Abstract
Alexander’s Tale is a fictional account in letters of an expat male character who is doing his PhD in Seoul while suffering with dissociative identity disorder (DID). The story incorporates the themes of mental illness and fragmentation of identity to demonstrate the importance of mental health in our societies. The particular combination of the story’s form – epistolary novella – and its theme of co-consciousness in a DID individual is new to the field of literature and hopefully will open the doors for more similar works in the future. An accompanying theory paper reviews the links between fiction, mental health, and readership, and the therapeutic goal of Alexander’s Tale is underlined through the association of the novella with both bibliotherapy and reader-response theory. The theory paper also provides an array of information about dissociative identity disorder, both in a general scope and in the South Korean environment, and a discussion of writing techniques that help in the reflection of this mental illness in a fictional piece. The target audience, the millennial expat community living in South Korea, reflects both the country’s openness in globalization and the opportunity to fight the taboo and stigma associated with mental health and mental illness.;알렉산더의 이야기 (Alexander 's Tale)는 서울에서 박사학위를 소지하고 해방 정체성 장애 (DID)로 고통 받고 있는 한 국외 거주자의 편지를 소설로 그린 글이다.
