Ralph Vaughan Williams의 연가곡 <Songs of Travel> Op. 7의 연구

Abstract

랄프 본 윌리엄스(Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958)는 20세기 전반의 대표적인 작곡가로서 바로크시대 영국음악을 발전시킨 헨리 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695) 이후 침체된 영국 음악을 부흥시킨 인물이다. 그는 작곡, 지휘, 민요수집 등 음악의 다방면에 걸쳐 활동하며 합창곡, 교향곡, 관현악곡, 성악곡, 영화음악 등 많은 작품을 남겼다. 본 윌리엄스는 영국의 민속음악에 관심을 가져 영국 각지에서 800여곡 이상의 민요를 수집하였고 영국민요협회에 가입하여 활동하였다. 이를 바탕으로 민요를 그의 음악의 원천으로 삼고 바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach, 1685-1750), 헨델(Georg Friedrich Händel, 1685-1759), 라벨(Maurice Joseph Ravel, 1875-1937), 드뷔시(Calude Achille Debussy, 1862-1918) 등에게서 받은 영향을 영국의 민속 음악과 결합하여 자신만의 고유한 방식으로 새로운 형태의 작품을 창작하였다. 이로써 정체성을 잃어버린 영국음악의 명성을 되찾고 독창적인 영국음악의 발전에 기여하였다. 본 윌리엄스는 1891년 가곡 작곡을 시작으로 그의 창작시기 동안 꾸준히 150여곡에 이르는 예술가곡들을 작곡했는데 그의 초기 가곡들은 영국음악 부흥의 선구자였던 패리(Charles Hubert Parry, 1848-1918)와 스탠포드(Charles Villiers Stanford, 1852-1924)의 영향을 보여주며 특히 패리의 영향은 그의 초기 작품인 연가곡 <The House of Life>와 <Songs of Travel>에서 나타난다. 본 윌리엄스의 <Songs of Travel>은 스티븐슨(Robert Louis Stevenson, 1850-1894)의 시‘Songs of Travel’을 사용하여 작곡되었고 총 9곡으로 이루어져있다. <Songs of Travel>에서는 전주에서 제시하는 음형들을 곡 전반에 걸쳐 등장시켜 연가곡 전체의 유기적 성격을 보여주었고 시의 운율에 따라서 다양한 음악적 표현을 사용하여 가사와 음악 간의 조화를 이루었다. 또 영국 민요의 요소들을 도입함으로써 곡 전체에 영국적인 분위기를 나타냈다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 특징을 이해하기 위하여 본 윌리엄스의 생애와 음악적 배경, 가곡작품에 대하여 살펴보고 <Songs of Travel>의 작품배경과 가사, 형식, 선율, 음계, 리듬, 화성을 중심으로 분석하였다.;Ralph Vaughan Williams(1872-1958) is a prominent composer in the twentieth century, widely known for his contribution to the development of music in England after Henry Purcell in the Baroque era. Vaughan Williams worked as composer, conductor, and folk song collector, and composed symphony, orchestral music, vocal music and movie sound track. He was interested in folk music so he collected more than 800 folk songs around many places in England and he joined England folk song association. Combining his musical foundation of folk music and the influence from Johann Sebastian Bach(1685-1750), Georg Friedrich Händel(1685-1759), Maurice Joseph Ravel(1875-1937) and Calude Achille Debussy(1862-1918) he created his own style. This new form of musical style alarmed the wake of a new era in the English music scene and has significantly contributed to the development. Vaughan Williams consistently composed over 150 pieces of art songs during his creation beginning with the composition of the song in 1891. His early song shows the influence of Charles Hubert Parry(1848-1918) and Charles Villiers Stanford(1852-1924), who were leaders of British music revival. Especially, Parry’s influence appears in <The House of Life> and <Songs of Travel>. His <Songs of Travel> was composed using poem of Robert Louis Stevenson(1850-1894) and consists of nine songs in total. In the <Songs of Travel>, the musical forms presented in an Intro appeared throughout the song to show the organic character. Depending on the rhythm of the poem, various musical expressions were harmonized between the lyrics and music. Also, by introducing parts of England folk songs, the whole song has a British mood. In this article, for understanding these characteristics, Vaughan Williams’s life, musical background and song piece were examined and analyzed <Songs of Travel>’s background, lyrics, form, melody, scale, rhythm, and harmony.
