Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine evidence for song composition to enhance emotional expressions by investigating prosodic characteristics of emotional vocabularies converted to melodic elements based on similarities between music and language. Also the differences among composition and harmonic progression matched to emotional vocabularies were examined that supports different emotional aspects. For such purpose, in Study I, words utterance of 30 adult females (19~23years) who speak standard Korean language expressing emotional vocabularies of happiness, anger and sadness were collected. Each syllable in the emotional vocabularies of the collected data was analyzed using speech analysis program Praat, in terms of average frequency (f0), articulation time (ms) and intensity (dB). After extracting identical patterns, the data was transformed into melodic elements, in terms of average tone, melodic patterns, tempo, loudness and accent. In Study II, eight (8) professional music therapists with experiences of applying song writing method to adult population were asked to compose chords and chord progression reflecting the emotional vocabularies and to provide qualitative statements rationales behind their compositions. The collected data was analyzed for the rate of use in tonic chord/substitute chord, major triad/minor triad/augmented chord/diminished chord and triad/7th chord/tension chord, and the similarities among qualitative statements and rationales were also analyzed. In order to secure validity of the result, a verification process of sound sources reflecting the results of the study in terms of chord compositions and progressions with the highest rate of use among the music therapists and common prosodic patterns among the participants were carried out by music therapy and music majors. ● Prosodic and tonal characters according to emotional vocabularies Result of study I showed differences among prosodic and melodic characteristics different emotional vocabularies. First, differences in average tone, register, melodic pattern, tempo, loudness, accent among different emotions were found. Happiness and anger in high energy level and arousal state were expressed with higher register, faster tempo and greater strength while sadness in low energy level and arousal state was expressed with lower register and tempo, weaker strength. This results suggest to create different melodic patterns, rhythm, tempo, dynamics in consideration of the emotion reflected in vocabulary. In particular, the prosodic characters of Korean language, which varies depending on the beginning of the first phonological phrase, placement of vocabulary in a sentence and numbers of syllables, can be reflected in song composition. Second, happiness was converted to an average tone of B3, anger was A3, and sadness was G3. This results suggest to create different register according to emotions in vocabularies. However, in clinical settings, the universality of use in melodic elements should be considered, also individual attributes such as average register, sex, vocal characteristics and the level and range of experience of the emotion should be considered to match the expression of each client. Third, significant difference in frequency (Hz) between happiness and anger, length (ms) between happiness and sadness, and in intensity (dB) between sadness and anger were found. This results suggest to create distinguished musical elements through the emotional states. ● Chords construction and progression according to emotional vocabularies Result of Study II demonstrated differences among chord compositions and progressions-the essential element of music that supports emotional aspects-according to emotional vocabularies. First, for differences in chord composition according to emotion, happiness showed high rates of using tonic chords, major triads while anger showed high rates of using tonic chords, minor triads, and tension chord with augmented chords, which is distinctive to other emotions. Sadness showed high rates of using tonic chords, minor triads, 7th chords and tension chords with similar rates of use compared to other emotions, and use of diminished chords were also observed. Second, for differences in chord progression according to emotion, it was observed that unresolved development of 7th chord, consecutive progression of identical chords, consecutive change of chords and chromatic chord progression were used to express meanings and attributes of emotions. This results suggest identical chord progression can be used for expression of different emotional dimensions. Third, insignificant results among emotional state between anger and sadness were found in chords and chord progressions. This results suggest that use of multi-dimensional musical elements such as melody, rhythm, tempo, dynamic are critical to properly express intrinsic attributes of emotions with similar emotional attributes. ● Future study This study provides a basis to transform prosodic characteristics used in emotional expression into melodic characteristics and to create distinguished melodic elements for different emotions. Moreover, this study suggests that chord composition and progressions support different emotional aspects of distinctive emotions. Ultimately, the study provides an indicator for music therapists who create songs and use chords based on their subjective opinions by suggesting basis for song composition. Future studies should be carried out to apply results of the current study to support emotional expressions in song composition process.;본 연구는 노래만들기 방안의 근거를 제시하기 위한 목적으로 정서 어휘에 반영된 운율을 선율 요소로 전환한 특성을 알아보고, 정서 어휘에 따라 적합한 화음의 구성과 전개가 어떠한가를 조사하였다.
