Electrocatalytic reduction of benzoylformic acid mediated by methyl viologen

Abstract

Benzoylformic acid is reduced electrocatalytically to mandelic acid in excellent yield in the presence of methyl viologen of which two-electron reduction product behaves as active reductant, and the presence of β-CD or its derivative induces enantioselectivity.
