Abstract
Introduction Due to the rapid economic growth, travel culture is gradually gaining momentum in Korea. It makes a lot of Korean can travel to Europe. However, it has still the limitation to know the real Europe. They go famous places and take a picture related to Korean blogs or communities. My purpose of this textbook is designed to enhance their understanding of culture, history, politics, and economy of Europe before traveling. It helps them to understand the real Europe and make to widen their vision of travelling and have opportunities to enhance their language skills to make a confidence. I have tried to create a textbook including authentic materials regarding the current issues in Europe. It makes them to have more interests regarding the Europe and can apply real life as well. A target audience is a group of adult learners above 15 years old. The English proficiency level of students is between intermediate and advanced based on the ACTFL proficiency standards. Method Richards (2006) stated that Task-based Language teaching (TBLT) is extended form Communicative Language Teaching(CLT) and is considered to develop both grammar and communicative competence through interactive tasks. This textbook based on Theme-Based instruction(TBI) and combine task based language teaching(TBLT) and Communicative language teaching (CLT). The principle in CLT is that language should be taught through language use (Savignon, 1983). Therefore the students will be engaged in functional communication activities and social interactions with authentic materials. The textbook consists of nine units of different countries, each unit has one country, contains the main topic with various exercises such as food, festival, goods, video clips and song, art, expressions, cultural tips, etc. CLT and TLT approach is mainly used in the class. One of the most effective way of language learning is to providing something other than language itself such as issues, ideas (Richards, J,C.& Rodgers, T, S., 2014) Furthermore, students will be able to share their own ideas to complete the task with group members such as discussions, games, group activities (Willis & Willis, 2008). In each chapter, the students can interact each other in the situational setting and has given varirty of genre writing(Hinkel, 2006) and conversation activity based on the main topic. According to Brown (2007) emphasized the importance of interactive approaches such as group collaboration, this portfolio contains a lot of cooperative activities and students are expected to learn effectively from peers. It helps their confidence for communicative competence and knowledge of Europe information. Expected outcomes One of the most important factor to learn a language is the motivation. To make it, teacher always should encourage to students with various of approaches such as providing authentic materials, good curriculum, reflection, etc. If students have an interest of Each country’s background knowledge, they can learn the more. Thus, teacher's big role is to prepare and to guide their real level of language skills. I expect that student will have an opportunity to aware of Europe lively in class, it makes them to have a strong desire to go the Europe and it helps to them to reduce the stress in real trip. Therefore, I would like to contain large contents activities with good curriculum development regarding the Topic, to enhance both of language and content competence before the Europe trip. Conclusion Following the increasing number of people to go the Europe travel in South Korea, the purpose of my textbook is to guide the students to enhance their language and content competence before the trip. To help them, the textbook and varieties of worksheet will provide the class and it should be prepared more authentic materials. It makes students to have strong background knowledge of Europe. Finally, students will improve their English skills as they learn through various approaches in class and can handle their future trip without fear and to go with confidence.
