Peer relationships are relationships formed spontaneously with those around the approximate age, who live in the same space or group. Peer relationships, which were formed during childhood, account for a profound impact on the process of a series of developments in psychological and social adjustment, lifestyle and behavior patterns throughout youth and into adulthood. Thus, they play a prominent role in the socialization process and they are an important issue to deal with due to the enhanced difficulty of psychological and social adjustment for youth discharged from residential child welfare institutions. However, so far, this topic has not yet been considered as an important resource for the psychological and social adjustment areas in previous research. The purpose of this study is to find resources in the psychological and the social areas which are neglected in independent living research on youth discharged from residential child welfare institutions, and to suggest practice and policy implications for youth discharged from residential child welfare institutions. Five research participants were selected who had lived for over 10 years in the same residential child welfare institution, but manifested different features of peer relationships. The data were collected from in-depth interviews and a focus group interview. Research method analysis and interpretation is based on Stake's qualitative case studies (1995), and categorized into the main subjects. The results of this study are as follows. First, before being discharged from the residential child welfare institution, peer relationships manifested remarkably more 'repulsion force' than 'attraction force'. Here are categorized as following categories, while they live together, "The friends' parents hate me", "It is inconvenient to have no privacy", and "We do pretend not to know each other outside". They manifested remarkably stronger 'repulsion force' than 'attraction force' in the sense of that there were no security for their privacy and in their desire to build new relationships with friends outside of the residential child welfare institution. Second, after being discharged from the residential child welfare institution, their peer relationships manifested remarkably more 'attraction force' than 'repulsion force'. They returned to their familiar relationships with residential child welfare institution friends after being discharged from the residential child welfare institution. Here are the following categorized, "There was a time of searching for each other", "These are the most comfortable relationships because they are familiar.", and "There is a strength like family". Third, the qualitative result of peer relationships has been changed as time passes, before and after being discharged from residential child welfare institution. Both ‘repulsion force' and 'attraction force' coexisted. After discharged from the residential child welfare institution as time passed, however, they have suffered from relationships. They manifested 'repulsion force' before being discharged from the residential child welfare institutions, but they manifested 'attraction force’ after being discharged from the residential child welfare institution. On the basis of this result, after residential child welfare institution peer relationships have had a positive influenced on enhancing psychological and social independent living. In short, the results of the analysis drew 2 upper categories such as 'attraction force' and 'repulsion force', and total 10 subcategories. To sum up, the main theme indicate 'tug-of-war between the attraction force and repulsion force'. On the basis of the results, the implications for social welfare are as follows. First, the residential child welfare institution is required to do active intervention for youth in the residential child welfare institution to improve relations with friends outside of the residential child welfare institution and at school life. Second, being discharged from the residential child welfare institution, it requires case management of youth for improving in the psychological and social areas. Third, appropriate program development is required for youth in residential child welfare institutions for healthy peer relationships. Fourth, a social networking system such as 'social group guardians' is required to support their peer relationships for youth in each residential child welfare institution. Fifth, the dissemination of independent living group homes for youth who keep in touch after being discharged from residential child welfare institutions and appropriate intervention as a social worker are required. In conclusion, peer relationships formed with residential child welfare institution friends, can be significant resources in terms of independent living of youth after being discharged from the residential child welfare institution. Henceforth, I hope that this study will lay the foundation of the baseline data in the field for youth discharged from residential child welfare institutions and this study has worth to verify that peer relationships are a significant resource in terms of psychological and social areas in the unofficial supportive system.;또래관계(peer relationships)란 같은 공간이나 집단 속에서 생활하는 비슷한 나이의 구성원을 중심으로 자발적으로 형성된 관계를 의미한다.
