristics of the diverse masses that in the city, and what essentially this large group of people is made up of. This work seeks to deduce a way of seeing through the various everyday life experiences of this place. Thus, art plays a role in researching and examining one’s own internal rhythm in relation to their place in society, and through looking at the influences of the city, specifically focusing on the everyday, and art. The work is divided into three themes, “Observations of Relationships,” “The Unusual in the Everyday,” and “Combination and Sequence.” The first theme addresses questions of common representations and symbols in everyday life. By boiling down mass media influences and direct experiences, one can interpret the visual language and symbols of everyday life. This, becomes an objective formative visual language the artwork adheres to, in order to sort through various viewpoint to develop a new understanding in all the elements that are involved. The second theme, focuses on the elements of everyday experience that stick out, and how things that are supposedly normal become abnormal. When looked at from a distance, the ‘abnormal’ everyday happenings change from every habits, our societal relationship to these anomalies can transform them into something different or new. The final theme, “Combination and Sequence” takes the city’s elements and logs them into detailed concrete imagery. These are not merely visual stimuli of an oversaturated city, they are encouraging ways of seeing for an ‘Art through Experience’ which can become a permanent reality within one’s inner sensibilities, and stirs the independent character to set their goal. Due to media’s creation of shared communal impressions, many of these visual experiences are implied in the progressive images. These simple overlapping media images start an individual visual experience that leaves behind a distinct lingering visual. In this manner, the framework of the everyday doesn’t lose sight of the state of the existing idea, and instead it attempts to invert, or enhance the concept. My work borrows everyday imagery, and then manipulates, combines, repeats, or put them in sequences. This, and other methods of expression in my work highlights the habits, environment, and patterns that can easily be ignored in our daily lives. This work seeks to regain sense of identity within our lives by inverting or changing the method or motive. In this manner, the work investigates and upholds the shared -perspectives that exists within the balance of society and within individuals.
