리 크래스너(Lee Krasner)의 콜라주 회화를 응용한 패션디자인 연구

Abstract

현대 사회에서 패션은 보호의 기능을 넘어, 시대나 민족 또는 개인의 기질과 성향 나아가 미의식에 대한 인간 정신의 집합적 표출로서 그 의미가 더욱 부각되고 있다. 이러한 패션은 비언어적 커뮤니케이션의 수단으로서 현대인들은 이를 통해 자유롭게 자신의 개성을 표출 시킬 수 있게 되었다. 오늘날 고도 감성사회 속에서 예술과 패션은 지속적인 상관관계 속에 있었으며, 기능적 차원을 넘어 표현에 역점을 둔 예술로서의 패션을 구현하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 화가 리 크래스너의 1950년대 콜라주 작품의 조형성을 분석하여 현대 패션디자인에 응용하였다. 리 크래스너의 콜라주는 드로잉을 찢은 감정적 행위에서부터 시작되었다. 이러한 자기표현은 강력한 의지를 통해 새로운 표현의 세계를 열게 된다. 본 연구에서는 1950년대 제작된 콜라주 회화 6점을 선정하여 조형적으로 분석한 후, 선적 표현과 면적 이미지 구성이 지닌 표현특성을 효과적으로 나타내기 위해 현대자수 기법을 사용하였다. 본 연구는 리 크래스너의 콜라주 회화에 나타난 독특한 재질적 특성과 자유롭고 역동적인 형상을 현대자수 기법으로 접근하여 현대 패션디자인에 회화적 이미지를 접목함으로서 패션디자인의 표현영역을 확대함에 그 목적이 있다. 연구의 이론적 체계로서 각 장의 내용은 다음과 같다. Ⅰ장에서는 연구의 목적, 방법과 내용으로 서론을 제시하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 단행본, 전시회 카탈로그, 각종 문헌자료와 인터넷자료검색을 통해 리 크래스너의 이론적 배경과 콜라주 회화 양식의 조형성을 선과 면, 색채로 구분하여 분석 제시하였다. 또한 현대자수 기법에 대한 고찰로서 현대자수의 개념과 특징 및 현대자수 기법의 종류를 살펴보고 현대자수 기법이 현대 패션디자인에 응용된 사례를 조사하고, 표현기법의 종류와 이미지 특성을 기술하였다. Ⅲ장에서는 리 크래스너의 콜라주 회화의 조형적 특성을 응용해 디자인에 접목시켜 작품을 제작하고, 제작 의도 및 방법을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 리 크래스너의 콜라주 회화의 조형적 특성을 응용하여 코트4점, 원피스 드레스2점, 총 6점의 작품을 제시하였다. 리 크래스너의 조형적 특성을 표현하는데 적합한 울, 가죽, 마 소재를 활용하며, 울 소재 위에 가죽과 마를 구성하고 반복된 스티치로 그림을 그리듯 아플리케 머신스티치 하였다. 이렇게 함으로써 리 크래스너의 평면적 회화가 패션의 입체적 형태 위에 역동적 이미지로 표현되었다. 본 작품에서 스타일화 형태는 콜라주 회화의 재구성된 모티프를 부각시키기 위해 최대한 디테일을 생략하여 단순한 실루엣으로 표현된 작품들과 실루엣에 여성스러운 디테일을 접목시켜 표현하면서 그녀의 리듬감을 더욱 강조하여 표현한 작품들로 나누어 구성하였다. 작품제작을 통한 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 리 크래스너 작품을 디자인에 응용하기 위해 사용한 가죽, 린넨, 실, 합성섬유의 재질적 특성은 거칠고 남성적인 콜라주이미지를 표현하기에 적합하였다. 둘째, 이질적인 재질감과 색채를 지닌 소재들을 찢고 잘라서, 모티프 소스를 기본으로 하되 자유롭게 재배열한 결과 리 크래스너의 작품에 거친 질감 표현과 함께 율동성과 역동감을 효과적으로 표출 시킬 수 있었다. 셋째, 반복적으로 적용된 현대자수의 머신스티치 기법이 지닌 선적이미지를 중첩시킴으로써 선적 역동성과 함께 작품 표면에 풍성한 시각적 효과를 부가 시킬 수 있었다. 넷째, 작품의 기본 소재인 울의 내구성과 유연성은 반복적인 스티치기법의 표현력을 높이는데 용이함을 알 수 있었다. 다섯째, 리 크래스너의 콜라주 회화의 풍부하고 강렬한 시각적 특성은 단순한 스타일의 의상에서 그 효과가 극대화함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 리 크래스너 콜라주 회화의 조형성을 현대자수 기법으로 표현하면서 회화의 모티프와 현대자수의 결합을 통한 새로움의 창조는 무한하다는 점을 재인식하는 계기가 되었고 앞으로 회화를 통한 다양한 표현의 현대 패션디자인이 지속적으로 연구되길 기대한다.;In today's modern society, fashion has its meanings further highlighted as the collective expression of human mentality about aesthetic consciousness in addition to the dispositions and tendencies of periods, peoples, and individuals beyond the protective function. Modern people express their individualities freely through fashion as a means of non-verbal communication. Fashion is in constant correlations with art in today's highly emotional society, where fashion as art is realized with a focus on expressions beyond the functional aspects. This study analyzed the formativity of Lee Krasner's collage works from the 1950s and applied it to modern fashion designs. Her collage works began with her emotional act of tearing up her drawings. Her self-expressions opened a new world of expressions via her strong determination. After selecting and analyzing six of her collage paintings from the 1950s in the formative aspect, the investigator employed the modern embroidery techniques to effectively show the expressive characteristics of their line expressions and side image compositions. The present study set out to approach the unique material characteristics and free and dynamic forms of her collage paintings with the modern embroidery techniques and incorporate their painting images to modern fashion designs, thus expanding the expressive domain of fashion design. Forming the theoretical framework of the study, each chapter covered the followings: Chapter I of Introduction covered the objectives, methods and content of the study. Chapter II consulted books, exhibition catalogues, all sorts of literature, and Internet searches to understand the theoretical background of Lee Krasner and analyze her collage painting styles and their formativity in terms of lines, sides, and colors. It also examined the concepts and characteristics of modern embroidery, the types of modern embroidery techniques, and the cases of modern embroidery techniques being applied to modern fashion designs and introduced the types of expressive techniques and image characteristics. In Chapter III, the investigator made works by applying the formative characteristics of Krasner's collage paintings and incorporating them into design and discussed her creative intentions and methods. By applying the formative characteristics of Krasner's collage paintings, the investigator made total six works including four coats and two one-piece dresses. Wool, leather, and hemp were used as they were fit to express the formative characteristics of the artist. The investigator organized leather and hemp over wool and applied the machine applique stitches like a painting in repetitive stitches, thus expressing her planar paintings in dynamic images on the three-dimensional forms of fashion. For styling purposes, details were omitted to the maximum to highlight the reorganized motifs of her collage paintings. Feminine details were incorporated into the works expressed in simple silhouettes in some of the works, whereas her rhythmic sense was further emphasized in others. The creation of works led to the following conclusions. First, the material characteristics of leather, linen, thread, and synthetic fiber used to apply Krasner's works to design were proper to express rough and masculine collage images. Second, materials of different qualities and colors were torn up and cut with the motif sources as the basics and then freely rearranged to effectively express the rough texture, rhythmic nature, and dynamics of Krasner's works. Third, the line images of machine stitch technique of modern embroidery applied repeatedly were overlapped to create rich visual effects on the surfaces of works along with the dynamics of lines. Fourth, the durability and flexibility of wool, one of the basic materials of works, were useful for increasing the expressive power of repetitive stitch technique. Finally, the rich and intense visual characteristics of Krasner's collage paintings had their effects maximized in clothes in simple styles. The present study created an opportunity to reconfirm the infinite creation of newness by expressing the formativity of Lee Krasner's collage paintings in the modern embroidery techniques and combining the painting motifs with modern embroidery. It will be hopefully followed by ongoing researches on modern fashion designs of various expressions based on paintings.
