인포그래픽을 활용한 안전매뉴얼 그래픽 스타일 연구

Abstract

안전 문제는 늘 있어왔지만 근래에 있었던 안전 불감증으로 인한 사고들은 사회 안전에 대한 불안감을 조장하여 전반적인 사회적 분위기를 더욱 침체시켰다. 정부의 안일한 대응 태도 속에 긴급한 상황에서 그 누구도 안전매뉴얼을 제대로 알지 못해서 벌어진 사고들과 안전지식에 대한 부재로 인해 벌어진 안타까운 사고들이 줄이어 있어왔다. 근 몇 년간 한국에서 벌어진 재난사고들을 통해 더욱 부각된 안전에 대한 문제는 시민들과 정부기관의 입장차이로 화해의 기미가 보이지 않고 오히려 사회에 대한 불신과 갈등을 부추기는 꼴이 되었다. 안전에 대한 관심은 높아졌지만 여전한 인식과 안일한 대응태도는 떠넘기기식의 책임전가로 비춰져 그 누구도 책임지려하지 않는 모양이다. 시민들은 이런 상황에서 각자의 안전을 위해 인터넷을 통해 안전에 대한 정보와 매뉴얼을 검색하여 얻고 있다. 2016년 9월에 경주에서 지진이 일어난 당시, 지진발생시 대처해야하는 안전매뉴얼을 문의하는 전화가 빗발쳤다. 트위터나 페이스북등 SNS에서는 정부기관보다 빠른 실시간 지진 상황 보고와 안전 정보가 공유되어 국민안전처의 늦장 대응에 대해 많은 비난의 목소리가 이어졌다. 본 연구는 이러한 안전문제와 맞물려 있는 안전매뉴얼에 대한 사회적 요구를 관철하여 디자인적인 접근으로 통해 해결할 수 있는 방안을 모색하고자 하는 고민에서 시작되었다. 시민들이 안전매뉴얼의 내용과 제공처에 대해 잘 알지 못하는 원인을 추론하기 위해 현재 안전매뉴얼 정보의 형태와 전달방식을 살펴보고 분석하는 과정이 필요했다. 이에 한국의 대표 안전기관인 국민안전처와 각 정부기관에서 제공하고 있는 안전매뉴얼 정보의 형태를 분석하고 정보를 시민들에게 어떻게 전달하고 있는지 접근 방식을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 현 실정에 맞지 않는 안전매뉴얼 내용들도 있었고, 그래픽 또한 17년 동안 수정 없이 같은 삽화를 그대로 사용해오고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 정보의 형태도 텍스트 위주의 정보전달 방식이 주를 이뤘고 안전 정보 특성상 딱딱한 문체와 더불어 보험사 약관 같은 느낌의 빽빽한 화면은 보는 이로 하여금 안전매뉴얼에 대한 관심과 흥미를 잃을 수밖에 없도록 하고 있었다. 이런 현황분석을 통해서 안전매뉴얼을 다시 디자인해야한다는 결론에 도달하였다. 스탠퍼드의 로버트 혼(Robert Horn) 박사의 연구 결과에 의하면 이미지와 결합한 기억은 89% 더 오래 기억에 남는다고 한다. 정보의 홍수 시대를 살고 있는 현대인의 피로도는 최근 인포그래픽에 대한 주목과 개발이 급속도로 이루어진 이유를 설명해준다. 인포그래픽은 넘치는 정보에 지친 현대인들에게 빠르고 쉽게 정보를 얻을 수 있게 하고, 많은 정보 속에서도 필요한 정보를 직관적으로 선별하여 취할 수 있도록 하는데 큰 역할을 해오고 있다. 또, 정보를 그래픽 디자인적 요소를 활용하여 전달했을 때 더 큰 정보전달의 효과가 있다는 유익뿐 아니라 흥미유발의 면에서도 텍스트 사용만으로는 얻을 수 없는 장점이 있다. 안전매뉴얼의 정보 내용은 위험한 순간 안전을 지키기 위한 행동을 유도하는 것이어서 텍스트로만으로는 정확한 정보전달이 어렵다. 정확한 행동 지침을 알려주고 유도하기 위해서는 행동을 그래픽으로 보여주어야 직관적으로 빠르게 이해할 수 있다. 인포그래픽은 그러한 점에서 안전매뉴얼을 새롭게 디자인하는데 유용하다. 인포그래픽의 유형 중 내용을 기준으로 나누었을 때 안전매뉴얼이 속할 수 있는 유형이 없어 새롭게 행동을 유도하는 매뉴얼을 다루는 ‘행동 매뉴얼 기반 인포그래픽’으로 분류하여 유형을 추가해야했다. 인포그래픽은 단순 정보 나열이 아닌 정보를 재구성하는 것에서 일반 정보와 다른 특징을 갖는다. 재구성한다는 점은 내러티브와도 일맥상통하는 부분인데 내러티브 역시 날 것의 이야기를 담화로써 재구성한다는 점에서 구성 방식이 유사하다. 본 연구는 이에 인포그래픽의 디자인적 방법과 내러티브의 내용적 구성법을 통해 딱딱하고 지루한 안전매뉴얼을 새롭게 디자인하는 그래픽 연구를 진행한다. 안전매뉴얼의 내용은 국민안전처에서 제공하는 것을 바탕으로 제작하였다. 선행연구를 통해 안전매뉴얼의 정보적 특성과 그에 맞는 컬러와 그래픽 스타일을 탐색하여 얻은 평가와 분석을 통해 최종 디자인에 적용하였다. 본 연구에서 진행한 지진 안전매뉴얼은 긴급한 상황에서 빠르게 찾아보는 것에 목적이 있는 안전매뉴얼이라기보다 안전에 대한 인식과 관심을 유발하기 위한 것에 목적을 두고 안전매뉴얼을 내러티브와 결합하여 흥미롭게 제시하는 것에 의의를 둔다. 긴급한 상황에서는 핵심적이고 명료한 인포그래픽이 필요하겠지만 일상에서 안전 정보를 익히고 관심을 갖기 위해서는 흥미로운 요소를 더해야하기 때문이다. 연구 주제 선정은 안전매뉴얼의 범위가 방대해 주제를 한정하여 선택해야했는데 9월에 경주에서 발생한 지진이 시기적으로 적절하여 최종 연구주제로 선정하게 되었다. 최종 작업은 모바일이나 웹상에서 쉽고 빠르게 공유하고 유포할 수 있는 SNS 상에 게재할 수 있는 게시물의 형식을 따라 디자인 포맷과 방식이 결정되었다. 빠르고 간편하게 정보를 소비하고 공유하는 트렌드 중 하나인 스낵컬처가 크게 자리잡은 요즘, 카드뉴스나 gif형식의 움직이는 이미지를 활용한 홍보나 뉴스 보도가 이루어지고 있는 것을 고려한 것이다. 문화적 흐름에 맞게 같은 내용의 정보라도 새롭게 디자인하고 변화를 주어 안전에 대한 인식 개선을 도모할 수 있도록 다양한 접근 방식을 고려해야할 것이다. 재난의 특성을 정의한 경찰학사전을 살펴보면 현대사회의 재난은 일상성, 타율성, 익명성, 불확실성, 안전불감증 등의 특성이 있다고 정리하고 있다. 안전도 위험도 늘 우리 곁에 있기에 일상에서도 안전에 대한 정보와 안전매뉴얼을 숙지하고 있어야한다. 위험한 상황에서 최악의 대처를 해오기만 한 것은 아니다. 재난 상황을 만났을 때 한 사람의 현명한 대처로 안전을 지킨 사례들도 많이 있다. 이런 안전매뉴얼을 제대로 알고 있는 현명한 ‘한’ 사람이 많아질수록 더욱 안전한 사회가 이루질 것이다. 재난 속에서도 후회 없는 대처를 통해 불신의 사회에서 신뢰와 믿음으로 안전한 사회가 될 수 있도록, 이 연구를 기점으로 안전매뉴얼에 대한 디자인적 접근과 연구가 활발하게 이루어져서 보다 나은 안전 사회를 만들어가기를 기대한다.;Although there have always been safety issues around us, recent incidents caused by insensitivity toward safety have fomented anxiety about social safety, further demoralizing the overall atmosphere of society. Along with the government’s irresponsible responses, there were accidents that happened because nobody knew the safety manual properly in emergency situations, as well as unfortunate accidents that happened on account of lack of safety information. The disasters and accidents that took place in Korea in recent years have further raised the issue of safety, and the difference in position between citizens and government agencies has not shown any sign of agreement, but rather the distrust and conflict in society have increased. Although interest in safety has increased, there has been no change in our awareness of safety and negligent attitude; rather we are accustomed to shifting the responsibility to others. In this situation, citizens are searching the Internet for safety information and manuals to obtain necessary information. At the time of the earthquake in Gyeongju that broke out in September 2016, there were innumerable phone calls from people to inquire about safety manuals for earthquakes. On SNS such as Twitter and Facebook, real-time earthquake situation reports and safety information were shared faster than information from government agencies, and there was huge criticism about the delayed response of The Ministry of Public Safety and Security. This study started with the intention of seeking solutions through a design approach by observing the social demands of the safety manual which is closely related to safety issues. In order to infer the causes of citizens’ inability to know the contents and providers of safety manuals, it was necessary to examine and analyze the current forms and transmission methods of the safety manual information. This study analyzed the types of safety manual information provided by government agencies including the Ministry of Public Safety and Security, the representative safety agency in Korea, and examined how information was delivered to citizens. The result shows that there are contents of safety manuals that are not relevant to the current situation, and as for graphics, it has been found that the same illustrations have been used for 17 years without modification. The form of information was mainly focused on text-oriented information delivery. Due to the nature of the safety information, the dense screen resembling the insurance contract terms along with the formal and strict style of writing was making the viewer lose interest in the safety manual. The analysis led to the conclusion that it is needed to redesign the safety manual. According to a study by Dr. Robert Horn of Stanford University, memories combined with images are remembered by people for a longer period of time by 89%. The fatigue of modern people living in the flood of information explains why infographics have been attracting attention and developing rapidly. Infographics have been playing a great role in helping people who are tired of overflowing information to get information quickly and easily, and to intuitively select necessary information even among the flood of information. In addition, when information is transmitted by utilizing graphic design elements, the effect of information becomes greater. In terms of interest, infographics have the advantages that cannot be acquired through the use of text alone. Since the information content of the safety manual is intended to induce actions to secure safety in dangerous moments, it is difficult to transmit accurate information by text alone. In order to provide correct guidelines for actions, it is necessary to show the action in terms of graphics so that intuitive and quick understanding is possible. In this regard, infographics are useful for redesigning safety manuals. When the types of infographics were divided according to the contents, there was no type to which the safety manual could belong. For this reason, we had to add the type of ‘action manual based infographics’ that deals with manuals that lead to actions. In reconstructing information rather than simply listing information, infographics have features that are different from general information. Reconstruction is an the essential aspect of a narrative, and the narrative has a similar structure in that it reconstructs the raw story into the form of a discourse. Therefore, this study carries out a graphic research to design anew the formal and boring safety manual through the method of infographic design and the composition of a narrative. The contents of the safety manual are based on what The Ministry of Public Safety and Security provides. This study examined previous studies to evaluate and analyze the information features of the safety manual and the appropriate colors and graphic styles, and applied the results to the final design. The earthquake safety manual that was designed in this study is aimed at inducing awareness and interest in safety rather than at quick access in an emergency situation. Therefore, this study focuses on proposing the earthquake safety manual in combination with the narrative so that it triggers public interest. In an emergency situation, concise and clear infographics are needed, but in order to learn and provoke interest in safety information in everyday life, some entertaining and amusing elements must be added. Regarding the selection of the research topic, the range of safety manuals was so extensive that it was necessary to select a topic by narrowing it down. Since the earthquake that occurred in Gyeongju in September this year was appropriate for the purpose of this study, it was selected as the final research topic. The format and type of the final design were determined according to the format of posts that can be posted on the SNS, which can be shared and disseminated easily and quickly on mobile devices or on the web. Snack culture, one of the trends to consume and share information quickly and easily, is becoming popular nowadays. Common types of promotions or news reports today utilize card news or moving images in gif format. The final design was influenced by this trend. A variety of approaches should be considered to help improve the awareness of safety by designing existing information and changing it in accordance with new cultural trends. The police science dictionary, which defines the nature of the disaster, summarizes that the disasters in modern society have characteristics of being daily routines, heteronomy, anonymity, uncertainty, and insensitivity to safety. Because safety and risk are always around us, we should be familiar with safety information and safety manuals in our daily life. There were many dangerous situations so far, but the actions against them were not always the worst. There are many cases in which one person’s wise response secured safety in a disaster situation. The more people who know the safety manual properly, the safer society will be possible. We hope that even if a disaster occurs, we will be able to cope with it wisely and recover trust in our society. We expect that this study will contribute to further research on safety manuals from the perspective of design so that we could live in a safer society.
