Abstract
Hallyu and especially K-dramas are spreading knowledge of Korea to the world, re-shaping or/and building an attractive image of the country and its culture. The South Korean government is trying to regulate pop-culture diplomacy activities in link with Hallyu in order to increase their soft power. Among those activities, they support the production of K-dramas. The study findings are based on research on Korean pop-culture diplomacy goals and strategies, complemented with an overview of dramas types and content – their various changes that impact their content and popularity for international viewers after 2008 – and of leading Hallyu dramas. That research is complemented with a further analysis of the results of qualitative interviews done with twenty foreign drama viewers (living out of the region where Hallyu is the most popular). Each drama introduces the country and its culture under different lights, but three groups of dramas can be distinguished. This study introduces the distinction between three types: contemporary, historical and non-linear drama. The time setting of dramas is the indicator which categorizes the three types. Contemporary dramas are dramas set in modern Korea. Historical dramas are dramas set in Korean history (with or without actual historical facts). Non-linear dramas are a combination of contemporary and historical dramas: they show both present and past Korea. Non-linear dramas offer an image of trendy Korean urban culture with the country’s ‘global-ness’ (on the modern side), together with a rich unique traditional heritage shown in an entertaining story (on the historical side) all in one production. K-drama viewers like dramas because they feel they are learning something “new”; it makes them receptive and curious to Korean assets. Viewers feel attracted to the “uniqueness” of Korea and its balance of traditional and modern culture. According to the research, the government should subvention dramas (1) with good plot, (2) with an attractive content (with Korean folklore and/or with traditional clothes), (3) with an attractive casting (Idols and actors famous after 2008), (4) with an attractive drama type (which is non-linear drama type). It will build a positive and attractive image of the country and its culture to international K-drama viewers.;한류는 특히 2008년 이후 세계에 한국을 알리는 좋은 계기가 되고 있다.
