The Evolution and the Direction of Ugandan Choral Music from Pre-Colonial to Present

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to document the evolution and the direction of Ugandan choral music from pre-colonial time to the present. Through interviews and observation, this paper demonstrates Uganda is rooted in choral traditions, through various stages of development. Stretching from the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial times, like other aspects of the country’s culture, Uganda’s choral music was influenced by both internal and external factors. Unlike Western music, indigenous Ugandan music is a rote tradition, so there are neither composers nor exact dates of creation. It is participatory and collective music, as the whole community is responsible for its preservation and transmission. Due to colonization, indigenous choral music experienced retrogression, as its cultural elements collided with Western and Christian philosophies. As a result, Ugandans were musically trained and new genres were composed that reflected both Western and African elements. Presently in Uganda, the choral genre utilizes both the Western and indigenous genres, additionally including a fusion of the two. Ugandan indigenous choral music is very important representation of its culture, thus the significance of its preservation cannot be understated, which inspires the creation of this document.;전통적인 우간다 합창 음악은 서구 음악의 영향과 시간의 평가를 이겨내고 살아남은 독특하고 고유한 음악장르이다. 그 결과 우간다 합창 음악은 우간다 국민들에게 도입된 외세의 음악적 영향과 우간다 음악을 융합한 독특한 형태의 음악 장르를 창조해 냈다. 우간다의 전통적인 합창 음악은 구전을 통해서 보존돼 왔고 한 세대에서 다음 세대로 전해져 왔으며 우간다인들의 삶의 모든 면을 망라하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 (1) 우간다 합창음악의 발전과 연주를 포함하는 우간다 합창음악의 진화를 기록 하는 것이고 (2) 우간다 합창 음악에 대한 식민지주의 영향을 연구하고 (3) 식민지주의에 의해 초래된 변화들을 확인하며, (4) 식민지 시대의 우간다 작곡가들과 그들의 작품들을 분석하고 (5) 우간다에서 합창음악을 영위하고 있는 사람들을 연구하는 것이다. 본 연구는 우간다와 아프리카에서 전체에서 합창음악의 중요성에 주목한다. 본 연구는 개인 인터뷰와 관찰, 문헌과 사진 연구를 통해 우간다에서 합창 음악의 연주가 과거에 어떠 했는지, 또 우간다 합창 음악의 발전에 있어서 합창을 영위 하는 사람들이나 음악가들에게 어떤 도움이 되는 지 밝혀내고자 한다.
