프란체스카 카치니의 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서 룻지에로의 해방>의 여성 캐릭터 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 프란체스카 카치니(Francesca Caccini, 1587~1645)의 현존 작품 중 유일한 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서 룻지에로의 해방(La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina)>에 나타나는 여성 캐릭터를 연구하였다. 폴란드의 왕자 브와디스와프(Wladyslaw IV Vasa, 1595~1648)의 토스카나 대공국 방문 축하 공연을 목적으로 작곡된 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서 룻지에로의 해방>은 대본과 음악 구성이 여성 캐릭터를 중심으로 진행되는 특징을 가졌다. 80분간 연주되는 이 오페라는 일반적이지 않게 오페라를 끌고 나가는 주요 인물들이 여성 캐릭터들에 집중되어있다. 대표적 예가 실질적 주인공이 룻지에로가 아닌 제목에서 전혀 드러나지 않는 멜리사인 것으로 통해 나타난다. 이는 프란체스카가 작품을 의뢰한 토스카나의 대공비들의 여성 섭정의 모습을 작품에 반영하려는 의도 안에서 이루어 졌다. 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서 룻지에로의 해방>에서 나타나는 여성 캐릭터들의 음악적 구성이나 비중과 이야기 전개에 있어서의 역할은 수많은 오페라들 중 독보적인 작품 중 하나이며, 후대의 작곡가 벨리니(Vincenzo Bellini, 1801-1835)의 <노르마(Norma)>같은 여성 캐릭터를 주인공으로 내세운 오페라의 최초의 시도라 할 수 있다. 프란체스카 카치니는 여성캐릭터들을 내세워서 다양한 음악적 시도들을 하였다. 이러한 시도들은 동시에 프란체스카 카치니의 창의적이고 다채로운 음악 스타일의 예시로도 직결되며 여성 신분의 한계를 넘어서 오랜 시간 동안 메디치 궁에서 작곡가로 활동할 수 있었던 프란체스카 카치니의 음악적 역량을 보여준다. 프란체스카의 극작품 중 대표작인 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서의 룻지에로의 해방>은 최초로 여성이 작곡한 오페라이며 동시에 처음으로 외국에서 공연된 이탈리아 오페라라는 대표적인 특징을 가지고 있다. 때문에 많은 학자들이 프란체스카 카치니를 대표하는 작품으로서 오페라<알치나의 섬에서의 룻지에로의 해방>을 언급할 때 이 두 가지 특징에 집중하여 이야기할 뿐, 작품 속에 나타나는 특징에 대한 연구는 체계적으로 하지 않았다. 따라서 본고에서는 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서의 룻지에로의 해방>에 여성섭정사회가 작품에 미친 영향을 바탕으로 작품을 주도하는 여성 캐릭터들을 분석하고 여기에 뒤따르는 음악적 특징들을 살펴보고자 한다. 토스카나 대공국의 소속 작곡가로서 확고한 위치를 잡았던 프란체스카의 작곡가적 입지와 활동을 살펴보기 위해 프란체스카의 생애를 살펴보고 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서의 룻지에로의 해방>의 제작 과정과 작곡 배경, 오페라의 음악 구성과 대본에서 드러나는 특징들을 중심으로 분석하여 작곡가가 이 작품을 통해 보여준 다양하고도 독특한 음악적 시도의 의미를 고찰하여 여성 섭정이 어떤 식으로 이 작품에 영향을 미쳤는지 알아본다. 이를 통해 오페라가 탄생한 초기에 남성 캐릭터들의 부재 속에 여성 캐릭터들로 채워지는 구성으로도 성공할 수 있다는 사례를 남긴 프란체스카 카치니의 오페라 <알치나의 섬에서 룻지에로의 해방>에 대한 가치와 의미를 고찰하고 여기서 더 나아가 이제까지 잘 알려지지 않았던 탁월한 작곡가 프란체스카 카치니의 생애와 이 작품에 대한 음악학도 들의 관심을 불러일으키고 연주를 위한 이 공연의 정보를 제공을 하고자 한다.;This thesis is to study female characters of <La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina>, the only surviving opera of Francesca Caccini. This piece was originally composed to celebrate a Polish prince, Wladyslaw (1595-1648)’s visit to Tuscany Archdukedom and shows an unusual feature of female-centered storytelling and musical configuration. During 80 minutes running time only one male character appears and the rest are all females, which is quite extraordinary considering the operatic convention of that time. Furthermore the actual main character is Melissa, not Ruggiero shown in title. This is because it had an intention of reflecting the feature of two female regents of Tuscany archdukedom who requested the composition of this opera to Francesca. It heralded the appearance of operatic style in which female characters play main roles like opera Norma of Vincenzo Bellini(1801-1835). These features are good examples of her creative and rich musical styles and also show her musical capacity as a female composer who overcame gender discrimination and served as a court composer in Medici palace for a long time <La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina> is the very first opera that was composed by a female composer and it is the first Italian opera that was premiered outside Italy. When scholars studied on <La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina>, it seems that they usually dealt with these two facts, lacking a systematic study on specific features that are well-reflected in it. Hence this study aims to review them based on the influence that the female regents-ruled society had on this piece. This study intends to review her life and the compositional background and process in order to grasp her position as a musical composer who already had had a secure position as a court composer in Tuscany Archdukedom and to see how the rule of two female regents influenced this opera. I hope that, by doing so, I will be able to invite musicians’attention to this great composer who hasn’t been known well so far and to her opera, <La Liberazione Di Dall’isola D’Alcina>, and to provide information on this work that is needed to perform it.
