Abstract
To achieve a national target of greenhouse gas reduction in the building sector, heating and cooling energy savings is as a major goal, and the government has reinforced insulation regulations, which mandate a strengthened U-value. Other countries around the world are also facing similar situations. However, various thermal bridges occur in actual building envelopes. Despite strengthening a required U-value, it is often the case that the actual insulation performance does not live up to the required U-value because the U-value, which assumes one-dimensional heat transfer, cannot reflect the multidimensional heat transfer through thermal bridges. Thus, it is essential to reduce thermal bridges to reinforce the actual insulation performance of building envelopes. Meanwhile, easy-to-install metal curtain walls are increasingly used because high-rise buildings are becoming more common. A large number of thermal bridges occur in metal curtain walls because a multitude of metal materials with an extremely high thermal conductivity are installed in the walls. Although metal panel curtain walls use insulation-embedded metal panels, which cover insulation materials with metals as major exterior wall materials, and are widely adopted in buildings in general because they are easy to install and affordable, it is necessary to address a thermal bridge issue because multiple thermal bridges repeatedly occur in metal panel joints and significantly reduce the insulation performance. This study aims to evaluate of building energy savings potential for metal panel curtain wall building by considering thermal bridges according to U-value level of envelope. Varied U-value level of envelope for metal panel curtain wall were factored in based on the standard of passive house for requirement as well as currently applied domestic standard. The thermal bridge level of joint between panels was classified into two cases: One where thermal bridge generated much heat loss (existing metal panel curtain wall, existing method), and the other where thermal bridge caused a little heat loss (improved metal panel curtain wall, improved method). Based on this, four cases for evaluation were set, and dynamic energy simulation was conducted to evaluate the building energy considering the influence of thermal bridge. To assess energy performance by U-value level of envelope of building with metal panel curtain wall considering the effect of thermal bridge, the annual energy use for heating and cooling was calculated for the ten-story office building by conducting dynamic energy evaluation via DesignBuilder v4.5. The conclusion of this study on comparing and evaluating four cases is as follows. (1) Four cases were set to assess energy performance of building with metal panel curtain wall considering the effect of thermal bridge. Energy saving potential by thermal bridge of existing method against improved method was compared for case 1 vs. 2 and case 3 vs. 4 under the condition of the same U-value level of envelope. Energy saving potential of varied U-value level of envelope was compared for case 1 vs. 3 and case 2 vs. 4 under the condition of the same thermal bridge level of joint between panels. The building chosen by this study for simulation was an office building with metal panel curtain walls in Seoul, whose construction was recently completed. DesignBuilder v4.5, which uses the building energy stimulation program Energy Plus as a calculation engine, was used. The exterior walls of the building followed the composition walls and the U-value for other parts was set in a way that satisfied the current insulation regulations. To model the additional heat transfer coefficients caused by thermal bridges, a virtual layer of materials with no thermal capacity was added to the exterior walls, and additional heat transfer coefficients depending on the linear thermal transmittance and the length of a linear thermal bridge reflected in the virtual layer. (2) To assess the effect of varied thermal bridge on U-value level of envelope, Physibel BISCO v.10.0 was used to calculate linear heat transmission coefficient of each linear thermal bridge. The current regulation was applied for material property and boundary condition of indoor and outdoor. To calculate the linear thermal transmittance, the study applied thermal bridge part modeling principles suggested by ISO 10211 to cut-off planes for heat transfer simulation parts. Vertical linear thermal bridges were divided into those between a panel and a window (P–W) and those between a panel and a panel (P–P) to set cut-off planes. Horizontal linear thermal bridges were also divided in the same manner to set cut-off planes. Point thermal bridges located on cut-off planes were excluded from modeling. (3) The total heat loss between panel and panel of case 1 vs. case 2, and case 3 vs. case 4 under the same U-value level of envelope but varied thermal bridge level of joint between panels was reduced on average 29.0% and 42.2%, respectively, and the total heat loss between panel and window was reduced on average 3.7% and 4.2%, respectively. As a result, was reduced on average 87.6%, 83.9%, respectively, and was reduced on average 11.6%, 11.7%, respectively. Therefore, the results suggest that replacing the aluminum molding of joint between panels with plastic molding with low thermal conductivity leads to considerable reduction of thermal bridge. The total heat loss between panel and panel of case 1 vs. case 3, and case 2 vs. case 4 was reduced on average 23.0% and 37.6%, respectively, and total heat loss between panel and window was reduced on average 3.2% and 3.8%, respectively. However, as for case 3 and case 4, the total heat loss was reduced because the use of high efficient insulation led to the improved insulation performance of general part. But the total heat loss of normal zone was reduced relatively. Their linear thermal transmittance was rather increased on average 18.1% and 53.6%, respectively, and that of was increased on average 10.5% and 10.3%, respectively. In existing metal panel curtain wall, the ratio of total heat loss caused by thermal bridge between panels against total heat loss of exterior wall was increased from on average 27.8% under 0.26W/㎡K of U-value level of envelope to average 44.6% under 0.15W/㎡K of U-value level of envelope. Also, improved metal panel curtain wall was increased from 2.2% to 11.4%. (4) As for the heating energy use of case 1 vs. case 3, and case 2 vs. case 4 under the same thermal bridge level of joint between panels but varied U-value level of envelope, case 3 was 8.8 kWh/㎡, reduced by 2.2% against case 1, and case 4 was 6.8 kWh/㎡, reduced by 9.0% against case 2. On the other hand, when it comes to cooling energy use, case 3 was similar to case 1, and case 4 was 10.0 kWh/㎡, increased by 2.9% against case 1. As for the total energy use of heating and cooling, case 3 was 18.2 kWh/㎡, reduced by 0.9% against case 1, and case 4 was 16.7 kWh/㎡, reduced by 2.3% against case 2, suggesting that case 2 and case 4 were effective in total energy use. As for the heating energy use of case 1 vs. case 2, and case 3 vs. case 4 under the same U-value level of envelope but varied thermal bridge level of joint between panels, case 2 was 7.4 kWh/㎡, reduced by 17.2% against case 1, and case 4 was 6.8 kWh/㎡, reduced by 22.9% against case 3, suggesting that the energy saving via the reduction of heat loss in thermal bridge was quite effective. On the other hand, the cooling energy use of case 2 was 9.7 kWh/㎡, increased by 3.0% against case 1, and case 4 was 10.0 kWh/㎡ in, increased by 5.8% against case 3. This resulted because the amount of heat loss through the exterior walls decreased owing to the improved insulation performance of the exterior walls. The amount of heat through the exterior walls is internal heat gain and solar heat gain in summer. As for the total energy use for heating and cooling, case 2 was 17.1 kWh/㎡, reduced by 6.8% against case 1, and case 4 was 16.7 kWh/㎡, reduced by 8.1% against case 3. As discussed in 4.1 section, the energy saving on heating of case 3 and case 4, was somewhat increased via the reduction of thermal bridge due to the improved insulation in general part. Consequently, replacing the aluminum molding with plastic molding with low heat conductivity in thermal bridge of joint between panels contributed to the reduction of heat loss via thermal bridge part.
