어머니와 유아의 공간 언어 사용과 유아의 공간능력

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 어머니와 만 4, 5세 유아의 공간 언어 사용과 유아의 공간능력의 일반적 경향 및 연령과 상황에 따른 차이를 살펴보고, 어머니와 유아의 공간 언어 사용과 유아의 공간능력 간 관계를 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 서울시 및 수도권에 거주하는 만 4, 5세 유아와 그들의 어머니 41쌍을 대상으로 실험실 상황에서 자료를 수집하였다. 어머니와 유아가 사용하는 공간 언어는 자유놀이와 책 읽기 상황으로 구분하여 Cannon, Levine과 Huttenlocher(2007)가 개발한 '구조화 및 반구조화 상황에서 양육자와 아동의 공간 언어 분석 체계(A System for Analyzing Children and Caregivers' Language about Space in Structured and Unstructured Contexts)'를 사용하여 분석하였다. 유아의 공간능력은 국내에서 개발된 홍혜경(2001)의 '유아 공간능력의 측정도구'를 사용해 5가지 하위 영역(눈-운동 협응, 공간 추리, 형태-바탕 지각, 시각적 기억 및 회상, 공간 내 위치 지각)에서 유아의 공간능력을 측정하였다. 자료분석을 위해 SPSS 21.0 프로그램을 사용하여 기술통계, 독립표본 t검정, 상관분석을 실시하였으며, 필요한 경우 급내상관계수와 편상관계수를 산출하였다. 본 연구의 연구문제에 근거해 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어머니와 유아의 공간언어 사용과 유아 공간능력의 일반적 경향 및 연령에 따른 차이를 살펴본 결과, 어머니와 유아의 공간 언어 사용 비율은 높지 않았다. 유아의 공간능력은 하위 영역 별 수준이 상이하게 나타났는데, 그 중 '공간 내 위치 지각'영역은 천정효과로 정규성을 획득하지 못했다. 연령에 따른 차이와 관련하여 유아의 공간능력에서만 연령차가 유의하게 나타났고 만 5세 유아가 만 4세 유아 보다 공간 과제를 잘 수행하였다. 둘째, 자유놀이와 책 읽기 상황에서 어머니와 유아가 사용하는 공간 언어의 차이를 살펴본 결과, 어머니는 자유놀이 상황 보다 책 읽기 상황에서 공간 언어를 더 많이 사용하였고, 이러한 차이는 통계적으로 유의하였다. 셋째, 자유놀이와 책 읽기 상황에서 어머니와 유아가 사용하는 공간 언어 간 관계를 살펴 본 결과, 각 상황에서 어머니와 유아가 사용하는 언어는 상호 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났고, 교차 상관은 나타나지 않았다. 마지막으로, 자유놀이와 책 읽기 상황에서 어머니가 사용하는 공간 언어와 유아의 공간능력 간 상관은 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 즉, 어머니가 사용하는 공간 언어와 유아의 공간능력 수준은 관련이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 국내외에서 시도되지 않았던 어머니의 공간 언어 사용에 대해 탐색하였고, 어머니의 공간 언어 사용 비율이 높지 않다는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학 분야를 통칭하는 STEM 영역에서의 성취와 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 여겨지는 공간능력의 하위 영역을 살펴보고, 만 4, 5세 간 연령차를 확인하여 공간능력의 연령에 따른 발달을 확인할 수 있는 근거 자료를 제시하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 또한 본 연구의 결과는 유아기를 공간능력 발달의 민감기로서 재조명하고, 유아의 공간 언어 사용 및 향후 공간능력 발달에서 어머니가 해야 할 역할에 대한 방향성을 제시하고 있다는 점에서 그 학문적, 실용적 의의가 있다.;The main purposes of this study were (1) to explore the basic tendency of spatial language used by mothers and preschoolers and preschoolers' spatial ability, (2) to examine the differences in uses of spatial language between mothers and preschoolers according to free-play and book reading situation, (3) to examine the relations between mothers' and preschooler's uses of spatial language, (4) to examine the relations between maternal uses of spatial language and preschoolers' spatial ability. Forty one 4 and 5 years old preschoolers (20 4-year-old and 21 5-year-old) and their mothers were participated in a videotaped laboratory procedure that involved free-play with toys and book reading situation. Spatial language used by mothers and preschoolers was assessed in free-play and book reading and was coded for frequencies and rates. Preschoolers' spatial ability was assessed by using the spatial ability tasks including finding a maze, choosing the appropriate shape, building wood blocks. The main results of this study were as follows: First, there were significant age differences in the spatial ability of preschoolers. Five-year-old preschoolers performed better than four-year-old preschoolers. Second, mothers' uses of spatial language varied according to the situation. They used more spatial words in book reading situation than free-play situation. Third, relations between mothers' and preschoolers' uses of spatial language were significant. As the mothers used more spatial language in the free-play situation, the preschoolers used more spatial language. In conclusion, the current study uncovered that there were significant age differences in preschoolers' spatial ability and maternal uses of spatial language and preschoolers' uses of spatial language were partly correlated. In addition, this study emphasized the importance of situation where spatial language in used suggesting the need to consider diverse contexts when exploring relations between maternal uses of spatial language and preschoolers' uses of spatial language.
