Abstract
Based on Baekun Shim Daeyoon's(白雲 沈大允, 1806~1872) argument on public interests(公利論), the purpose of this paper is to identify how human beings who desire can be embedded in the public world of Confucianism. The paper first examines the historical process of the concept of the public(公) and the private(私) to examine the way in which human desire is handled in Confucianism, and then discusses the characteristics and status of Shim Daeyoon's Argument on public interests within such traditions. The concept of the public(公) of Confucianism functioned as an ideal for reality to reach as changing its contents according to era. As an interpretation to combine the public(公) and the private(私) with ethical appropriateness, it operated with a stronger ethical scheme after Zhuxi(朱熹, 1130~1200) in the Song(宋) dynasty placing the heavenly principle(天理), human desire(人欲), righteousness(義) and interests(利) respectively in the domain of the public(公) and the private(私). In East Asia in the transitional period of modernism, human desire(人欲), which had previously been considered as the domain of the private(私), tended to be involved in the public dimension, which was based on the transformation of human-view due to the expansion of market economy in East Asia as a whole. Dai Zhen(戴震, 1724~1777) in the early Qing(淸) Dynasty promoted the extension of the concept of the public(公) by embedding human desire(人欲) into the heavenly principle(天理) to insist that if the heavenly principle(天理) is universal, social desire of human beings should be included in the principle. Seongho Yi Ik(星湖 李瀷, 1681~1763) in the late Joseon Dynasty interpreted the public(公) and the private(私) as a social community and social individual respectively, and understood the private(私) as desiring individuals in reality. He suggested that the practices of private individuals can be public if they go along with the world, thereby proposing the possibility of ‘the public private’(私中之公). Thus, the aspect of human desire(人欲) being encompassed in the public domain showed that the public ideal of Confucianism transformed themselves while interacting with the demands in the times. A Joseon Confucian scholar Baekun Shim Daeyoon in the 19th century, also affirmed the human desire(人欲) to pursue interests and thought that it leads to achieve the public interests(公利) of the world. He denied Li(理), based on the Unitary theory of Qi(氣). It was not only to reject the a priori principle that defines the value of the real world but also to comprehend the desire regarded as the human temperament as the inherent. Such theoretical transition allowed Baekun to declare that human nature is a desire for profit and honor.[性卽欲] Furthermore, Baekun developed argument on public interests(公利論) in the context of the times through the concept of Bok-Seon-Hwa-Eum(福善禍淫). His particular emphasis that heaven(天) brings blessings and punishments depending on humans’ subjective behaviors was a unique claim in the Confucian tradition. This was a Confucian response to the western learning(西學), in other words, the heaven-and-hell theory of Catholicism, which was regarded as a kind of relief faith for the Joseon Confucian scholarship and a highlight on realistic practice rather than devoting to speculative knowledge exploration or internal cultivation at the same time. Accordingly, Bok-Seon-Hwa-Eum(福善禍淫) demonstrated the secularization characteristic of Baekun thought. Baekun considered interests(利) as a nature in which Taiji(太極) creates all things and benefits all lives. Therefore, as long as Taiji(太極) and humans share the origin of Qi(氣), it is natural for humans to have a desire to enjoy benefits as well. However, the problem of the real world arises when pursuing the interests privately. Thus, seeking interests publically only yields actual interests. In this sense, the interests that Baekun affirms are common good, which are public interests(公利) that benefits all things. To conclude, Baekun expanded the public world on the ethical scheme of the public(公) and the private(私) by integrating the interests-seeking desire which had traditionally belonged to the private domain into the public domain. Baekun presented faithfulness(忠) and reciprocity(恕), as a way to practice the public interests. He saw that faithfulness(忠) and reciprocity(恕) suggested by Zhuxi are not sufficient to practice the public interests, because faithfulness(忠) suggested by Zhuxi can have limitations to be absorbed in one’s inner self before reaching specific communications or to assume the arbitrary universality, In this context, Baekun interpreted faithfulness(忠) as including the consideration for others like reciprocity(恕). Baekun's reinterpretation of faithfulness and reciprocity(忠恕) requires that any discipline of individuals should interact in a realistic and concrete social relationship, not in a self-converging direction. Baekun Shim Daeyoon’s idea can be evaluated as showing a somewhat optimistic solution to real conflicts, given that it returns to the traditional Confucian world view again while presenting a modern human-view like desiring humans. However, despite witnessing a rapidly changing world and humans, Baekun seems not to abandon metaphysical insights of Confucianism that things in the world don’t exist separately and that the world is made up of a series of relations. Therefore, although human beings in the real world are only in conflict with each other, they should not pursue their own desires and should desire with others, since the world is the sum of relations. To sum up, according to Baekun, human beings should look back on themselves through others not to misunderstand the outside world, and metaphysical insights can serve as meaningful insights only when exposed in specific relations with others in the world.;본 논문은 백운 심대윤(白雲 沈大允, 1806~1872)의 공리론(公利論)을 통하여 유학의 공적 세계에 욕망하는 인간이 어떻게 편입될 수 있는지 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
