During the early 20th century, psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) presented the world with his theory for the first time, which officially triggered ideas of utilizing arts in healing emotional wounds. The perspective that arts can serve as healing media in the psychoanalytic area is based on and assures that arts basically help humans develop more mature lives and egos. Therapeutic aspects of creative activities, sublimating humans mentality through creative activities are original characteristics of arts; this can be traced back to wall painting in caves, incantatory activities to overcome the fear of death or making objects in ancient times. This shows that humans have expressed their anxiety and dealt with life problems through arts. Artists in the modern era also continue to satisfy their desires through arts. They disguise themselves as madmen on purpose to effectively express their desires unsatisfied in the real world, and sublimate suppressed desires that could develop into pathological conditions in a socially acceptable way to get healing effects. Korean artist SON Sang-ki (1949-1988) in the ‘80s also had psychological motivation and personal background to treat wounds through arts. His motive for artistic creation originated from scoliosis during his childhood. His life as a disabled person with an curvature of the spine and pigeon chest caused not only physical pain but also mental suffering such as the fear of death and a sense of social isolation. His attitudes expressing the fear of death and the anger of pain in his works gradually changed through repeated artistic activities, which are shown in his series of paintings such as “A Tree that Never Grows UP,” “Flowers that Never Fade” and “Artificial City.” The series of “A Tree that Never Grows UP,” which is considered as his self-portrait, symbolically shows his sense of inferiority from his physical deformity. Being started from abstract images, the series of paintings went through creative activities to become detailed and realistic image of trees. Later then, SON Sang-ki shows self-therapeutic aspects by using ‘tree,’ the symbol of criticizing reality, as his physical ego in his artworks and facing his trauma in reality that he used to avoid metaphorically by sublimating through arts. The series of “Flowers that Never Fade” painted from 1981 to 1986 shows his cognitive changes about death. Initially, flower was the symbol of immortality that denies the fear of death and circulation of life. Through repetitive artistic creation about death, however, the artist has accepted circulation of life and death and finiteness of life, dealing with death equanimously. His painful life in Seoul evoked a sense of social isolation and anger towards society in him. During the early period of creating the series of ‘Artificial City,’ his personal suffering and anxiety was described as gloomy streets in Seoul, isolated suburbs, etc. Recognizing citizens who suffered just like himself in the process of creation, he was able to escape from his own closed world where he had been immersed in personal pain, sympathize with others’ pain and communicate with the outside world. These patterns show his artistic creative activities sublimating mature defense mechanism and the self-therapeutic process of developing into a more mature human being through artistic creation. By sublimating strong emotions including suffering, a sense of isolation, the fear of death caused from physical disability into artworks, SON Sang-ki was able to get new insight on his own life. The study focusing on self-therapeutic patterns in SON Sang-ki’s artworks is expected to provide the basis for self-therapeutic potential of artistic creation by identifying healing aspects of art itself and analyzing the artist’s psychological condition reflected in his works.;20세기 초, 정신분석학자 지그문트 프로이트(Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939)가 자신의 이론을 세상에 선보임으로써, 감정적 고통을 위한 치료에 예술을 이용하려는 사고가 공식적으로 출현하였다.
