탈북 학생의 과학 수업에서 드러나는 어려움 및 어려움의 요인 분석

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 탈북 학생들의 과학 수업에서 드러나는 어려움과 어려움의 요인, 그리고 어려움을 해소하고자 하는 탈북 학생들의 시도에 대해 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 탈북 학생들을 위한 대안학교에 재학 중인 15명의 학생들을 대상으로 수업과 면담을 진행하였다. 수업은 여름방학인 2016년 7월부터 8월까지 총 18차시로 진행되었으며, 모든 수업과 면담 내용은 녹화 및 녹음 후 전사되었다. 또한 학생 활동지와 교사의 수업 후 반성일지도 분석을 위한 자료로 활용 되었다. 이를 통해 얻어진 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 과학 수업에서 드러난 어려움을 바탕으로 어려움의 요인을 분석한 결과 수업의 세 가지 요소와 같이 학생 요인, 교과 과정 요인, 교사 요인으로 구분할 수 있었다. 탈북 학생들의 경험 부족과 경험 부족으로부터 오는 심리적 위축이라는 학생 요인, 방식 또는 정답만을 요구하거나 입시를 위해서만 필요한 교과 과정 요인, 탈북 학생에 대한 이해 부족 및 낮은 기대치 그리고 수업에서 교사가 가진 권위와 같은 교사 요인은 탈북 학생들이 과학 수업에서 어려움을 겪게 하고 있었다. 탈북 학생들은 과학 수업에서 겪는 어려움을 해소하기 위해 다양한 시도를 하고 있었다. 경험 부족으로 인한 어려움은 일상에서의 경험을 활용하여 해소하고자 하였으며, 협력적 학습 과정을 통해 생각할 기회를 얻고, 또래친구들과 함께 하며 어려움을 해결해 나갔다. 또한 자신의 경험 부족으로 인한 심리적 위축을 극복하기 위해 무조건 많이 접하고 무조건 외우는 방식을 사용하기도 하였다. 하지만 탈북 학생들이 극복 할 수 있는 어려움은 학생 요인에 해당하는 어려움뿐이며 교과 과정이나 교사 요인으로 인한 어려움은 해소할 수 없다. 본 연구의 결과는 탈북 학생이 과학을 학습하는데 겪는 어려움에 다양한 요인이 있다는 것을 보여줌으로써, 그들이 겪는 문제가 더 이상 탈북 학생 개인의 결핍으로 인한 것이 아님을 시사한다. 또한 탈북 학생들이 학생 요인으로 인한 어려움을 극복하기 위해 다양한 시도를 하는 모습을 보여줌으로써 탈북 학생들이 행위자성을 가진 학습자임을 보여준다. 더 나아가서 탈북 학생들을 가르치는 교사가 그들이 스스로 어려움을 극복할 수 있는 경험을 제공하고 있는지, 탈북 학생에 대해 이해하고 있는지, 교사로서 교과과정과 학생 사이의 균형을 잘 맞추고 있는지를 돌아보게 한다.;The purpose of this study is to analyze the difficulties and its factors which North Korean Defector Students face in science class in South Korea and also their attempt to overcome such obstacles. To meet the purpose, classes and interviews were conducted for 15 students in alternative school. The students attended total 18 sessions from Jul, 2016 to Aug, 2016 while every class and interview were recorded and transcribed. Also, teachers' diary was included in analysis materials. The result of this research is as follows. First of all, based on the difficulties that have been arising out of the class, there were three main factors that led to such problems: students, class curriculums and teachers. Students, who were lack of experience and confidence have made themselves hard to adapt to the new education circumstances, while the class curriculum which forces the students to stick to the model paper and make them focus only to the college entrance examination added more burden. Teachers with low understand and expectation on the students from North Korea and their domineering attitude were also the key factor to the difficulties which the students could face in the class. Meanwhile, the North Korean Defector students were trying various attempts to overcome such obstacles. To get over the fact that they were lack of experience, the kids tried to use their daily life to obtain new experiences. The students also gained opportunity to do logical thinking through cooperative learning, and got help and support from their peers to let go of their difficulties. However, they could only overcome the problem which were caused by the 'student' factor while the class curriculum and teacher factor still lies there. The conclusion of this study shows that there could be multiple reasons for the students having difficulty in learning science and it is not limited to the students themselves. Also, by showing the students making various attempts to resolve such problems, this study claims the North Korean students are actually learners with agency. Furthermore, this study lets teachers to introspect themselves whether they are actually providing the students with positive learning environment where the kids could overcome their difficulties. In addition, teachers could penetrate themselves whether they are fully understanding their students and having a good balance as an educator between the class curriculum and individual student's characteristics and personalities.
