Abstract

본 논문은 필자의 석사 과정 이수를 위한 졸업 연주 프로그램인 랜든 로날드(Landon Ronald, 1873-1938)의 『A Cycle of Life』와 드미트리 쇼스타코비치(Dmitri Shostacovich, 1905-1976)의 『Sonata for Cello and Piano in d minor, Op.40』에 대한 연구와 해석이다. 20세기 영국을 대표하는 작곡가 랜든 로날드의 연가곡 『A Cycle of life』는 해롤드 심슨(Harold Simpson)의 시에 붙여진 음악으로, 제 1곡 Prelude 로 시작하여 제 2곡 ‘Down in the Forest’, 제 3곡‘Love, I have won you’, 제 4곡 ‘The winds are calling’, 제 5곡 Drift down, drift down’으로 구성되어 있으며, Prelude를 제외한 나머지 곡에는 Spring(봄)- Summer(여름)- Fall(가을)- Winter(겨울) 이라는 부제를 가지고 있다. 이 곡의 정확한 작곡 연도는 알 수 없지만, 가사내용의 음악적 형상화가 잘 나타나 있으며, 대중에게 친밀하게 다가갈 수 있는 예술성과 낭만적 특징을 가지고 있어 20세기 영국가곡 및 랜든 로날드의 음악성을 보여준다. 피아노 반주부는 곡의 전반적인 분위기를 만들어 줄 뿐만 아니라 독주적인 성격도 가지고 있어 랜든 로날드의 피아니스트적인 면모를 엿볼 수 있다. 러시아 태생의 작곡가 드미트리 쇼스타코비치는 서양의 무조주의처럼 실험적인 작풍의 시작과, 20세기 초 격변하는 사회의 영향, 그리고 사회주의 리얼리즘의 영향 아래에 있던 작곡가였다. 하지만 자신만의 음악세계를 포기하지 않고 실내악, 협주곡, 교향곡과 같은 기악음악 뿐 아니라 오페라, 발레음악, 연극, 영화에 이르기까지 다양한 장르와 형식의 음악을 작곡하였다. 그 중 『Sonata for Cello and Piano in d mionr』는 그의 유일한 첼로 소나타로 4악장으로 구성되어 있다. 이 곡은 다양한 첼로 주법으로 연주할 수 있도록 작곡되었으며, 악장 간, 악장 안에서의 극적인 대비가 두드러지는 곡이다. 전통적인 소나타 형식을 따르고 있지만 주제 선율의 변화가 많고, 재현부를 과감하게 축소하기도 하며, 현대적 작곡기법인 혼합박자를 사용한 것이 이 곡의 특징이다.;This is the author’s Master’s thesis which examins Landon Ronald’s 『A Cycle of Life』and Dmitri Shostakovich’s『Sonata for Cello and Piano, in d minor』. Landon Ronald was a prominent British composer from the 20th century. His work 『A Cycle of Life』was composed for Horold Simpson’s poetry. It begins with the Prelude, followed by the second song:“Down in the Forest”, the third song:“Love, I have won you”,the fourth song:“The Winds are calling”, the fifth song:“Drift down, drift down”. Except for the prelude, the four songs also have subtitles called Spring, Summer, fall and Winter respectively. It is not clear when the song was composed. The composition has many unique features. The lylic give structures to the music and this artistic style makes it very approachable. These features reflect Ronald’s musical style. In addition, the piano accompaniment set the general mood of the song and it often showcases his playing skills as a soloist. The Russian-born composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, was heavily influenced by the experimental atonalism from the West, the societal factors of the 20th century, and the realism deriving from the communism. Despite being exposed to dynamic external forces, he maintained his musical genres that ranged from chamber music, concerto, symphony, instrumental music, opera, ballet music, play and theatrical music. In particular,『Sonata for Cello and Piano in d minor』was one of his only cello sonata that was distinguished from the popular music style at the time. The work consisted of four movements, and generally the work adheres to a typical structure of a sonata but it is unique in a sense that the melody is dynamic and it limits the uses of recapitulation. In addition, the piece endorsed the modern technique of peculiar timing.
