Abstract
;This study is on how the surreal world where the contradictions of the reality and the absurd problems are resolved through the death motif appeared in the surrealistic paintings. The surrealism movement, which pursued the point of mentality where the dream and the reality, seeming contradictory, melt together, assumes that the incompatible conflictual elements do exist at the same time in the reality. The experience of the First World War that revealed the acute chaos and conflicts of the reality led the surrealism painters to set the conflictual concepts - good and evil inside humans, norms and desires, and life and death - as the starting point for their works. The death motif is a main material which generally appears in surrealism paintings. Death, the inevitable incident bringing about the end of all organisms, exerts influence as the power which dominates the mentality and the thinking of humans. The concept of death according to respective ages is the basic condition of understanding humans in the sense that it contains the ways how humans, humans and the society, and humans and the world are tied to one another. The surrealism painters, who perceived death as the essential element comprising life, used various death motifs to realize humane lives. Traditionally, the motifs symbolizing death were constantly expressed in surrealism paintings. Skeleton was painted as the partner who reveal the reality of the violence which inflicts threat to the lives of humans and share living Also, mirror became the material to display the gap between vision and awareness and reflect and express the true desire inside humans. The crucifixion altarpiece of Jesus Christ who died for the sin of mankind showed the circulation of life and death by stacking erotism on religious death. Surrealism painters took away conventional meanings from the motif symbolizing death and used death as the means to existentially learn death by bringing it into life. In surrealism paintings, the figures of death were the most directly expressed through bodies. The amputated and bleeding bodies and the eating and the being eaten bodies imply the state of death. However, the painters did not merely reveal the violence of the outside which drives humans to death through broken bodies. The bodies, which have been through the processes of breakup and recombination, expose the world of basic instinct that is not dominated by intimate unity and became the open bodies in which pleasure and pain circulate. Surrealism painters paid attention to the situations when desires and taboos confront each other amid the narrative of ancient mythology and tragedy and lead humans to death. Sphinx and Minotaure - the combination of human and animal - are the existences who possess the death motif. The painters used it to realize the dynamics of the living that comes from death to reproduction by drawing the basic and sacred power of nature from these existences. Ophelia by Hamlet discovered the conflictual relationship between the reality & the unreality and humans & the nature from the story of individual tragic death and found the world view of intimate circulation that can surpass the conflictual relationship between life and death. The surrealism painters, who aimed for the hope for humans on the top of the ruins of chaos and futility, tried to identify that the desire and the will of life are latent even in the vicious and violent forms of death. The truth which they aimed to deliver through the death motif is not the despair brought about by the violence of uncontrollable human nature but the firm will to suggest the hope for a humane living by bringing death into life. The death motif was the practical means for the painters to give back the absolute freedom of humans.
