Abstract
This thesis is a study on the 〈Five Shakespeare Songs, Op. 23>, a work of Roger Quilter(1877-1953) who put the poem in the drama written by William Shakespeare(1564-1616) to the music. Shakespeare showed poetic imagination great insight into human beings, and fluent English language uses. He had significant influence on art including literature. The〈Five Shakespeare Songs, Op. 23> of Quilter, which this study deals with, use four comedies by Shakespeare as its subjects: 'Cymbeline', 'As You Like It', 'Measure for Measure', and 'Twelfth Night'. These comedies contain humorous contents which can be found in Quilter's music. Roger Quilter, an English composer in the 20th century, who sublimated the English romantic characteristics into an art work. He transformed many poems which were usually written by well-known poets into art songs. He often favored English poems of Alfred Lord Tennyson(1809-1892), William Blake(1757-1827), Robert Herrick(1868-1938), as well as Shakespeare, and so on. Therefore, excellent art songs exhibiting Quilter's style were created from his own peculiar harmony and his proper selection of poems. He was a representative English composer who showed popular tendency through joyful music. Five songs- 'Fear no more the Heat O'the Sun', 'Under the Greenwood Tree', 'It was a Lover and his Lass', 'Take, O take those Lips away', and 'Hey, Ho the Wind and the Rain' art included in the〈Five Shakespeare Songs Op. 23〉 Each piece is structured by similar melodies and characterized by cyclic consistency and unity through symmetrically positioned rhymes. This thesis examined about melody, rhythm, and harmony do the work. And it also investigates how the poem can be expressed by applying the relationship between vocal melodic line and piano accompaniment.;본 논문은 윌리엄 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare, 1564-1616)의 희곡에 나오는 노래에 곡을 붙인 로저 퀼터(Roger Quilter, 1877-1953)의 가곡집 에 관한 연구이다. 시적 상상력과 뛰어난 인간에 대한 통찰력, 그리고 풍부한 언어 구사력 등을 선보인 셰익스피어는 문학을 비롯한 예술 전반에 지대한 영향력을 끼쳤다. 이 논문에서 다루는 퀼터의 는 셰익스피어의 4개의 희극 작품인 「Cymbeline (심버린)」, 「As You Like It (뜻대로 하세요)」, 「Measure for Measure (말은 말로 되는 되로)」,「Twelfth Night (십이야)」를 주제로 사용하였다. 퀼터의〈Five Shakespeare Songs, Op. 23〉의 5개의 가곡 - 'Fear no more the Heat o' the Sun (더 이상 태양의 뜨거움을 두려워 말라)', 'Under the Greenwood Tree (푸른 숲 나무 아래)', 'It was a Lover and his Lass (이는 사랑하는 사람과 그의 소녀라)', 'Take, O take those Lips away (그 입술은 가져가세요)', 'Hey, Ho, the Wind and the Rain (헤이 호 바람과 비여)' - 을 선율, 리듬, 화성을 중심으로 연구하여 시와 음악의 관계를 살펴본다.
