어머니의 대를 이은 간호사의 직업 가치관

Abstract

부모의 직업을 이어받은 자녀는 직업만족도와 직업지속성이 높은 것으로 알려져 있으며, 직업 가치관이 확고한 간호사는 간호의 질을 높이고 간호전문직 발전에도 기여할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 어머니의 대를 이은 간호사의 직업 가치관이 어머니의 영향력과 어떠한 관련성이 있는지 살펴보고, 이들의 개별적인 경험을 토대로 형성된 직업 가치관의 의미를 탐색하고자 시도되었다. 본 연구는 해석 현상학적 분석 방법을 적용하여 2016년 7월부터 2017년 9월까지 세대를 이어 간호직에 종사하는 모-녀 7쌍을 대상으로 면대면 심층면담을 통해 자료가 포화될 때까지 수집하였다. 자료 수집과 분석은 동시에 진행되었으며, 자료 분석은 면담 내용 필사본, 현장노트, 연구자 메모를 활용하여 Smith, Flowers와 Larkin이 제시한 6단계 절차를 따라 수행되었다. 본 연구의 자료를 분석한 결과, 6개의 본질적 주제가 도출되었다. 첫 번째 주제인 ‘큰 고민 없이 친숙한 간호사의 길을 택함’에서 간호사인 어머니를 통해 어린 시절부터 간호직을 자연스럽게 접한 자녀는 간호직을 긍정적으로 인식하고 진로를 선택할 때 주저 없이 간호직을 선택하였다. 두 번째 주제인 ‘간호직을 유지하는 데 어머니로부터 긍정적인 영향을 받음’에서는 간호사들이 어머니의 도움을 받아 자신의 경력관리를 위한 간호사로서의 미래를 구체적이고 명확하게 설계할 수 있었다. 세 번째 주제인 ‘어머니에 대해 자긍심을 가짐에도 간호직에 대한 갈등이 있음’에서 간호사들은 직접 경험한 간호계의 현실에 실망을 하고 이를 이해하지 못하는 어머니와의 의견 충돌로 잦은 갈등을 초래하였다. 네 번째 주제인 ‘간호직 자체에 애정을 가지게 됨’은 간호사들이 환자를 직접 돌보는 간호직을 좋아하였고, 환자와 보호자의 피드백을 통해 보람을 느끼면서 간호직에 대한 애정이 충만하였다. 다섯 번째 주제인 ‘간호할 때 환자로서가 아닌 사람 자체를 가장 주요한 가치로 삼음’에서 대를 이은 간호사들은 환자를 가족처럼 인격적으로 대하며 정성스레 간호하였고, 개별적인 상황을 고려하여 그들의 요구를 채워주고자 세심한 관심과 배려를 기울였다. 여섯 번째 주제인‘어머니를 이어 좋은 간호사가 되겠다고 다짐함’에서 간호사들은 대물림에 대한 주위 사람들의 편견에 부담감을 가지면서도 어머니에게 실망시키지 않는 자녀가 되기 위한 책임감을 가졌다. 이와 같이 어머니의 대를 이은 간호사는 간호사를 운명처럼 받아들이고 환자를 돌보는 간호사라는 직업에 자부심을 가졌으며, 이는 인간중심간호를 실천하는 중심적인 사고를 이룬다. 대를 이어 간호사가 되었다는 것에 부담감을 느끼면서도, 인내하고 감당해야 하는 책임감을 가지면서 이러한 균형을 유지하는 데 어머니의 영향력이 크게 미치고 있음을 알 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 어머니의 대를 이은 간호사의 직업 가치관의 의미를 제시함으로써 대를 이은 간호사에 대한 이해와 인식의 폭을 넓혔다는 데 의의가 있다.;It has been known that children who succeed parents’ career tend to have high job satisfaction and occupational continuation, and nurses with firm career values can raise nursing quality and contribute to the advancement of nursing professionalism. Thus, the present study investigated relationship between career values of nurses, who followed in their mothers’ career footsteps, and influence of their mothers, and consequently meanings of career values that have been formed based on individual experiences. The present study applied the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) method, for which data were collected through in-depth interviews until saturation from July 2016 to September 2017, targeting 7 mother-daughter pairs who were both working in the nursing profession. Data collection and analysis were simultaneously conducted, in which data were analyzed following the 6 steps proposed by Smith, Flowers and Larkin using manuscripts of interviews, field notes, and researchers’ memo. Six essential themes were derived from the data analysis. In the first theme,“choosing familiar nursing job without considering other options,” nurses who had the opportunity to see nurses since childhood through their mothers had positive impressions regarding the nursing job and chose it without hesitation. In the second theme, “positive influence of their mothers on maintaining the nursing job,” nurses were able to plan their careers as nurses more specifically and clearly through the help of their mothers. Third, in the theme “conflict about working as nurses while feeling proud of mothers,” nurses were disappointed with the reality of the nursing world, and had frequent conflicts with mothers who had no understanding of the issue. In the fourth theme, “having a great affection for their nursing job,” nurses liked the nursing job, which allows them to directly care for the patients, and became greatly affectionate about the nursing job as they felt rewarded by positive feedback from patients and protectors. In the fifth theme, “valuing humans as the most important subjects, not as just patients during nursing,” the second-generation nurses provided wholehearted care to patients by regarding them as their own family members, and paid full attention to each patient in order to satisfy their needs by considering their individual situations. In the last theme, “being determined to be a good nurse by following in the footsteps of mothers,” the nurses felt responsible for not disappointing their mothers, while feeling burdened by the prejudices of people against their succession in the job. As such, nurses who followed in the career paths of their mothers considered the nursing job as their real vocation, and were proud of being nurses, which would become the main idea for person-centered care. This study showed that mothers had a great influence on their daughters in maintaining the balance between the burden of being the second-generation nurses and the sense of responsibility to endure and withstand it. As for the significance of this study, it proposed meanings of career values for nurses who followed in the career footsteps of their mothers, widening the understanding and recognition of the second generation nurses following in the footsteps of their mothers.
