Abstract
This thesis aims to explore the black female body which has been suffered throughout American history and the possibility of resistance that is presented in the bodies of Dana Franklin and Alice Greenwood in Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred (1979). Butler uses the time travel to make Dana, a modern black woman, travel back to the antebellum South and experience slavery. Chapter 1 focuses on the study of the black female body which has been ignored by white feminist studies and male-centered African American studies and tracks the critiques on Kindred. The black feminist scholars have been attempted to recover the pained body of African American women by understanding their history of oppression and pain. For this deep understanding, the scholars underscore the necessity to focus on the experience of slavery, which is the origin of painful history of black Americans. In this context, the critics have focused on the theme of learning dismissed history and creating an alternative version of it in analyzing the time travelling experiences of Dana in Butler’s Kindred. Chapter 2 studies Alice’s black body which becomes enslaved by Rufus, a white slaveholder, and tries to find the possibility of resistance in Alice’s body. Originally a free woman, Alice is enslaved due to Rufus’s desire toward her and she experiences various aspects of violence inflicted upon her black female body. In this painful experience, Alice not only loses her freedom, but she is isolated in slave community and even cannot secure her motherhood. However, this chapter seeks to explore the possibility of resistance that Alice can have through her body by examining her acts and final suicide. Alice’s use of her own boy against the destructive power of Rufus signifies that she is not simply remained as a black woman who has surrendered to the oppression of slavery but she has resisted to this white power. Chapter 3 explores the relationship between time travel and Dana’s black female body. Through time travel, Dana becomes subjected to the slavery as her experiences of violence and oppression influences even her reality in the twentieth century. As Dana has no control over this time travel and repeatedly injured through it, the time travel in Kindred is often viewed as Middle Passage which African American ancestors had experienced. In the antebellum period, Dana realizes that the violence inflicted upon her slave ancestors is not an unrelated event as she also becomes the target of this violence. However, involving Dana’s corporeal body in time travel’s mechanism, Butler attempts to create positive aspect of her time travel. Dana later can obtain her own sense of agency by generating time travel back to the twentieth century and this controllability leads her to the possibility of resistance as she is able to confront the subjugation that has been created when time travel was not controllable.;본 논문은 흑인 여성 작가 옥타비아 버틀러의 작품 『킨드레드』(1979)에 등장하는 흑인 여성의 몸을 분석하고 미국의 역사 속에서 지속적으로 고통 받았던 흑인 여성이 지니는 몸을 이용한 저항의 가능성을 연구하고자 한다.
