올리비에 메시앙(Olivier Messiaen) ≪새의 카탈로그≫(Catalogue d'oiseaux)의 음형패턴에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 현대 음악의 주축을 이루는 주요 작곡가 중 한 명인 올리비에 메시앙(Olivier Messiaen, 1908~1992)의 생애와 음악 어법, 그리고 그의 대표적 작품 중 하나인 ≪새의 카탈로그≫(Catalogue d'oiseaux, 1956~1958)에 대하여 연구한다. 그의 음악에 있어서 자연과 동물의 소리가 작품에 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는지 알아본다. 메시앙은 작곡 초기에 클로드 드뷔시(Claude Debussy, 1862-1918), 아놀드 쇤베르크(Arnold Schönberg, 1874-1951), 이고르 스트라빈스키(Igor Stravinsky, 1882-1971)의 영향을 받아 제 2차 세계 대전 이후의 현대음악 발전에 큰 영향을 끼친 프랑스 작곡가로, 가톨릭 신앙을 지닌 대표적인 작곡가이면서 오르간 연주가이기도 하다. 그는 힌두음악으로부터 영향을 받아 독창적인 리듬을 사용하였다. 또한 새소리를 나타낸 음형의 사용은 1930년대부터 1940년대에 이르러 두드러지게 나타난다. 이는 전통적인 선율, 화성, 대위법의 조화에서 벗어나 메시앙 자신만의 선법에서 비롯된 이국적인 선율, 자연을 모방한 소리와 이미지에 따른 리듬과 음색으로 표현되었다. 본 논문에서 연구한 메시앙의 대표적인 작품 ≪새의 카탈로그≫(Catalogue d’oiseaux)는 1958년에 작곡되고, 총 7권의 13곡으로 구성되어 있다. 각 에피소드마다 펼쳐지는 자연 풍경의 묘사와, 곡의 제목에서 비롯된 '새'라는 특징적 동물을 리듬과 음으로 표현하는데, 각 곡들마다 나타나는 여러 지역, 여러 종류의 새 울음소리들을 표현한 방식에 대하여 리듬, 화성, 음색, 그리고 선율 등을 중심으로 연구한다.;This thesis examines the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th books of Olivier Messiaen's (1908-1992) ≪Catalogue d'Oiseaux≫, comprised in total of 7 books, 13 pieces. Preceiding a study on the rhythmic figures of the work, an overview of Messiaen's life and his musical style is stated. This research mainly focuses on his treatment of rhythm and meter which are the most distinctive aspects of his music. Messiaen is a French composer who was initially influenced by Claude Debussy(1862-1918), Arnold Schonberg(1874-1951) and Igor Stravinsky(1882-1971). Hindu music, bird songs and catholicism have an effect on Messiaen's unique musical language. His unique musical language is avoked by the creative compositional techniques, such as sonorous chromatic harmony, limited transpositions and non retrogradable rhythm etc. In this study, we understand that Messiaen's original usage of rhythm symbolizes, the provinces in France and various kind of bird in the work. Messiaen's creative musical language which is well presented in ≪Catalogue d'Oiseaux≫ influenced on later composers after W.W. II.
