다문화 배경 초등학교 저학년을 대상으로 한 다독과 한국어 이해에 관한 사례연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 다문화 배경 초등학교 저학년 대상으로 다독을 위한 교수요목을 설계하고 실제 교육 현장에 적용하여 그 결과를 분석하는 데에 있다. 학령기 다문화 배경 학습자들의 부족한 문어 능력으로 인한 학습한국어 능력의 도태는 학교생활 부적응이라는 문제를 야기했다. 이들의 한국어 문어 능력을 신장시키고 읽기에 대한 거부감을 낮추기 위한 방법으로 다독 활동을 활용한 교육이 수행될 필요가 있다고 보았다. 이에 다독이 다문화 배경 초등학교 학습자에게 한국어 읽기 능력과 태도에 어떠한 변화가 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 밝히고자 다음의 연구 문제를 제시하였다. 연구 문제 1. 다독은 다문화 배경 학습자들의 한국어 기초 읽기 능력 향상에 긍정적인 효과를 가져오는가? 연구 문제 2. 다독은 다문화 배경 학습자들의 한국어 읽기의 속도와 내용 이해 향상에 도움이 될 것인가? 연구 문제 3. 다독은 다문화 배경 학습자들의 읽기 태도에 긍정적인 변화를 보일 것인가? 본 연구를 위하여 다문화 배경 초등학교 2학년과 3학년 학습자를 연구 대상으로 12주간 다독을 통한 읽기 활동을 시행하였다. 연구의 목적 달성을 위하여 먼저 초등학교 국어 교과서와 통합 교과서를 대상으로 주제를 선정하였다. 이를 바탕으로 이해 가능하고 재미있는 그림 동화책을 다독을 위한 교육 자료로 구성하여 학습자들이 쉽게 다독에 접근할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 다독을 통한 읽기 활동으로 학습자들의 내용 이해를 도와 이들의 한국어 읽기 능력의 향상에 영향을 주었다. 사전·사후 검사와 면담, 다양한 방법으로 수집한 학습 결과물들은 다독의 효과를 제시하는 자료로 사용되었다. 본 연구에서 설정한 연구 문제에 대한 분석 결과를 요약은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학습자들의 한국어 습득과 인식 및 독해력의 향상은 사전과 사후 검사의 비교를 통해 밝혀졌다. 학습자들의 한국어 기초 읽기 능력은 평균에서 우수 수준으로 상승되었으며 독해력과 어휘력이 향상된 것을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 다독 활동은 학습자들의 한국어 읽기 속도와 내용 이해 측면에서 긍정적인 변화를 보여주었다. 12주 과정 동안 학습자들은 많은 양의 도서를 읽었으며, 다독 프로그램이 진행되어감에 따라 집중력, 독해력과 어휘력의 상승은 학습자들의 한국어 읽기 속도와 내용 이해의 향상에 영향을 주었다고 결론을 내릴 수 있었다. 셋째, 학습자들과 학부모의 면담을 분석한 결과, 다독을 통해 읽기에 대한 자신감의 상승으로 학습자의 읽기 태도에 긍정적인 변화를 보여주었으며, 이는 다독이 학습자의 읽기 태도에 영향을 미쳤음을 확인할 수 있었다. 사전 면담에서 나타났던 내용 이해에 대한 어려움과 읽기에 대한 두려움은 12주간의 다독 활동을 통하여 사라진 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 학습자들은 교사의 별다른 요구가 없어도 자발적으로 책을 읽고 다독일지를 작성하는 모습을 보이는 등의 긍정적인 변화를 보여주었다. 이상의 연구의 결과, 본 연구가 갖는 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 평균 수준의 한국어 능력을 가진 학령기 다문화 배경 학습자를 대상으로 다독에 대한 효과를 검증한 것에 있다. 둘째, 다독의 효과를 다문화 배경 학습자를 대상으로 한국어 교육에 적용하여 제시하여 그 결과를 밝혀 보여주었다는 것에 있다. 셋째, 다독 프로그램의 결과 다문화 배경 학습자들이 자발적인 읽기 태도를 보여주었다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.;The purpose of this study is to design and apply syllabuses of extensive reading for the multicultural students who are in elementary schools in the actual class, and to analyze its results. It has caused the problems of maladjustment in school to the school-age students with multicultural backgrounds that being behind the academic Korean skills due to the lack of written language skills in Korean. In order to enhance the written language skills and reduce the resistance of reading in learners, extensive reading activities need to be utilized along with training. In this extensive reading, it examines whether there is any change in reading ability and attitude to the learners with multicultural backgrounds. The following points present the research issues for proving these problems. Research issue 1: Will reading activities through extensive reading bring a positive effect on the basic reading skills in Korean to learners with multicultural backgrounds? Research issue 2: Will reading activities through extensive reading be helpful to enhance the speed and understanding of the content of reading in Korean to learners with multicultural backgrounds? Research issue 3: Will extensive reading show a positive change in reading attitude for multicultural students? This study was performed 12 weeks through extensive reading and reading activities to second grade and third grade students with multicultural backgrounds. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, we first selected topics aimed at elementary language textbooks and integrated textbooks. Based on this, it makes up the educational materials which were understandable and interesting storybooks for extensive reading. Therefore, learners could easily access extensive reading. In addition, there was an improvement of the learners' Korean reading skills though helping their understanding of the content through extensive reading and reading activities. Pretests, posttests, interviews, and learning outcomes were collected in a variety of ways to present the effects of extensive reading. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the learners' improvement of Korean language acquisition, awareness, and comprehension was proven through the comparison of the pretest and posttest. The basic Korean language reading skills of the learners' level were raised from average to superior and improved reading comprehension and vocabulary. Second, extensive reading activities showed a positive change in terms of the learners' reading speed and understanding of content in Korean. Learners have read the large amounts of books during 12 weeks, and it can be concluded that the extensive reading gave an influence to reading speed and understanding of the learners' Korean language abilities though the rise of concentration, reading comprehension, and vocabulary as the extensive reading had progressed. Third, there was a positive change in the attitude of reading due to rising confidence in reading through extensive reading, which could determine the affect the reading attitude of the learners by analyzing the interview of students and parents’ data. Fear of difficulties in understanding the contents and reading that appeared in the interview before the study had gone through extensive reading activities for 12 weeks. Learners also showed positive changes, such as reading a book voluntarily and writing a reading diary without the teacher's request. The significance of this study is as follows: First, it has verified the effects of extensive reading aimed at school-age students with a multicultural background who has average Korean language skills. Second, it showed the effects of extensive reading by applying it to the Korean language education for the learners with multicultural backgrounds and proved its results. Third, it is significant in that the learners with multicultural backgrounds showed the voluntary reading attitude after the extensive reading program.
