Chaotic Phenomena in the Malkus-Lorenz Waterwheel

Abstract

The Lorenz equations are important equations in many areas. Nowadays, big and chaotic data are produced and spent. They would exhibit an order out of chaotic behaviors. The need of understanding chaos in natural and social phenomena is growing much these days. In this work, we review recent and prominent analyses for the physical implementation of the Lorenz equations. First, we search the basic analysis of Lorenz equations and its equivalent mechanical model by Strogatz. Second, we examine some constructions of the waterwheel that are resulted in two dimensional system. Third, we review our recently published work. Our work is one of the few experiments in three dimensions that measure not only the angular velocity but also the mass distribution. ;로렌츠 방정식은 여러 분야에서 매우 중요한 방정식이다. 최근에 복잡하고 방대한 데이터들이 매우 많이 만들어지고 사용되어 진다. 많은 경우에서 혼돈현상들로부터 질서가 찾아지곤 한다. 요즘 자연과 사회 현상에서의 혼돈을 이해할 필요성이 계속 높아지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 로렌츠 방정식의 물리적 구현에 대한 최근의 중요한 분석들에 대해서 검토한다. 먼저, Strogatz의 기본적인 로렌츠 방정식과 그것의 구현인 기계적 모델을 탐색해 본다. 두 번째로는 이차원의 결과물을 얻은 물레방아를 제작하여 진행한 몇 가지 실험을 탐색한다. 세 번째로는 최근에 출판된 우리의 연구를 검토한다. 우리의 연구는 각 속도 뿐만 아니라 질량 분포를 측정하여 3차원의 결과를 얻는 몇 안 되는 실험 중 하나이다. 아주 간단한 물레방아 제작으로 실험을 진행하였지만 분기점 분석과 부합하는 의미 깊은 결과를 얻은 실험이다.
