구조방정식 모형에서의 문항묶음

Abstract

The aim of the study is to integrate studies on item parcels in the past over 20 years and to propose appropriate methodological strategies that researchers can apply when utilizing item parcels. This dissertation first outlines the reasons why item parcels are used in light of a measurement model and a structural model. The paper then discusses controversies surrounding item parceling and, after accounting for and comparing the strategies, the paper offers appropriate suggestions. Finally, the paper proposes steps researchers can follow when using item parcels and emphasizes precautions that should be taken. Item parcels - indicators comprising the sum or mean scores of individual item scores - have been used widely in covariance models, especially structural equation models, because of their statistical advantages. The parcels are more likely to meet the assumptions as indicators than individual items are: the continuity and normality. The parcels also tend to represent the construct more, thus leading to greater communalities and higher reliability. Additionally, using parcels is more likely to yield good model fit, stable solutions, and accurate parameter estimates than using items is. However, recent literature offers arguments against using parcels in view of the evidence of drawbacks and cautions. An inappropriate usage of parcels could reduce the reliability and validity of research as a whole. In view of this, the debate continues about parceling and many methodological studies are ongoing. This paper proposes some necessary steps and prerequisites to follow for using item parcels, but these are easy to be ignored. The purpose of researcher in using parcels is the first and the most important criterion to consider. In addition, the dimensionality of the construct is an essential factor in deciding the way of parceling. Utilizing parcels in checking measurement invariance or using categorized variables are core debatable issues; therefore, the researcher needs to understand the underlying principles and make careful decisions. This paper highlights the fact that using parcels is not a technique employed to resolve any problems in a model, but is a useful method to enhance the quality of research if it is used in an appropriate manner. This paper is expected to contribute to use item parcels and enhance the quality of quantitative research including structural equation modeling.;문항묶음은 두 개 이상의 개별문항 점수를 합산하거나 평균을 내어 만든 새로운 지표를 의미하며, 구조방정식 모형에서 측정모형을 설정할 때 사용할 수 있는 통계적 기법이다(Kishton & Widaman, 1994). 구조방정식 모형의 틀에서 잠재변수, 즉 구인(construct)을 분석하는 방법이 널리 쓰이게 되면서, 모형을 어떻게 더 정확하게 설정하고 모형적합도를 높일 수 있을지에 대한 연구가 많이 이루어졌다. 이를 위한 방법 중 하나가 문항묶음을 구인의 지표로 사용하는 것이다. 본 연구는 지난 20년 간 이루어진 문항묶음과 관련한 방법론적 연구들을 통합하고, 이에 기반하여 일반 연구자들에게 문항묶음을 사용하는 적절한 절차를 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저, 개별문항 대신 문항묶음을 사용하는 이유, 즉 문항묶음이 지닌 통계적인 이점을 측정모형과 구조모형의 관점으로 나누어 설명한다. 다음으로는 문항묶음을 둘러싼 여러 논쟁들과 제안점에 관해 토론한다. 또한 실질적으로 문항묶음을 어떻게 만들 것인지를 다룬다. 마지막으로, 문항묶음을 사용하려는 연구자들이 참고할 수 있는 단계를 제안하고, 사용 시 주의점에 대해서도 논의한다. 모형을 분석하는 데 문항묶음이 지닌 통계적 특성에 관한 많은 연구가 이루어졌다. 개별문항보다 문항묶음은 측정모형에서 지표로서 정규성과 연속성을 더 잘 만족하고, 구인을 더 잘 대표할 수 있다. 또한 지표의 신뢰도와 전체적인 모형적합도까지 향상시키는 이점을 얻을 수 있다. 그러나 특정 상황 하에서 문항묶음의 사용은 오히려 연구의 타당도를 저해하는 방향으로 작용할 수 있다는 연구도 발표되었다. 측정모형을 구성할 때 지표로서 개별문항을 사용해야 할지, 문항묶음을 사용해야 할지에 대한 논쟁은 여전히 진행 중이며, 이에 관한 여러 방법론적 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 문항묶음의 사용과 관련하여 쟁점이 되는 사안들을 5가지로 선별하여 그 내용을 소개하고, 저자의 입장을 제안한다. 연구자의 연구 목적은 문항묶음 사용을 결정하기 위해 가장 먼저 고려해야 하는 사항이며 매우 중요한 기준이다. 또한 문항수준에서 구인의 차원성(일차원성 혹은 다차원성)은 그에 따라 적절한 문항묶음 형성방법이 다르기 때문에, 방법을 선택하기 위해 필수적으로 확인해야 한다. 이외에 측정동일성을 확인하거나 범주형 변수를 사용할 때의 문항묶음에 대해서는 가장 논란이 많은 부분이기에 연구자가 각 입장을 이해하고 자신의 연구에 맞도록 판단하고 결정하는 것이 중요하겠다. 본 논문은 문항묶음이 모형 상의 문제를 해결하기 위한 것이 아니며, 연구자는 자신의 연구 상황에 따라 문항묶음 사용을 결정하고 그에 맞는 방법으로 지표를 구성하고 사용해야 한다는 것을 강조한다. 문항묶음을 방법론적 주제로 다루어, 여러 쟁점을 통합하고 적절한 참고기준을 제시함으로써 적절하고 활발한 문항묶음의 사용과 더불어 구조방정식 모형을 이용한 양적 연구의 질을 높이는 데 기여할 것으로 기대한다.
