Abstract
Empathy has become an interest area of research especially in the fields of counseling and psychotherapy. Empathy is the innate ability to feel or resonate and respond to the inner state of others. When empathy is directed towards oneself, noticing the inner state of oneself, then it can be named as self-empathy. The purpose of the study is to examine the phenomenon of self-empathy in the music and imagery experience using grounded theory in order to derive theoretical foundation of self-empathy process and meaning of music and imagery in this process. A total of 12 participants received single Music and Imagery (MI) session, and materials and transcripts that pertain to their experience of self-empathy were obtained from in-depth interviews and the individual sessions. The analyzed transcripts showed that all participants experienced some elements of self-empathy either in emotional, cognitive or relational dimensions. Data were analyzed further to derive coding paradigm for grounded theory model. Total of 147 concepts derived from open coding are categorized into 15 sub-categories of self-empathy: 'self-comfort,' 'self-preservation,' 'self-confrontation,' 'emotional awareness,' 'physical-sensible awareness,' 'reflecting inner self-objects in music,' 'resonating music with emotion,' 'exploring novelty along with music,' 'holding,' 'inner hearing(being attentive),' 'being immersed,' 'deepening,' 'acquiring new perspectives,' 'acquiring new emotion,' and 'acquiring new sensation.' For axial coding, 6 paradigm categories were derived: 'contact with inner desire,' 'inner or external self-awareness,' 'music attunement,' 'maintenance of high acceptance,' 'self-permission,' and 'self-acceptance.' The required condition for self-empathy phenomenon appeared to be 'contact with inner desire'and the contextual condition was 'inner or external self-awareness.' The core phenomenon was music attunement, and the intervention condition that protects the core phenomenon from any hindrance was 'maintenance of high receptivity(openness).' Also, the intervention condition that facilitates the core phenomenon was 'self-allowance,' and the consequence of the self-empathy paradigm was self-acceptance (accepting what is noticed to empathize). Accordingly, the self-empathy paradigm of MI was constructed over various types of conditions. All the participants were involved in the self-empathy experience, by coming in contact with inner desire. The most recent inner desire was identified just before or in the beginning of the MI sessions. As the individuals came in contact with their inner desire, they gained sense of feeling and their physical conditions were examined meticulously. These mode of gaining awareness became more specific with help of music and imagery as music listening began. During music listening, they become attuned to music which is the core event in the self-empathy process. They mirror themselves in the music, resonate or explore newness as music leads them within time. In the moments where there is less music attunement, they remain in the imagery or listen more deeply to the music with receptive attitudes. Further, they become self-allowing to be more attuned to music. Then, self-allowance facilitates individuals to be more involved, attentive and expressive to the deepened experience. As result of music attunement, the individuals reach the point of self-acceptance. The new learning of self, and gaining perspectives, new emotions, and body sensations are all acceptable as part of where they are at. This may be the ultimate consequence of self-empathy in the MI sessions. In the self-empathy process, self-empathy facilitated by MI in various dimensions, including emotional and cognitive, vary depending on the individual. The theoretical model for self-empathy process shows that it can serve as the framework of a single session. Further, the three subcategories of music attunement in the process of self-empathy can be analyzed and examined. The core phenomenon derived from 147 concepts, 15 subcategories, and 6 paradigm categories was 'music attunement.' Accordingly, a major discussion of this study is how music functioned in the process of self-empathy as regards the result presenting music attunement as the core phenomenon in the self-empathy process in MI session. Music attunement induced experience of cognitive-emotional union, the highest level of emotional communion, and this could be considered as the greatest significance of this study. Music attunement phenomenon appeared remarkably in the 'transition' phase where music performs the role of a 'therapist,' and the 'music listening & imagery work' phase of MI. It could be interpreted that music carries out self-empathy function as an exploration vehicle searching for novelty in internal operation, a mirror reflecting self inner object, and a resonator to the emotion experienced 'here & now.' Therefore, the Music and Imagery technique could be regarded as a useful psychotherapy technique that activates emotional and cognitive factors of self-empathy in the inner process of participants. Additionally, the self-empathy concept could provide inter-subjective interpretations emphasizing the context of clients' process of change in MI sessions. Furthermore, the understanding of self empathy role and function of music could be utilized in training emotional communion for MI trainee, Music Therapists, health care professionals. This study is anticipated to guide further research and extension of the role and function of music as an affective attunement of emotional communer.;자신과 타인의 내면의 상태를 정확히 지각하고 그에 대해 적절한 반응하는 인간의 고유 능력인 공감(empathy)은 최근 다양한 학문적 영역에서 연구 대상이 되고 있으며(Coplan & Goldie, 2011), 특히 인간의 내면을 다루는 상담과 심리치료 분야에서는 치료의 핵심적 요인(Rogers, 1985; Rowe & MacIsaac, 2000)으로 중시되고 있다.
