Abstract
Reinforced concrete walls are widely used for residential buildings in Korea, playing a major role to resist against vertical and lateral loads. Although it is important to satisfy fire resistant performance of walls, studies of fire damaged concrete walls have been limitedly performed. Especially, it has been known that the normal strength concrete is relatively safe against fire, compared to the high strength concrete which shows spalling under fire. According to Korean building code, fire resistant structure must have thickness larger than 100mm. Also, the structures need to meet the performance criteria for one hour or two hours depending on the building purpose, number of floors, and height. The international building codes also suggest that the walls need to meet minimum thickness depending aggregates of the concrete. To investigate the fire resistance of the bearing walls in a structure, knowledge of the behaviors of isolated walls or sub-assembly testing in the standard furnace is required. Therefore, the experiments are performed to investigate the factors during a fire test on the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete walls. The factors are wall thickness, moisture content, axial load and heating area. Seventeen wall specimens are tested under the ISO 834 standard fire curve and loading test. The different temperature distributions of the walls vary depending on these factors. Among the variables, the wall thickness and moisture content have a significant effect on the load-bearing capacity of the fire-damaged walls. The walls with 150 ㎜ thickness is more damaged than the walls with 200 ㎜ and 250 ㎜ thicknesses because of the relatively thinner walls and moisture- content-sensitive. 2. The moisture clog inside thick walls with 200 and 250 ㎜ thicknesses prevents heat being transferred and this acts as insulation. It is becoming serious-especially in large moisture content, which have good fire resistance. But, the effect on the load-bearing capacity of the walls of the 200 ㎜ and 250 ㎜ thicknesses is not dependent heavily on the moisture content. The axial-loaded walls exert an effect on the change of the temperature distribution, but both the experiment and analytical results show that it is not enough to exert an influence on the load-bearing capacities. The proposed analytical modeling technique having moisture clog zone is able to predict thermal behavior of normal strength concrete walls under fire with consideration of moisture contents. Thermal properties for concrete and steel adapted from Eurocode 2 and the proposed thermal conductivity of moisture clog are applied to the model, the analytical results of models matches well with experimental results. In addition, a structure with two walls, two beams, two slabs and one column is tested under the ISO 834 standard fire curve to compare with the behavior of the isolated walls. The temperature distributions of two walls in a structure can be different depending on fire test condition or material properties by curing environment. However, the behavior of a wall in a structure and an isolated wall under fire condition are similar if these conditions are equal. The analytical method based on validated thought experimental results is applied to generate the fire-damaged walls with 2,800 high considering the buckling effect. The models for structural analyses generated to deformation shape after thermal analysis. The load-bearing capacity of the fire-damaged walls with pin supports at both ends does not significantly depend on the wall thickness, the reason for it is restraint of pinned ends. The difference of the load-bearing capacity of fire-damaged walls as moisture content, axial load, and eccentricity are within approximately 5 %. The load-bearing capacity of fire-damaged walls can be calculated by 500 ℃ isotherm method by Eurocode 2. 500 ℃ isotherm method is applicable to the walls with 150 ㎜ thickness although the minimum width of cross-section for 2h of fire resistance rate is 160 ㎜. However, for the wall with thickness 150 ㎜ and one-pinned end, the load-bearing capacity can be calculated by modified 500 ℃ isotherm method that concrete at a temperature more than 400 ℃ is neglected. Then, the finite element models of fire-damaged walls in a structure are developed to predict the load-bearing capacity of RC structures with the bearing wall system after fire. A typical bearing wall system structures in a fire is occurred the redistribution of the vertical load in walls. The vertical load in fire-exposed walls is moved to fire-unexposed or exposed wall in the side of a structure, it is remarkable in the larger axial load level. As a results both experiments of isolated walls and a structure with walls and analyses of isolated walls and a unit in a residential building, there is significant difference in temperature distribution of walls depending on variables. Although the load-bearing capacity of fire-exposed walls for 2 h is 55 to 73 %, the load-bearing capacity of a fire-damaged structure is 80 – 95 %. That is because the redistribution of the vertical load in walls is occurred in fire.;국내 아파트는 대부분 벽식구조로 건설되어 있으며, 주요부재인 벽체는 상부로부터 전달되는 수직력 뿐 아니라 수평력을 기초에 전달하는 역할을 하고 있다.
