Program Annotation

Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze and interpret various songs of composers who have been worldwidely selected. After process of research including characteristics of each song in my recital program, I aim to enhance the understanding of each song and inform the notices and several advice by analyzing the relation between lyrics and melody of each song, the expression written in the score when other singers actually perform those songs. In this thesis, I study songs of my graduation recital program; the oratorio of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi(1710~1736),《Stabat Mater》song cycle of Gioachino Rossini(1792~1868),《La regata veneziana》the four French songs written by Francesco Paolo Tosti(1846~1916),《Three Shakespeare Song Op.6》 by Roger Quilter(1877~1953), The oratorio of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi(1710~1736),《Stabat Mater》, <Cujus animam grmentem>, <Vidit suum dulcem natum> show the anguish mind of the Virgin Mary who sees Jesus nailed to the Cross. The lyrics and melody are in a great harmony, and the sad. Tragic tune effectively embodies the sorrow and sadness the composer intended to. Gioachino Rossini(1792~1868) was an Italian composer who got fame and love by people because of the opera composition in that time.《La regata veneziana》, is a song cycle consisting of three songs(<Anzoleta avanti la regata>, <Anzoleta co passa la regatta>, <Anzoleta dopo la regata>). It is a song that greatly displays the emotion of a main character who is cheering her lover. He has participated in a gondola race which is opened in the present, and the song was divided into three parts; before the race, in the race, after the race. Francesco Paolo Tosti(1846~1916) was a composer who wrote hundreds of the French and the Britain songs as well as the Italian songs. Many famous songs were written by Tosti, but in this thesis, I analyze a music of his four unfamous French songs that show the harmony of the lyrics and melody. The four songs are<Chanson de Barberine>, <Chanson de l'Adieu>, <Malgre moi>,〈Je pleure!>. Through the elegant melody with less chord change, Tosti expresses his main composition subject "love" pathetically and splendidly. Roger Quilter(1877~1953) was the Britain composer who wrote 112 songs in his life. Among his many songs,《Three Shakespeare Song Op.6》the first work writing lyrics to a poem of William Shakespeare (1564~1616).《Three Shakespeare Song Op.6》consists of three songs;<Come away, Death>, <O Mistress mine>, <Blow, blow, thou winter wind>, I identify his popularity by studying the phrasing of words and exact strength and weakness, comfortable rhythm use in his songs. Through the harmony between the tune and accompaniment, I also confirm a mournful emotion of death and love in his full and natural chord.;본 논문은 본인의 석사과정 졸업연주회 프로그램을 중심으로 각 작곡가의 생애와, 악곡의 음악적 특징을 살펴본 다음 각 곡의 가사와 멜로디의 연관성, 악보에 기록된 악상 표현 등을 실제 연주와 관련하여 연구함으로써 해당 곡들에 대한 이해를 높임과 동시에 향후 이 곡들을 연주할 때 연주자들이 실제로 참고하고 주의해야 할 점이 무엇인지를 밝히는 데 그 목적이 있다. 본고에서는 연주한 전체 프로그램 중 지오반니 바티스타 페르골레지(Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, 1710~1736)의 오라토리오《슬픔의 성모(Stabat Mater)》, 조아키노 안토니오 롯시니(Gioachino Antonio Rossini, 1792~1868)의 연가곡 《베네치아의 곤돌라 경주(La regata veneziana)》, 프란체스코 파올로 토스티(Francesco Paolo Tosti, 1846~1916)가 쓴 불어 가곡 중 4곡, 로저 퀼터(Roger Quilter, 1877~1953)의《세 개의 셰익스피어 노래(Three Shakespeare Songs Op.6)》를 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 페르골레지의 오라토리오《슬픔의 성모(Stabat Mater)》는 그가 쓴 마지막 작품이다. 그 중 두 번 째 곡인 <Cujus animam gementem>과 여섯 번 째 곡인 <Vidit suum dulcem natum>은 소프라노 독창곡으로 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도를 바라보면서 슬퍼하는 성모 마리아와 비탄에 잠긴 아픈 마음을 가사와 선율의 조화를 통해 그리고 있다. 롯시니의 연가곡《베네치아의 곤돌라 경주(La regata veneziana)》는 총 3곡으로 이루어져 있다. 곤돌라 경주를 배경으로 경주 전, 경주 중, 경주 후, 3부분으로 나누어 경주에 참여한 애인을 응원하는 주인공의 감정을 잘 묘사해 마치 직접 경기를 보는 듯 실감나게 그려낸 작품이다. 토스티는 이탈리아 작곡가로 이탈리아 가곡 뿐 아니라 영국, 프랑스의 가곡들도 작곡하였다. 본고에서는 아직 많이 알려지지 않은 불어가곡 4곡, <바흐브린의 노래(Chanson de Barberine)>, <이별의 노래(Chanson de l’Adieu)>, <그럼에도 불구하고 난(Malgré moi)>, <나는 우네(Je pleure!...)>에 대해 연구하였다. 그의 주된 작곡 주제인‘사랑’을 가사와 선율의 조화를 통해 애절하게 표현했다. 퀼터는 영국 작곡가로 일생동안 112곡의 가곡들을 작곡하였다. 그의 수많은 작품 중에서 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare, 1564~1516)의 시에 곡을 붙인 첫 번째 작품이다. 총 3곡으로 구성되어 있는《세 개의 셰익스피어 노래(Three Shakespeare Songs Op.6)》를 통해 죽음과 사랑을 주제로 한 셰익스피어의 시들을 서정적인 선율과 반주를 통해 나타내고 있음을 알 수 있다.
