Abstract
Recently local business review websites have gained popularity while the problem of fraud has become more and more severe. Luca & Zervas (2016) have conducted researches of the fraud incentives in American market. What might be the intention of the business fraud and why? We wonder if there would be other reasons for Chinese businesses to conduct fraud. We did a research based on Chinese biggest local business review website-Dazhongdianping. We collected 792,364 reviews of every registered restaurant in Dazhongdianping website in Hangzhou, and our findings include: 1. Nearly 23.11% of the reviews are filtered; 2. Compared with US business who conduct both unfavorable reviews to their competitors and favorable reviews to their own business, Chinese business only focus on the latter. This may due to the differences of business ethics between the two countries. 3. Fake reviews are shorter than real ones and are always conducted by almost “one-time” accounts; however they contain even more photos than legitimate ones. 4. Review frauds have close relationship with user’s social network. Users with large amount of followers and higher interaction scores are always more powerful than other users and they also have reasonable incentives to conduct fraud. In our research we found that these users are more likely to conduct fake reviews. 5. Review frauds have negative relationship with a user’s visiting intention, and users’ visiting intention is positively affected by their “Likes” folder. Users who keep more restaurants in its “Likes” folder significantly have higher visiting intentions compared to others, and they are also less likely to conduct fake reviews. Visiting intentions can largely affect the authenticity of reviews; 6. Finer restaurants (always with higher prices) are less likely to conduct review fraud. We expect that finer restaurants have higher established reputation; therefore, they conduct less review fraud than other restaurants.
