Abstract

본 논문은 필자의 석사과정 이수를 위한 졸업 연주 프로그램에 대한 연구이다. 필자는 졸업연주회의 주제를 1부는 ‘신자들의 신앙고백’과 2부는 ‘예수님의 생애’로 정하고 1부에서는 가브리엘 포레(Gabriel Faure, 1845-1924)의 「Requiem Op.48(레퀴엠)」 중 5번 “Agnus Dei(하나님의 어린 양)”과 6번 “Libera Me(저를 구원하소서)”, 2부에서는 얀 피에테르손 스벨링크(Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, 1562-1621)의 「Cantiones Sacrae(성가 모음곡)」에 수록된 “Hodie Christus natus Est!(오늘 그리스도께서 탄생하셨다!)”, 하인리히 쉬츠(Heinrich Schütz, 1585-1672)의 「Cantiones Sacrae(성가 모음곡)」에 수록된 모테트 “Cantate Domino(하나님을 찬양하라)”, 랠프 본윌리엄즈(Ralph Vaughan-Williams, 1872-1958)의 「Five Mystical Songs(5개의 신비로운 노래)」 중 5번 “Antiphon(안티폰)”, 끝으로, 프랑시스 풀랑크(Francis Poulenc, 1899-1963)의 「Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noël(4개의 성탄시기 모테트)」 중 1번 “O Magnum mysterium(오, 신비한 능력이여)”을 연주했다. 실제 연주에서는 포레 레퀴엠의 5악장과 6악장을 1부에, 2부에는 쉬츠의 “Cantate Domino(찬양)”, 풀랑크의 “O Magnum mysterium”과 “Hodie Christus natus Est!(탄생)”, “Antiphon(부활)”의 순서로 연주했으나, 본 논문은 작곡가의 탄생시기 순서로 정리했고 작곡가의 생애와 주요작품, 각 곡들의 내용과 특징에 대해 연구한 것이다. 스벨링크는 르네상스 시대의 네덜란드 작곡가로 북유럽을 무대로 오르간과 합창음악 등의 활발한 작곡활동을 통해 명성을 누렸다. 그의 작품 「Cantiones Sacrae」는 40개의 라틴어 모테트로 구성되어 있고 1619년 Antwerp 출판사를 통해 출판되었다. 필자가 연주한 곡은 이 작품 중 13번곡인 “Hodie Christus natus Est!”으로 성탄절에 베스퍼스 예배 전례를 위해 작곡된 곡으로 성경의 누가복음 2장과 시편 33편을 가사로 한다. 바로크 시대의 작곡가로서 독일 교회음악의 기초를 만든 쉬츠가 1625년 출간한 「Cantiones Sacrae」에 수록된 모테트 “Cantate Domino”는 그가 1617년에 작센 선거후의 궁정악장으로 있을 때 작곡한 곡으로 작곡자 특유의 작곡기법인 대위법과 바로크적 요소가 특징이다. 프랑스 낭만의 대표적 작곡가인 포레가 아버지와 어머니의 임종을 차례로 겪으며 부모님을 추모하기 위해 작곡되었다고 알려져 있는 「Requiem Op.48」은 죽음과 심판에 대한 막연한 두려움보다는 천국을 소망하는 구원의 간구라는 점에서 포레 이전의 다른 레퀴엠과 차별성을 가진다. 영국의 대표적인 작곡가 헨리 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695)과 벤자민 브리튼(Edward Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)을 잇는 가교역할을 하는 작곡가로 평가받는 본윌리엄스 노영혜, 「객석(1992)」, (서울:(주)예움, 1992.), p.161 의 「Five Mystical Songs」은 17세기의 종교시인 George Herbert(1593-1633)의 시를 5악장의 곡에 담고 있으며, 예수님의 부활을 주제로 다루고 있다. 20세기 프랑스를 대표하는 작곡가 풀랑크는 성탄시기를 위한 4개의 모테트를「Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noël」에 담아내고 있는데, 이 중 1번곡인 “O Magnum mysterium”은 예수님의 탄생의 신비를 노래하고 있다. 필자는 위에 소개한 5개의 작품들을 연주한 입장에서 곡의 시대적 배경과 작곡가의 음악적 특징을 중심을 살펴보고 연주와 해석에 있어 그 이해를 돕고자 한다.;This annotation examines the various characteristics and background of the following pieces performed in my graduate recital for M.M. degree: J. P. Sweelinck’s “Hodie Christus natus Est!”, H. Schütz’s “Cantate Domino”, G. Fauré’s “Agnus Dei”, “Libera Me”, R. Vaughan-Williams’s “Antiphon”, F. Poulenc’s “O Magnum mysterium”. Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s “Hodie Christus natus Est!”, an unaccompanied 5-part sacred music from his motet collection 「Cationes Sacrae」 composed in 1619, celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. This motet can be divided into four sections according to the text, and 4-bar-phrase refrain of “Hodie!” goes ahead each section. Lyrics are based on Luke 2:11, 13-14 and Psalm 33:1. Heinrich Schütz’s “Cantate Domino” is from 「Cationes Sacrae」, pubished in 1625, and it is also devoted to glorifying Jesus Christ. The song is divided into 7 parts according to the lyrics, Psalm 149:1-3. This song is renowned for its vitality. Gabriel Fauré’s 「Requiem Op.48」 is composed in 1886 to commemorate the death of his parents. The piece is thus designed to perform the prayer of salvation, wishing them to rest in heavenly bliss. Amongst 7 movements, I chose two movements, No. 5 “Agnus Dei” and No. 6 “Libera me” for my recital. Ralph Vaughan-Williams' 「Five Mystical Songs」 consists of five movements and I performed the fifth, “Antiphon” in my recital. “Antiphon” is based on the poem of the same title by George Herbert, a religious poet of the 17th century, and it deals with the stories concerning the resurrection of Jesus. The motif of 'My God and King' as a hemiola comes out repeatedly, functioning as a refrain throughout the song. This song is mostly distinguished by its vividly-moving notes, energetic passages, and rapid change of dynamic and texture. Francis Poulenc's 「Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noël」 is made of four songs. It represents the important events related to the birth of the Savior in an intense manner. The first song, "O Magnum mysterium," played in my recital, is famous for its rich and sublime representation of the story of the Lord's mysterious(mysterium) birth. The song is divided into two sections and maintains the traditional harmonic composition. Yet, at the same time, it also evokes a mystical atmosphere by adding an unique sense of color to the performance with unexpected dissonances. This paper has investigated the biographical aspects, structural features, and musical settings of each individual song performed in my recital as required for the completion of my graduate program. I hope this would help the future students, regardless of whether they are composers or choir members, to better organize their recital with a good build-up and to deliver a quality performance.
