‘동시대인’의 예술

Abstract

This study shows the process of how stream of era and its characteristics, realized through actual life in modern city and through neutral analysis, spread out in artwork by various expression methods. Our lives logically exist in the era we live in. The characteristic of an era is a consistent flow and it affects the life and consciousness of every individual. Especially, the era of neo-liberalism, the one that we are currently living in, may look positive but the freedom given by it comes back to us in the shape of uncertainty. Thus, individuals feel their existence becoming unclear in the society and are anxious about their future. Also consumption made by the desire of capitalism makes their existence more confident. Therefore, in order to achieve goods and materials which has become the purpose itself, people enter the battle field of hard competition and still constantly consume to create their existence. In such era, we lost our autonomous standpoint and judgement and just accommodate ourselves to the logic of capitalism. The research is aware of this issue and has considered how to live and work. However, one unchangeable fact is that one cannot escape from the era that he or she lives in. For this reason, I tried not to distort the era and tried to analysis it with neutral point of view. As an accurate diagnosis is the only way to find the best treatment, "Accepting as it is" shouldn't be considered as lethargy or irresponsibility but as an attitude to exactly see and understand the era. Particularly, a metropolis is a very important space for researchers. The stream of the era is more condensed and remarkable that any other places which make it a perfect place to figure out contemporary characteristics. I develop artwork starting from daily life in the city and finding subjects and materials from it. Each work has its own story and each work's method vary from performance film, collage, photograph, installation, painting to three-dimensional structure. Terms which explain these work ㅡ such as sporadic, partial, fragmentary, accidental, arbitrary ㅡ are all from the uncertain contemporary. This study begins with examining the dark side of the current era and also deals with the cause of 'anxiety', 'contemporary' which are two factor that support my neutral and objective attitude. It suggests a way to see the true features of the era rather than just interpreting it notionally. Moreover, it goes through how the way the work is done in big cities and its contents or actions have relations with contemporary characteristics. Also give an explanation about the each various methods with details. Through this study, it has been realized that artwork, when it comes to researcher, is a process to accept the era not an process to avoid the despair of it. Based on such findings, I will keep trying to stay neutral when analysis the era and continue the artwork.;본 연구는 도시 속에서 살아가며, 동시대를 중립적으로 바라보고 파악한 시대적 흐름과 특성들을 다양한 표현 방식을 통해 작업으로 전개하는 과정을 담고 있다. 우리의 삶은 필연적으로 자신이 속한 시대 속에서 펼쳐진다. 시대의 특징은 어떠한 일관된 흐름을 가지며 개인의 삶의 방식과 의식에 큰 영향을 미치는 것이 사실이다. 특히 우리가 살아가는 신자유주의 시대는 자유로움을 강조하여 얼핏 보면 긍정적으로 보여 질 수 있지만, 막상 그 자유는 우리 앞에 불확실함으로 다가온다. 이로 인해 개인은 사회 속에서 점점 흐려지는 자신의 존재감과 막연한 미래에 불안함을 느끼며 자본이 만들어내는 욕망에 따라 소비는 자신의 존재가치를 확실하게 증명하도록 만들어준다. 따라서 오늘날 수단을 넘어 목적이 되어버린 재화·물질을 위해 우리는 치열한 경쟁의 장에 빠져들고, 끊임없이 소비하며 자신의 존재감을 만들어나간다. 우리는 이러한 시대 속에서 주체적인 시각과 판단을 잃고, 점점 자본의 논리에만 순응하며 살아가는 모습을 보이고 있다. 연구자는 이러한 시대에 문제의식을 가지며 어떤 방식으로 살아가고, 작업을 해야 할지 많은 고민을 하고 있다. 하지만 분명한 사실은 살아있는 한 결코 이 시대를 벗어나기란 불가능하다는 것이었으며, 이에 연구자는 시대를 어떤 하나의 극단으로 왜곡시키지 않고 있는 그대로 바라보려는 태도를 유지하고자한다. 정확한 진단만이 최선의 치료법을 찾아내는 것처럼, ‘그대로 받아들임’은 무기력이나 무책임한 내맡김이 아닌, 시대를 정확히 보기 위한 태도이다. 특히, 대도시는 연구자에게 있어 매우 중요한 공간이다. 대도시에는 시대적 흐름이 그 어떤 곳보다 응축되고 두드러진 모습으로 나타나기에 동시대성을 파악하기에 가장 적합한 공간이다. 연구자는 도시 속에서 일상을 전개하며 그로부터 소재와 재료들을 찾아 작업을 전개한다. 작업들은 각자 다양한 이야기들을 담고 있으며, 방식 또한 퍼포먼스 영상, 콜라주, 사진, 설치, 회화, 입체 등 다양하게 나타난다. 이러한 작업 내용을 설명하는 주요한 단어들 - ‘산발적, 부분적, 파편적, 우발적, 임의적’- 은 모두 불확실한 동시대에서 비롯된다. 본 논문에서는 일단 지금 시대의 모습을, 그 중에서도 어두운 부분들을 살펴보는 것을 시작으로 연구자의 중립적·객관적인 태도를 뒷받침해주는 ‘불안’과 ‘동시대인’ 사유를 살펴본다. 이것들은 사전적 의미 그대로 해석되는 것이 아니라 진정한 시대의 모습을 바라보는 길을 제시해준다. 또한, 도시에서 작업을 전개시키는 방식과 내용 그리고 행위가 동시대적 특성과 어떤 연관을 맺는지 살펴본다. 그리고 다양한 방식으로 전개되는 작업들을 각자의 구체적인 이야기들로 설명한다. 본 연구를 통해 연구자에게 있어 작업이란 벗어날 수 없는 시대의 절망을 회피하는 것이 아닌, 받아들이는 과정이라는 것을 계속해서 인지하게 되었다. 이것을 기반으로 앞으로도 시대를 객관적으로 바라보는 태도를 유지하며 작업을 해나가고자 한다.
