- Abstract
This thesis is an analytical research on (1918), which was performed at the writer’s graduation recital. The work was written by Richard Strauss (1864-1949), a composer of the late German Romantic era. Strauss composed the work based on the five songs sung by Ophelia, who has turned insane. The songs were taken from Hamlet, one of the four tragedies by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Before examining the work of Strauss, the study will look into Shakespeare’s Hamlet, due to difficulties of comprehending and performing the work by simply analyzing the texts.
Along with Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), Strauss composed many great symphonies and operas as a leading composer and conductor of the late German Romantic period. His lieder received less attention compared to his reputation in symphonies and operas at the time. However, his great majority of the 200 art songs from the late 19th century to the early 20th century reflect the transition of his musical language. In addition, no one can deny that Strauss showed his superior ability in his lieder.
The thesis will analyze , a later work of Strauss, and research on Shakespeare along with his tragedy Hamlet in advance. Then, a study on the situation of Ophelia and her five songs, which were widely sung during the time of Shakespeare, will be carried out to help understand the song cycle.
For the analysis of , scores were used from Lieder Gesamtausgabe, published by Boosey & Hawkes in 1964.
