J. Brahms Violin Sonata No. 3 Op. 108 in d minor 의 연구 및 분석

Abstract

18세기 고전주의 음악은 정형화된 형식과 전통을 중요시하여 보수적인 성격을 가진다. 반대로 19세기 낭만주의 음악은 작곡가 자신의 의견과 사상을 중요하시여 다양성을 추구하는 경향을 강하다. 낭만주의 음악을 크게 두 가지 부분으로 나눈다면 절대음악과 표제음악이 대표적일 것이다. 이 중 절대음악의 대표적인 작곡가로 꼽히는 요하네스 브람스(Johannes Brahms, 1833-1897)는 낭만주의 시대를 살았지만 고전적 전통을 중시하여 고전주의 음악의 형식 속에서 낭만주의 이념을 표현하여 브람스만의 독자적인 음악어법을 구사하였다. 브람스는 실내악 작품 24개 중 3개의 바이올린 소나타는 그의 음악적 철학이 잘 나타나 있는 작품으로 꼽힌다. 특히 본 논문에서 연구하게 될 <바이올린 소나타 No. 3 Op. 108>은 브람스의 후기 작품으로 당시 눈부신 전성기였던 낭만주의 속에서 고전적인 전통이 이상적인 균형을 이루는 작품이다. 이 작품은 총 4악장으로 이루어져 있으며, 바이올린과 피아노의 역할이 서로에게 종속적인 구조가 아닌 서로의 성부를 돋보일 수 있도록 조직적으로 이루어져 있다. 특히 전체 악장의 구조는 소나타 형식-3부 형식-3부 형식-론도 소나타 형식으로 고전주의의 전통적 형식을 가지고 있다. 그러나 전통적인 소나타 형식에 있어서 일반적으로 1악장과 마지막 악장에 음악적 비중을 크게 두는 것에 비하여, 이 작품은 각 악장의 음악적 비중을 동등하게 배분하였을 뿐만 아니라 1악장의 1 주제를 곡 전체에 사용하여 순환동기로서 사용하여 전체 악장이 유기적 관계를 이루고 있다. 리듬적인 측면에서 붓점이 다수 나타나며, 당김음과 브람스 특유의 헤미올라(hemiola)가 특징적이다. 선율적인 측면에 있어서는 전 악장에 나타나는 4도 간격, 2도 간격으로 이루어진 선율이 주요한 동기로 사용되며 이를 대위법적 작법, 동기의 축소와 확대 등 다양한 발전 방법으로 음악을 진행시켜 브람스 완숙기의 작법이 절정에 달해있다.;18th century classical music emphasizes standardized forms and tradition, and takes on a conservative character. Conversely, in 19th century romantic music, the opinions and ideology of the composer take center stage, and the music has a strong propensity toward diversity. Romantic music may be categorized into the two major categories of absolute music and program music. Johannes Brahms (1833-1987), a representative composer of absolute music, whilst living in the romantic period, attached much importance to classical traditions, expressing the ideologies of romantic music within the forms of the classical period to create a new musical diction that is uniquely Brahms. Of the 24 chamber music pieces composed by Brahms, his three violin sonatas are said to be among the best embodiments of his musical philosophy. <Violin Sonata No. 3 Op. 108>, which is the object of the present study, is a late Brahms work, wherein classical traditions reach an ideal balance with the romanticism that was in its brilliant heyday at the time. The work comprises a total of four movements, and is organized in a manner that allows the voices of the violin and piano to shine, instead of having their respective roles subordinated to that of the other. Overall, the movements take on the structure of sonata form - ternary form - ternary form - rondo sonata, a traditional form of classical music. However, whereas traditional sonata forms generally place a heavy musical emphasis on the first and last movements, the present work not only distributes musical emphasis equally throughout all movements but also uses the opening theme of the first movement throughout the piece as a circulation motif to associate all movements in an organic fashion. In the rhythmical aspect, many dotted notes appear in the piece, characterized by syncopation and Brahm’s distinctive hemiolas. As for the melodical aspect, the 4-degree and 2-degree melodies that appear throughout the movements are used as the main motifs, and the music progresses using a variety of modes of progression such as contrapuntal compositional techniques and the contraction and expansion of motifs in a culmination of the compositional techniques at the height of Brahms’ musical maturation.
