영화 <찰리와 초콜릿 공장, 2005>의 음악분석을 통한 대니 엘프만(Danny Elfman)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

영화의 판타지 장르는 초현실적인 인물과 사건을 그리는 영화이다. 이런 영화는 우리가 사는 세상과는 다른 세계, 물리학과 생물학의 일반 법칙이 적용되지 않는 세계를 창조해낸다. 판타지 영화는 현실에서 있을 수 없는 줄거리에 가공의 사건, 등장인물 등을 혼성하여 극화한 영화의 유형으로, 우리의 상상력이 일으키는 환상을 우리 눈앞에서 만들어낸다. 이와 같은 판타지 영화정의에서 파생된 환상의 세계를 팀버튼(Tim Burton;1958∼) 감독은 자신만의 독특한 색깔로 고딕(Gothic)한 판타지 장르의 영화를 구축해내었다. 그리고 작곡가 대니 엘프만(Danny Elfman;1953∼)은 팀버튼 감독과의 협업을 통해 독창적이고 고딕(Gothic)스타일의 영화음악을 선보였다. 본 논문은 영화 <찰리와 초콜릿 공장 (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, 2005)>의 음악 분석을 통해 작곡가 대니 엘프만(Danny Elfman)의 음악 스타일을 알아보고 스토리 전개에 따라 영상과 음악과의 상관관계와 음악적 구성요소의 특징을 찾아보았다. 연구방법으로는 할리우드 영화사의 콜라보레이션과 대니 엘프만의 작품세계에 대한 선행연구를 수행하였다. 그리고 전개에 따라 전체적인 음악의 구성을 줄거리 전개에 따라 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 나누어 각 부분에 등장하는 음악을 파악하여 분석을 위한 곡을 선정하였다. 음악 분석에 있어서는 영상과 상호관계 속에서 나타난 음악의 기능과 역할을 살펴보았으며 주요인물에 따른 모티브와 테마, 주제에 사용된 음악의 기능과 특징에 대해 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 극을 이끌어가는 주인공들(웡카, 찰리)과 핵심적인 배경(초콜릿 공장 안)에 대한 테마 설정은 가족애라는 주제를 전달하기 위해 등장할 때마다 캐릭터를 나타내는 테마가 인물의 성격이나 행동의 특징을 음악적으로 감정과 상황에 따라 다양하게 변주되어 영화 전체에 통일성을 주며 영화의 분위기나 극 전체의 흐름을 가늠할 수 있게 한다. 뮤지컬 같은 요소가 중간에 삽입되어 노래와 캐릭터의 동작이 일치하며 마치 뮤지컬의 분위기를 연출했으며, 등장하는 각각의 캐릭터들의 특징에 맞는 분장과 무대, 그리고 역동적인 무용과 보컬이 나오면서 뮤지컬 영화의 느낌을 보여준다. 캐릭터의 동작과 대니 엘프만과 팀 버튼은 그들만의 고딕한 상황과 분위기의 특징을 음악적으로 묘사하기 위해 다양한 악기의 음색과 특수주법과 음색으로 나타낸 음악의 음향 효과적인 쓰임이 돋보였고 기괴하고 신비스러운 환상의 분위기 등을 합창의 인성을 사용하여 나타낸 점이 특징적이었다. 초콜릿 공장안 환상의 세계에서 등장하는 다양한 캐릭터의 특징에 따라 디즈니 동요, 재즈 빅밴드, 펑키, 팝, 록, 민속음악 등 다양한 음악의 장르도 과감히 사용하였고 또한, 재즈, 밴드의 요소를 오케스트라에 접목시켜 강하고 역동적인 사운드를 창출해내었다. 본 연구를 통해서 대니 엘프만의 음악적 특징에 관해 이해하고 고딕(Gothic)하고 신비스러운 분위기의 판타지 음악에 사용 할 다양한 방법들이 제시되어 음악의 창작 작업에 도움이 되었으면 하는 바램을 가져본다. 더 나아가 그의 음악 스타일에 대한 연구에 있어서 도움이 되는 자료가 될 것이라 사료된다.;The movie, <Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, 2005> is the animation that was developed from England's novelist, Roald Dahl's original work, <Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, 2005>. However, the reason why Tim Button made a movie was to express the humanity in family affection and each character's personality more vividly. In this sense, the role of music was quite important in this movie which displayed some elements of animation. This study would examine how Danny Elfman used the musical device to support the mystic and exotic scene and character in the movie that was made from an original Gothic genre of Tim Button, with the subject of <Study on musical characteristic of Danny Elfman through an musical examination of the movie, <Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, 2005>>. And the study examined how music emphasized the theme of family affection, and it also aimed to extract an effective music production technique that Danny Elfman pursued. The movie reflected the story which were developed mainly focusing on the characters and Wonka's chocolate factory. The theme of main character(Wonka, Charlie) and the main background(inside a chocolate factory) helps notice the movie atmosphere and the general story by giving unity during the entire film, and whenever they appear, theme and motif which represent the characters, were played in a number of different ways to describe the character’s personality and behavior, in accordance with emotion and circumstance in order to convey the message of 'family affection'. Danny Elfman and Tim Button used a sound effective music which showed a tone of various musical instruments and unique playing styles and Character's movement in order to describe their own Gothic atmosphere and characteristic, which were both seen as remarkable, and it was characteristic in that it used a chorus personality to display a mystic and exotic atmosphere. Depending on the various character's feature shown in a fantasy world of the chocolate factory, it used a variety of music genre such as Disney child's song, jazz, big band, punk, pop, rock and folk music. Furthermore, it applied the elements of jazz and band to an orchestra, creating a dynamic sound. This study is meaningful in that it examined the pieces that are made from musical storytelling and it also identified the musical characteristic of the director, Tim Button and composer, Danny Elfman who had collaborated a number of Gothic and mystic pieces. And I hope the study could be an advantageous and helpful material for the study regarding his pieces and style and to understand his unique movie-musical values.
