Abstract
Ernest Hemingway is known to have described two different social prescriptions for male identity. First, Philp Young and many critics thereafter argued for the author’s strong predilection for Victorian restraint of sexual desire. On the other hand, more recent critics noticed Hemingway’s endorsement of the opposite values, such as masculine strength and sexual prowess. This paper seeks to situate Hemingway’s description of white male identity in a broader historical context. It argues that the contradiction in Hemingway’s manhood reflects the change in the social perception of sexuality that arose during the capitalist expansion in the early twentieth century. Based on the careful analyses of The Sun Also Rises, this paper claims that the author’s demonstration of manhood represents the specific ways in which sexual desire and emotional attachment were historically appropriated as a source of profit under the capitalist economy. The first chapter studies the protagonist’s psychological conflict to examine two different social understandings of sexuality under capitalist economy. It seeks to show how individuals’ sexuality was regarded either as labor power for production or as a commodity for consumption and further reproduction. The second chapter analyzes Jake’s romantic relationship with Brett Ashley to investigate how the most profound human intimacy such as love becomes controlled by capital’s drive for profit. It argues that their relationship is established for profit generation and becomes destroyed when proven unproductive. The final chapter studies the authorial demand for restoring human intimacy. It examines how the characters suffering from emotional alienation establish solidarity precisely based on their shared experiences of sacrifice. It concludes that the restoration of the psychological attachment within social relations generates more sustainable economic condition.;헤밍웨이는 문학사적으로 두 가지 모순되는 남성성을 묘사한 것으로 알려져 있다.
