Abstract
(The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts: CCSS, The purpose of this study was to analyze the text level of creative tales for young children in 「Teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri system」 in accordance with children’s age, theme and genre of creative tale. Three research questions are as follows. 1. How are the text level of creative tales in the 「Teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri system」 by children’s age? 2. How are the text level of creative tales in the 「Teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri system」 by themes? 3. How is the text level of creative tales in the 「Teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri system」 by genre? The subject of this study were 216 creative tale texts in the 「Teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri system」. To examine the text level of creative tales, qualitative and quantitative factors of text were analyzed. The ‘Qualitative Measures Rubric for Literature Text Complexity’(The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts: CCSS, 2010) was used for analyzing the text level of qualitative factors of creative tales. The Spache readability formula was used for analyzing the text level of quantitative factors of creative tales. For the data analysis, frequency and percentage were conducted. The findings of this study are as follows. First, regarding the text level of creative tales in the teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri System, the text levels of the majority of creative tales for three-, four-, and five-year-old children were not appropriate for their age. Especially, for each age, about 20% of the text was of a level for children that are two years older than the target age group. Meanwhile, in the analysis of the tendency in text level for three-to-five-year-old children based on four criteria that are applied to assessing the age level, i.e. text structure, theme, clarity of the language and level of conventionality, and background knowledge, different characteristics of creative tale text were found according to the age. Most of the creative tale texts for three-year-old children had an age-appropriate text structure; most of the creative tale texts for four-year-old children had an age-appropriate clarity of the language and level of conventionality, and most of the creative tale texts for five-year-old children had an age-appropriate text structure and theme. By contrast, a high proportion of the remaining criteria for the text level of creative tales were not appropriate for the target age groups. Meanwhile, regarding quantitative factors of the text level of creative tales in the 3-5 Nuri System, the text level for the three-, four-, five-year-old children varied widely, from the infant level to fourth-grade level. In particular, most text was between first-grade to third-grade level, with the majority of text for three-year-old children being the first-grade-level; and that for four- and five-year-old children being the second-grade level. In other words, the text level increased according to the target age group. Second, regarding the text level of creative tales in the teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri System according to the theme, in seven out of 11 themes, a high proportion of text of the creative tales were not appropriate for the target age. Especially, ‘My Family and I,’ ‘Our Neighborhood,’ and ‘Our Country’ included a considerably high proportion of creative tale text that is not appropriate for the age, in comparison to other themes. Regarding the trend in text of creative tales based on themes according to the four criteria for age level assessment, three themes with a wide deviation of age-appropriateness showed low levels of age-appropriateness in theme, clarity of the language and level of conventionality, and background knowledge, in comparison to other themes. In particular, the theme ‘Our Country’ had a lower proportion of age-appropriate text than ‘My Family and I’ and ‘Our Neighborhood,’ especially in terms of the background knowledge. This trend can be explained by the theme of the text. Because the theme ‘Our Country’ deals with text, theme, or subjects that are unfamiliar and difficult to preschool children, compared to other themes, it influences the level of background knowledge as well as complexity of other criteria. The following implications were proposed based on the findings in this study in order to help writers who create the creative tales and writing staff and teachers who select the tales provide age-appropriate text to preschool children: it is advisable that creative tales for preschool children be written by professional creative tale writers rather than early childhood education specialists, focusing on the text structure, theme, expression, and context, and early childhood education specialist select the tales based on the level of children according to the age. In order for early childhood education specialists to be able to select creative tales appropriate for the level of children based on understanding of text components and linguistic development of children, it is necessary to enhance the teacher educational curriculum for both preservice and in-service teachers. In addition, active research on the text level of creative tales appropriate for the age of children must be conducted to propose more objective and specific criteria for selection of creative tale However, regarding the trend in the text level of creative tales according to the themes included in the annual curriculum, the sequences of the text level of creative tales by age were not considered according to the order of themes taught throughout the semester. The text level of creative tales needs to be increased gradually from the beginning to the end of the semester, by taking into account both inter-age sequence but also intra-age sequence. This finding suggests that the text of creative tales based on daily life themes do not reflect the level of children that increases gradually throughout the school year. Third, regarding the text level of creative tales in teacher’s guidebook for the 3-5 Nuri System according to the genre, seven out of nine genres showed a higher proportion of creative tales that are not appropriate for the target age. Of the seven genres, myth, historical tale, and informational tale had an especially high proportion of text that is not appropriate for the target age. Next, regarding the trend of creative tale text by genre according to the four evaluation criteria, three genres that had a low level of age-appropriateness showed a low level of age-appropriateness in all of the criteria except text structure. Especially, the level of background knowledge was especially inappropriate for the target age in all of the three genres. This finding suggests that the subjects of the text of these genres include a considerable amount of contents included in elementary and middle school education and, therefore, are unfamiliar and abstract for preschool children. This study used the text complexity model proposed by the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS, 2010) for understanding the text level of creative tales according to the qualitative and quantitative factors and the text levels appropriate for preschool children of different ages. Especially, in terms of components of text, the study reviewed previous research on linguistic understanding ability and text during infancy to identify characteristics that are appropriate for different ages. Also, based on the theoretical review, the study analyzed the text level of creative tales in the teacher’s guidebook for 3-5 Nuri System and provided comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of creative tale text that is appropriate for preschool children of different ages.
