제라르 프로망제(Gérard Fromanger)의 작품에 나타난 사회의식 연구

Abstract

This study aimed to look into the social consciousness in the works by Gérard Fromanger (1939 - present). He - one of the Nouvelle Figuration painters - has constantly displayed the paintings including social consciousness from the 1960s which is the time when he began his official career. Thus, this study focused on examining how his diverse social consciousness was expressed in his works based on the analysis of his overall works. For this, this study considered meaning of his works and picturesque character, confirming the circumstance of 1960’s France society and Art area. The social consciousness of Gérard Fromanger is connected with the political and social circumstances of France after the Second World War. France in the 1960s, during which artists actively took part in their career activities, saw various conflicts existing in the French society turning into revolutions and protests. After witnessing the revolutionary movements in 1968 and a changing society, he reflected the consciousness regarding the society in his works. In addition, he tried to voice his opinion to change the reality by participating in several social movements. Gérard Fromanger emphasized social views and messages through the works created by borrowing from the photos or the works from previous ages. And he showed the reality of the times in the works containing the pure picturesque order. Like him, these artists who show the reality of the society and accept the picturesque character of Modernism artists can be named New Realism tendency's artists. Nouvelle Figuration painters, the group Fromanger belonged to, used also the style of revealing the reality of the society by the figurative art that used metaphor or borrowing, unlike the realism painters of the 19th century. Gérard Fromanger expressed the message criticizing the old system in the works that contained the spirit of the 1968 Revolt. Through these works, he inspired the consciousness of the evolution to the public and displayed the works expressing the spirit of the revolt even after year 1968. Moreover, he reflected the people who have lost their individuality in the structure of the consumer society and fit themselves in the capitalistic system. Based on the figures whom he painted anonymously, he reminded the fact that the isolation in the modern society is the problem of everyone. However, Gérard Fromanger not only showed critical view to the society but also suggested the positive side of the society which each and every individual can be connected. Afterwards, he reflected the utopian society, which he had dearly wished, into his works. He aimed to discover ideal social forms in France in 1968 and China - the Maoist country - but failed. In 1980, he found a utopian social form at the ancient tomb mural during Etruria period that he had discovered in Siena, Italy. He suggested the ideal society without individual and social disputes by borrowing the ancient tomb murals in Italy. Through these works, Gérard Fromanger presented his viewpoint toward the French society and guided the viewers to have a new viewpoint to the society they are living in. He showed these messages in his works having pure picturesque order. Through this, he realized the works both emphasizing picturesque autonomy and having social messages. This study which researched the social consciousness in the works by Gérard Fromanger identified that he is the painter who was constantly interested in the French society and included the reality of the society in his works. Fromanger desired to share the society's reality with his generation. As previously examined, Gérard Fromanger is a meaningful painter in the sense that he has considered consistently how to express the reality of the society through the works realizing the pure picturesque order, and has shown diverse social consciousness in the works. ;본 논문은 제라르 프로망제(Gérard Fromanger, 1939- )의 작품에 나타난 사회의식을 알아보고자 한 연구이다. 프랑스 신구상회화(Nouvelle Figuration) 작가 중 한 명인 그는 작품 활동을 본격적으로 시작하였던 1960년대부터 당대의 사회상을 담아낸 회화를 지속적으로 선보여 왔다. 본 연구는 프로망제의 전체적인 작품 분석을 통하여 그의 사회의식이 작품에 표출된 양상을 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 작가의 작업에 영향을 미쳤던 1960년대 프랑스의 정치적 배경과 미술계의 상황을 확인하고, 프로망제의 작품에 담긴 의미와 조형성을 고찰하고자 한다. 프로망제의 사회의식은 전후 프랑스의 정치·사회적 상황과 연결되어 있다. 작가가 활발히 활동을 시작한 1960년대의 프랑스는 사회 내에 존재했던 다양한 갈등들이 혁명과 시위로 나타났던 시기였다. 그는 당시에 일어난 68혁명이나 변화해가는 시대를 목도하면서 키워나간 사회에 대한 의식을 작품 속에 다양하게 담아내었다. 또한 작가는 여러 사회 운동에 직접 참여하면서 주체적으로 현실을 변화시키는 목소리를 내고자 하였다. 프로망제는 현실의 모습이 담긴 사진이나 이전 시대의 작품을 차용하여 그가 전하고자 하는 메시지를 더욱 강조하여 나타내었고, 시대적 리얼리티를 순수한 조형적인 질서가 있는 화면 내에 보여주었다. 이처럼 1960년대에 등장한 모더니즘 회화의 조형성과 사회적 메시지를 조화롭게 한 화면에 담아낸 작품을 보여주는 작가들을 총합하여 뉴 리얼리즘 경향의 작가들이라고 명명할 수 있다. 프로망제가 속해서 활동했던 신구상회화 작가들 역시 사회적인 현실을 작품에 표현하면서도 19세기의 리얼리즘 화가들과는 다르게 은유나 차용을 이용한 구상 미술로 사회의 리얼리티를 드러내는 방식을 사용하였다. 프로망제는 68혁명의 정신을 담은 작품들에 구체제를 비판하는 메시지를 표출하였다. 이런 작품들을 통해서 그는 대중들에게 혁명의 의식을 고취시켜 주었고, 1968년 이후에도 혁명의 정신을 표현한 작품들을 선보였다. 아울러 작가는 소비사회의 구조 속에서 자신의 개성을 잃고 자본주의 시스템에 맞춰 살아가는 현대인들의 모습을 작품에 나타내었다. 익명적으로 처리한 인물들을 통해 작가는 현대 사회 속의 소외가 동시대를 살아가는 모든 사람들의 문제라는 점을 환기시켜 주었다. 그러나 프로망제는 사회를 비판적으로만 보지 않고, 그가 생각한 개개인이 소외를 넘어 연결될 수 있는 사회의 긍정적인 모습 역시 작품에 제시하였다. 이어서 프로망제는 그가 염원하던 유토피아적 사회를 작품에 등장시켰다. 그는 68혁명이 일어난 1968년의 프랑스와 좌파 지식인들이 긍정적으로 생각한 모택동의 나라인 중국에서 이상적인 사회의 모습을 찾고자 했으나 실패하였다. 이후 프로망제는 1980년 이탈리아 시에나에서 발견한 에트루리아 시기의 고분벽화를 차용하여 개인적·사회적 분쟁이 없는 이상사회를 작품 속에 제시하였다. 이러한 작품들을 통해서 작가는 프랑스 사회에 대한 자신의 입장을 표출하였고, 관람객들에게 그들이 살고 있는 사회를 새로운 시각으로 바라볼 수 있도록 해주었다. 그는 이러한 내용들을 순수한 조형적 질서가 있는 화면 내에 보여주었고, 이를 통해 사회적인 메시지를 간과하지 않으면서도 회화의 자율성을 강조한 작품을 구현하였다. 프로망제의 작품에 나타난 사회의식을 알아본 본 연구는 그가 프랑스 사회에 대해 지속적으로 관심을 갖고 사회의 리얼리티를 작품에 담아낸 화가라는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그의 이러한 태도는 사회에 대한 끊임없는 관심에서 비롯된 것으로, 작가는 자신이 살아가고 있는 현실의 모습을 동시대의 사람들과 함께 공유하고자 한 것이다. 이처럼 프로망제는 작품에 회화의 순수한 조형적 질서를 구현하면서도 현실을 증언하는 방식을 지속적으로 고찰하였고, 사회에 대한 의식을 다각적으로 표현하고자 했다는 점에서 그 미술사적인 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
