The purpose of the study is to explore apocalyptic-eschatological hope, by investigating “salvation by Yahweh” in Isaiah 61. Until now, Isaiah 61 has been regarded purely as a message of salvation. Accordingly, Third Isaiah (56-66) has been treated as a record of the times from the early post-exilic period to the times of Haggai and Zechariah, and the theme of “restoration of Zion” in Isaiah 60-62 has been understood to target the building of the Second Temple. However, this study tries to establish that Third Isaiah was composed against the background of the period of Ezra and Nehemiah, and Isaiah 61 proclaims a message of “hope” in the middle of a conflict situation between the ruling class and the ordinary people. This study tries to reconstruct historical context in the period of Ezra-Nehemiah, focusing on this sociopolitical conflict between the rulers and the ruled. And since this socio-structural crisis could not be resolved, despite innovative efforts of Ezra and Nehemiah, the message of “hope” was transformed into apocalyptic-eschatological hope. To suggest this apocalyptic eschatological hope of Isaiah 61, this study analyzes the text of Isaiah 61 with four themes. First, “the year of the Lord’s favor” and “the day of vengeance” are proclaimed by one who is authorized by Yahweh. This day indicates, on one hand, the time of liberation for “the poor” and “the sad,” and on the other hand, the time of judgment for the oppressors. This liberation is described as the announcement of the Jubilee Year, and the situation of reversal that was made possible by practice of the jubilee is emphasized by a rhetorical expression, “instead of” (vss. 1–3). Second, the restoration of Zion is described as rebuilding of the Temple and the foreigners rushing into Zion. This description means that Jerusalem will be the center of the world, and the direct rule of Yahweh will come true. This suggests a complete reversal of all the oppressive circumstances that resulted from foreign rule. Also, it does not express the construction of the Second Temple, but symbolizes the restoration of Jerusalem as a space of eschatological expectation. Third, the new world that “salvation of Yahweh” brings will be a society where the justice and righteousness of Yahweh is realized—in other words, a world free of all structural inequities (vss. 8-9). Yahweh solidifies these promises through an everlasting covenant. Fourth, joyful praise of salvation by Yahweh is compared to the wedding ceremony of a bride and a groom, and a sprouting bud. These figurative expressions reveal hope that the reversal has already begun, and will soon be completed (vss. 10-11). By all these features of apocalyptic literature, Isaiah 61 proclaims cosmological rule of Yahweh to the oppressed, and announces the eschatological “hope” of the coming rule of Yahweh. This “hope” for eschatological reversal is deeply rooted in the economically exploitative circumstances of the lower class of people who lived in those harsh times.;본 논문의 목적은 이사야 61장에서 나타나는 ‘야웨의 구원’을 통해, 묵시문학적, 종말론적 ‘희망’을 구체화 하는 것이다.
