Abstract
The purpose of the study was to develop the program of science field trip in Yangdong Village and to find the educational effect of the program. The study would analyze the effect of smart device and measuring tool in learning, especially as a tool of measurement. Yangdong Village is the World Cultural Heritage which has been built in the early years of the Choseon Dynasty and been well-preserved until now. The houses and its location of Yangdong Village reflect the traditional values and social system of the Choseon Dynasty. In particular, Yangdong Village, a cultural heritage in the form of village, is invaluable as a form of living resident at the current status. Yangdong Village with historicity and reality is expected to be used in scientific inquiry. To develop the science field trip in Yangdong Village, we analyzed the previous studies in Yangdong Village, field trip, scientific inquiry, and visited the Yangdong Village for several times. Through the analysis of previous studies and field studies, I developed the program of science field trip in Yangdong Village which includes in-class and field trip learning. The program was applied to the 7th and 8th graders in after-school science class hosted by a university in Seoul. To understand the educational effect of smart device, all of the student activities and interviews were recorded, opinionnaire before and after class, students’activity sheets, and presentation materials were collected. The collected materials were repeatedly analyzed and the all analysis process were regularly discussed with an expert of science education. The results are as follows. First, the groups using a smart device had a science experience of poor measurement activity due to the automatical application of smart device. Cultural heritage is the place to directly identify what students learned in class and experience the emotional learning. The groups using a smart device had the science experience focusing on cultural heritage. Therefore, the students formed the knowledge emphasizing on the social and cultural contents rather than the natural environment of the Yangdong Village, and had their own sense of place for the Yangdong Village. Second, the groups using measurement tools repeatedly measured the natural and environmental factors such as temperature, wind direction, and wind speed, and had the science experiences focusing on the measurement activity. In process of measurement, students made the results their own knowledge, and their newly formed knowledge was mainly about the natural environment of the Yangdong Village. They had a comprehensive understanding of the Yangdong Village. The groups using measurement devices learned science in Yangdong Village as a cultural heritage, but they had the science experience emphasizing on scientific activity. They thought a cultural heritage site as the educational place to feel with various senses, and felt the lack of experiences of soil smell and scenery of the Yangdong Village. Third, the science program in the Yangdong Village has a diverse educational value. Yangdong Village, World Cultural Heritage, has the sense of place as well as the sense of space. The spatiality of World Cultural Heritage enables students’science activity more diverse. In addition, the historicity of World Cultural Heritage offers the social and cultural context. In the science learning with a strong social and cultural context, science could be approached as a process. The Yangdong science program used the scientific inquiry as a process, and measuring and interpreting was emphasized in the scientific skill. This study showed that cultural heritage and measuring tool influence on students’ learning experience. A further research for analyzing the educational effect of smart devices and measurement tools as scientific inquiry in science learning is recommended. In addition, it is necessary to thoroughly analyze the educational effects influencing on students, such as the properties of cultural heritage, learning tool, and learning context.
