Ecuador has experienced a radical increase in the percentage of women participating in the National Assembly, starting from a low measurement of 3.6% in 1996 to 41.6% in 2016. According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, by 2016 Ecuador is number nine out of the top ten countries in the world with the highest number of seats held by women in the national parliament. The purpose of this research is to investigate the underlying factors that have led to this phenomena and the development of the nation. Findings in Ecuador’s experience indicate that it is not only necessary to have a quota system in place, but that it should also be complemented with the interaction of other key factors. For Ecuador, the combination of the quota and push and support from other factions such as women’s movements, political parties and supportive leaders have served as a catalyst to increase the number of women in parliament. This study examines each factor to determine which has been the most and least effective, thus serving as a blueprint for other countries still struggling in the path towards women’s political empowerment.;최근 에콰도르 여성들의 정치참여 비율이 1996년 3.6%에서 2016년 41.6%로 크게 증가했다.
