Abstract
Nowadays, along with dramatic economic growth in contemporary society, people are changing to focus on quantitative value or result much more than mankind’s quality life. Those living in this era are struggling to compare themselves with others and pursing their needs to be met restlessly in order to lead a more superior life and acknowledged life. Due to the gap between their hopes and realities in life, however, their anxiety is getting bigger and bigger gradually, and instead of making personal achievements, they end up feeling a sense of inferiority as they think they have failed in the society of limitless competition. Generally, a sense of inferiority is known as a kind of feeling that arouses negative thinking. But Alfred Adler (1970~1937) defines in his individual psychology that humans are all goal-oriented, so any of them comes to feel a sense of inferiority inevitably. He says that when a person has courage to accept that sense of inferiority and interest towards society, she can overcome it through creativity she is born with and develop one step further. In other words, he explains that humans are the beings that can grow through the instinct to overcome that sense of inferiority and mentions that mankind’s development is also the product of inferiority complex. This study deals with a creative dance work, 「Coexistence」 (2016), based on inferiority complex, the main concept of Adler’s individual psychology. Inferiority and superiority complex coexist in our mind just like two sides of a coin. This researcher aims to deliver the message that if a person accepts a feeling of inferiority as a drive to actualize oneself, she can meet her creative ego originating from it and lead an autonomous life eventually. Grounded on that idea, this researcher developed the work with three chapters. This author analyzed each of the scenes by the theme and contents, the dancer’s space use and movement, and the meaning of an objet or costume. Chapter 1 has ‘a child of inferiority complex’ as its concept. It expresses imperfect aspects of a person due to inferiority complex resulted from the fact that the ego inside fails to reach the standards of success in society or personal desire. Therefore, dancer A’s space gets restricted with top lighting and path lighting in order to amplify the degree of being obsessed about anxiety. An objet painted with complex colors is placed under the feet to symbolize inferiority complex inside human mind. The silent music reflects the anxious state of mind reacting to the world sensitively. The upper body moves heavily and slowly as a way to elevate the desolate mood. In the meantime, the dancer sticks her hands and top of her foot out boastingly, which implies she is aware of others and has desire to be acknowledged by them with her superiority. But at that time, she stars into space vainly, which means that she is still with inferiority complex which traps her down. Chapter 2 has ‘false happiness’ as its concept. Dancer A facing a superior other is bluffing in disguise boasting of her superiority to hide her inferiority. As the music becomes faster, dancer B symbolizing a superior other appears onto the stage proudly. Her confident hand gestures show she is ignoring and refusing dancer A. Next, complexly shaped shadow lighting is on all over the stage. Comparing herself with the other, dancer A swiftly shrugs her upper body to reveal her anxious mind. But once dancer B disappears, dancer A walks, turns around, or runs raising her body boastingly in front of the red cloth symbolizing superiority complex. It is intended to express she wants to show her false ego hiding her bad side. Chapter 3 has ‘Me for the Sake of Me’ as its concept. Dancer A gets to realize she has to be freed from a sense of inferiority and lead an autonomous life. She finally overcomes it and also pays attention to society as well. The quiet music and top lighting in the center of the stage stresses the anxiety that dancer A feels at the end of despair while she is beating the ground with her hand lying face down below it and shivering. Holding the objet laid there, she is walking draggingly into the back stage along the path lighting. This tells us she is listening to the voice of her inner self. The blue color of the cloth she is holding then implies her creative ego inside. In the end, she is approaching the front and slowly raising her arms. The level of the cloth and her eyes watching something far away symbolize dancer A’s view to the world is changing from focusing on individuals to society. Today, we are living in economic affluence but in severe competition. This hinders humans from being happy and falls them into the swamps of low self-esteem, reality avoidance, or inferiority complex. Here, this researcher intends to deliver a positive message through a creative dance work, 「Coexistence」, that to get over inferiority complex, one has to accept it as humans’ unavoidable feeling, look the reality in the face with positive attitudes, and has the mind of social interest and contribution for actualizing oneself creatively.
